Looking at buying a new TV. Ideally around 60 inches and £500.
Clearly there are loads but have so far found these 3 options: LG60UM7100PLB, Samsung UE58RU7100KXXU and Philips 58PUS6504.
Any advice on the above? I'd consider dropping down to 55 inches and spending up to £600 if worth doing for a noticeably better option.
Cheers.
LG or Samsung is your best option but I’d drop to 55” and look for deals.
I've just got an LG nanocell, it's all very nice except for such a half decent TV (£500-£600) boasting quad core processor etc the freeview menu is just a tad too laggy for my liking. Unfortunately you can't test stuff like that in the shop, because they generally don't have a TV licence to show live TV.
I have the Phillips 7303 in 50 inch, saw the updated version the 7404 in 55" for £500 recently but price has gone back up now. They seem to go on sale regularly though and there's the whole black Friday thing.
I'm very happy with it. Picture quality is excellent after some tweaking - the factory settings are bad. Ambilight is great too. Runs on Android TV so can install steam link and Kodi, YouTube, red bull TV.
Downsides: no HDR support in Amazon prime app. No iPlayer, 4od etc (might be available in the newer version). Image quality for gaming isn't as good as TV. Can pick between game mode which applies some unwanted processing you can't turn off, or monitor mode which doesn't but won't let me turn the brightness & contrast up high enough.
I've gone with LG for my last few around the house. Don't worry about extra bells and whistles - my experience of the smart features is that they are often not as good as separate devices (Amazon fire stick etc), although there is the convenience of a single remote control.
there is the convenience of a single remote control.
You should get that with most HDMI devices these days.
I think the smart features have got better over the last few years. We've got a Samsung and LG, and both have apps that work fine. I've stopped using Amazon firesticks in both because the built in apps are very useable.
Edit, This is just Prime, iplayer, and the other catch up apps, and a bit of Netflix. and youtube.
I could never recommend Samsung after getting horrible light bleed on two sets (not low end models) that were taken back immediately. A friend had the same. I replaced with an LG and it's been perfect. More choice from App Store on Samsung than LG although that's the only downside I can see.
Can’t fault my Samsung. Apps are superb (just remembered - can fault the stuff they promote on your home screen, but its easy enough to block!) and the picture is superb. Was watching the Attenborough thing yesterday in HD and can’t fathom why Ultra HD is needed, the detail was incredible.
That’s a good point with the LG guide and apps it’s noticeably more sluggish than the Samsung interface.
DezB it’s absolutely incredible in 4K
