Me, dickhead, lost the remote key for the van last month. Don't quite know how as I got to the van, opened it, chucked my stuff on the step, climbed in, grabbed a beer and sat outside.

When I wanted to lock the van two days later I couldn't find the key. Not in my hip pack, not on the floor nor to be found outside. Cleared the van out completely, but to no avail.

Still got the "dumb" analogue key.

The van is too new for the software at the key cutters so a new key can't be coded.

So it's a trip to the Fiat garage, a two week wait and 520€.....gulp!

When I bought my new (to me) car 4 years ago it only had one key. The dealer basically said "tough", but I showed them the photo from the advert on their own website that showed both keys.

£280, at their expense!

Grrr.

OK... Was thinking about waiting till we're in Italy to order it, but guessing they're won't be much price difference if you're paying £450 in the UK.

Just going to have to suck it up. That's over half a months budget on a key.

Not a bad idea, but a long rope might be easier.

@Harry_the_Spider Been there myself too.

During initial enquiries -

Me: "does this have two keys?"

Them: "Oh yes, two keys, good job as they are very expensive"

At time of collection...

"wheres the other key?"

"Ah, oh, erm, right, not sure, guess we will have to buy you a new one from the manufacturer..."

"Yes I suppose you will, good job, as they are very expensive"

I had this recently with a dumb-key gor my 20 year old transit connect, £80!

I informed the nice man that separate key insurance is £15 and I'll take my chances with that.

I would be trying another key place as the one we used has coded very new vehicles.

Lucky it's not a Mercedes, that involves a Mercedes Dealer, paperwork and £$£$..

Lucky it isn't a Truck they get silly expensive if you loose them.

Yup mate of mine crushed one in the first week of a new job, was about 500 quid. Seems as though car manufactures are trying to match it!

You used to be able to buy key blanks, the relevant transponder and then get it programmed for much less money. But I think this has been gradually made more difficult because it's a nice little earner for the dealer networks.

It seems with older cars a key can be copied assuming you still have the spare.

The code readers can't read newer keys. The guy we dealt with blamed the Chinese for not being quick enough with the code cracking.

Working on a repair/refurbishment site with anywhere up to 3300 vehicles on site, making sure keys were looked after was made very clear to everyone. Spares were tagged and filed away, especially the school of motoring cars - they were all brand new, and always went out with one key. Amazingly, Motability cars often came in with just one key, and new ones had to be purchased. I hate to think what it must cost them in replacements!

My car’s spare is hung on a hook in the hall, where it can’t be fished for, and both have AirTags on in waterproof cases. #nottakingchances

How long ago...have you put the bins out, I lost a key years ago and then lost one recently, retraced my steps and realised I'd thrown it in the bin when I threw some rubbish I had in my hand as I walked in the door.

Our car came with 3 keys, apparently the original owner ordered an extra one 🤔

I did this with the last new car I bought too, supplied for free too, although as it was a BMW 435d probably a decent 'margin' in it.

It was the case a couple of years ago when you bought a new skoda you got a 3rd key for £20 (not a dumb one either), it would be stupid not to take that deal (lose one and you still have a spare)

It's in that jacket / those trousers that you've forgotten you were wearing at the time.

Buy it and then you will have a spare as you can guarantee the old one will turn up as soon as you pay for a new one.

My ex once took my key to move my car, as the key was on the wall next to the car while i cleaned it. I didn't see that key for another 72 hours.

While i was looking for it, i asked the ex where her key for the car was "in the key draw, where i left it".

Nope

Spent the next 3 days looking for both keys.

Found mine in the pocket of a pair of jeans that she hadn't even been wearing and her key in the pocket of a jacket that she hadn't worn since the previous winter, possibly a year ago.

Each key was £550.

On the odd occasion we swap cars now she'll still ask if i've seen her car keys. Not long after i've given her the key back.

She's the same with house keys, which is why she doesn't have keys to my place anymore.

My new van will have 3x sets of keys, but the original owners lost the remote for the Eberspacher parking heater and never replaced it as they never used the remote. I think it'll be about £200 for a replacement.

Had a spare for my old C8, brand new, dealer tagged and fitted the lock. Wasn't programmed to the transponder though so would just result in the alarm getting set off. Could potentially be programmed in Lexia or at a dealers for ££. Meh.

Probably almost guaranteed to find it just after ordering a new one, but a new key means re-coding the van and as such the old key will no longer work. The dealer was very keen on telling us this.

Spent today on a car park emptying the van completely, but no luck. Tomorrow I'll go to the dealers and order a new one. Annoyingly it could take up to two weeks for the key to arrive and I really don't want to be hanging around Munich for that long.... Been here for ten days already and I'm already at my limit. Remember why I was so desperate to leave.

Lo and behold.....! Many of you were correct.

Look what the GF found this morning in one of her many pairs of sorts.....

And when did we just sign a contract to get a new key cut and coded? Just four days ago.

The annoying bit is that I had convinced myself that I lost it and told everyone as much....

Where is the best place to hit her without the bruising being too obvious?

That's inside voice only stuff and in very poor taste, not funny.

Haha. Maybe you're right, or maybe you're overreacting.

Anyhow, I'm thinking ribs.
