My Hoodie collection has taken a battering during the look downs. I have an extensive selection ranging from best lightweight and heavyweight, through to general house wear, bike maintenance and diy and of varying grades of filth and some heavyweights for sitting round outside in the cool evenings.

Thing is even the best are looking a bit tired for public consumption and so I am thinking about introducing some new bests to the range and retiring some of the grot to the rag bag. I love the versatility of the hoodie, unzip to cool off, hood up to warm up, useful pockets, keeps the wind off. Perfect for external socialising.

Trouble is I am approaching 50 so I am no longer confident of going into the new big wide world of socialising in a Hoodie. Should I not care and let the world loose on the Hoodie crocs / leather shoes combo or is there something else I should be considering? No cardigan suggestions please.

thanks

I think the hipster elements of the Superdry dads demographic have moved into chore jackets and pullover smocks.

North Face hoodie, trakkies and crocs is acceptable for late 40's isn't it?

Absolutely fine, so long as you are able to suspend any sense of self-respect.

You know Crocs are pretty much well on trend right now?

No need all dignity and self-respect drains out of the holes in the Crocs!

Only thing worse than crocs is ........

Fake crocs*

* Said while wearing ones crocs...... The versatility of crocs is not to be underestimated however anyone wearing them outside of the gates to their property ie to the shops should give them selves a shake.

As for hoodies. Not had one in years . The hood seemed kinda pointless. Moved onto casual shirts of varying degrees of thickness and material.

My wife just got a pair and is trying to convince me they're good for beach wear (before going in the sea, so paired with a wetsuit). I'm not so sure.

My Crocs melted, left them in the sun in Turkey and they shrank and distorted. 🙁

to the shops should give them selves a shake

Or slippers in the supermarket as I saw yesterday.

Lethal- see also round a wet pool.

Wet stone or wet concrete in crocs is insanity.

Decathlon water shoes paired with wetsuit is a winning combo plus side is you don't even have to take them off to swim

Crocs never have been, or even will be “on trend”.

Surely one of the joys of getting older is being able to afford really nice shoes?

Surely one of the joys of getting older is not giving a shit what anyone else thinks about you?

Clothing / fashion insecurity is a young person's problem.

Alife, Nicole McLaughlin, Balenciaga and even Adidas have all done collabs with Crocs not too long ago which pretty much puts them on trend. Maybe not in your opinion but wider fashion world they are.

I don't own any. You claimed "Crocs never have been, or even will be “on trend”" and i just pointed out a few high fashion brands and designers that mean thats not really true. end of discussion really.

Thanks to all who have tried to addressed my dielema and I am sorry for my stupid throw away Crocs comment it appears to have derailed the more helpful comments.

My reaching out for STW fashion advice is precisely because I don't give a shite or have a clue but even by my low standards I am looking pretty threadbare and I think Crocs are acceptable in public!

Thanks again I'm off to research casual overshirts, chore jackets, pullover smocks and blankets

best thing about hoddies and old age... is if you unzip them when eating then they stay food free.

"Surely one of the joys of getting older is being able to afford really nice shoes?"

Is it? I prefer just wearing what is comfortable and practical. Where would I wear "nice shoes"?

I WFH and only really go out to go paddling or pedalling. Sometimes I go to B+Q and maybe the swimming pool when it opens.

In answer to the original question. Just wear a hoodie, Alpkit?

Like you, I love hoodies but I haven’t been a Sk8er Boi since AvLav was singing about it on the radio.

Anyway, I’ve decided that the slightly more ‘technical’ hoodie is fine for the mature gentleman. I’ve got a few - Rab, Alpkit and (my favourite) Haglöfs. I’m sure some people would roll their eyes at technical wear around the house but it fits in well around here. YM(and friendship circles)MV.

65 years old here and as has been mentioned who gives a flying @@@@ what I wear? Its not like I'm trying to impress anybody 🙄 Currently wearing a Fox hoodie but recently bought a Broken Riders one, impressed with the quality it's replacing my faithful Bike Co Whistler one that's now over 10 years old, still good for mooching about the house and garden just a bit tatty for being out and about. As for Crocs? 😱😱😱 I've worn skate shoes forever and if that's a problem for anybody do I care? 🤔

As a 50 year old bloke, absolutely nobody cares what you wear.

Short of going out in a tutu, you are to all intents and purposes invisible

I have a large selection of hoodies. Well... technically I own them, but if I want to actually wear them I have to go and retrieve one from whichever one of my teenage daughters has nicked the latest one

As Mr Smith isn't here I'll answer for him, you want a pale blue Pringle argyle sweater over a cream polo neck. Tasseled slip one and action slacks to complete the look. You'll also be needing a shitty stick.

Seriously? 🤣
Listen son, I’ve just ordered the one below, and the one below that is the one I can be seen wearing most of the time. I’m very nearly 67, and I’m coming up short on the number of ****s I couldn’t give about what other people think about what I wear!

over the head hoodies are my go to style of top.

The Kangaroo pocket make them indispensable ( imho )

And at 62 I don’t care what the yoof think about my style ( or lack of ) and haven’t for years 🤣

What is meaning of word “collabs” and who are theses peeps you speak of, well other than Mr Addidas who makes a nice range of daps. 🙂

Old people and fashion that’s an oxymoron, I still wonder where they get the nylon beige trousers that are an inch too short.

Ah hoodies , find it a bit odd when people wander around with the hoods up on nice days but very practical especially if they’ve got zip fronts and your outside in the cold.

Now sliders and socks 🙂

I do like the ‘SN’ Supernatural hoodies as they are made out of a mix of merino and stuff so they don’t wear out to rapidly and tend to not get stinky if your yomping around the place.

This is true, but it's the kind of fashion for people who see TOWIE as aspirational and love going to Dubai on holiday.

It's all about the layering now - I've got the chore jackets, also the heavy wool over-shirts, but have ventured into hoodies since autumn, and recently short sleeved sweatshirts (layered obvs.
In the end wear what you want, just don't new-socialise with tops with food on them 😉

You just hang around with the wrong old people, or rather they don't hang around with you for some reason 🙂

I still wonder where they get the nylon beige trousers that are an inch too short.

From Cotton Traders ..... who also sell hoodies. You can buy hoodies in mothercare too. They are a completely ubiquitous garment for anyone at any age. They're neither fashionable or unfashionable.

Nothing wrong with a hoodie at any age.

Maybe not if it says "Boob Inspector" on the front or you wore it to a wedding or something, but then you can apply that rationale to any item of clothing.

Full zip hoodies are good. I have a lovely Norse Projects one that cost about £90 (yup!).

I'm mid 40's and wear a hoodie every day and everywhere I go unless it's too hot in which case just a t-shirt. Not worn a shirt in any casual setting for about 15 years.

Paired with jeans and either Timberland boots, casual "trainers" (not actual sports shoes) or Converse All Stars. I don't care what anyone thinks.... I value my comfort over everything else.

Chuffin’ heck! Daps, there’s a word I haven’t heard in general usage since I was at school, my mum used to use it as well.
