If I understand correctly, episode 2 was filmed before 1 got panned so unlikely to be changed much.

Episode 3 might tell us more.

Glass of strong Italianred half finished, mellow evening, what better than to settle down to an hour of Clarkson. Oh, Bllx....a pale, ginger imitation!

The reference to shouting says otherwise.

I remind you of this,

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/12175789/Top-Gear-producer-quit-show-over-Chris-Evans-tyrannical-behaviour-sources-claim.html

Can I remind you it turned out to be made up bullshit? (pro tip- if a newspaper interviews everyone for a story, except for the person it's about, it's because they know they'll not get the answer they want)

So far this is even worse than last week. I can now officially say I can not stand Chris Evans. He is so far up his own arse he's practically inside out.

As much as I'd like to see JB get a drive next season, if he doesn't he'd be great as a full time top gear presenter.

Maybe they should do a HIGNFY on it and invite different presenters for each episode.

They could do with changing the format of this bit though.

Is it wrong to say I am quite enjoying the new series - let's face it we have spent the last few series bitching about how dull tg was getting

It has space to improve no doubt but not bad

Worth watching then? After last week I didn't bother, but I can zip through it on the iplayer if there are any little bits that are any good.
Watched socceraid instead. Turns out I dislike it less that I dislike the newer, shitter top gear.

Some great cinematic filming, huge amount of work must go in re shooting stuff from different angles and huge amount of editing as well.

Pity about the poor presentation and shouty man syndrome they seem to have.

That was miles better than last week.

The star part is still rubbish and I think it always will be.

Regarding the cameras etc, I saw them filming the Blackpool piece that was in last weeks episode and the camera crews etc literally filled the prom with all their different vehicles. The tracking shots are done out of Discoverys and I think they had about 5 of them.

Various vans, lighting, mini cams, drones. At least the filming is still as good even if not everyone agrees about the presenters.

I thought both feature film sections out of the studio were pretty good this week. It's the studio bit that disappoints and makes it look like they didn't really try hard enough to reboot the concept. TSIARPC section is crap and the rally cross mod I don't think improves it but I guess it gives something to focus getting a guest in for. It pains me to say it but it turns out Clarkson was quite a good interviewer at making guests relaxed and comfortable.

Nope we all thought the same, totally up himself, but then again went to tidy the kitchen after a couple of minutes of SIARPC. Came back to watch afterwards.

If they insist on keeping SIARPC going then they really need some more interesting and worthy guests than this dull bloke, and Gordon Ramsey who came across as not a very nice man.

Evans just grates with me too much. The Foggy/Compo/Clegg comment about Clarkson and co actually nails why it worked. It's Sunday night telly, should be a bit of a laugh, laid back and relaxing. Evans is just too animated - it's the wrong slot for him.

I quite enjoyed the South Africa bit and thought the idea of having extra people involved was good (they helped to dilute CE), but where was the conclusion? We weren't really given any opinion on any of the three cars tested, at least the old top gear would have an opinion (and at least pretend to give consumer advice), but the new top gear presenters don't have the motoring journalism background and so forget to give an opinion.

Edit: just re-read it and thought I'd add another 'opinion'!

On the whole I am finding the new series OK. I think they should have chopped it up a bit more than they have, but perhaps they'll do that once they've got a bit of momentum up.
Do they still need to do "on tonight's show.....insert 3 stupid comments" and the "some say he's XYZ, or that his Blah Blah goes Bing Bong" when they mention the Stig"???

Yeah, I'd agree with the above about opinions on the cars. They did the car thing, the challenge thing, the driving up a windy road thing but then didn't really come to any conclusion (apart from perhaps saying nothing went wrong on the jag).

And - I normally quite like Chris Evans. I didn't think I would do on Radio 2, but I have his programme on in the morning commute & quite enjoy it; although it could be just to get away from that moron Nick Grimshaw on R1.
But - on Top Gear I don't think he's doing very well. Yeah, it's early days - but he comes across a bit like an excited teenager who's just found a live web feed to the Playboy Bunnies changing room; it's all a bit over-excited, shouty & bouncing around.
And he needs to stop trying to be like Clarkson with the facial expressions & exclamations.

Sorry but it's the same format just made worse with the TSIARPC that drags on for ages. It's just a rip off of what Chris Evans does on his Friday radio show but it doesn't work on TV. The Rallycross is dull too. The presenters with the exception of Matt LeBlanc are also killing the show. It seems a case of quantity over quality as they throw more and more people into the mix to create the ultimate turd.

a) Better than last week
b) Evans less Clarkson like but still grating
c) The presenter relationship isn't there yet, if it ever will be
d) Stunning camera work from the BBC

More like the prior TG, mildy entertaining.

a) agree
b) agree, I really hope he's not there next series
c) see b.
d) Mehhh. I kept thinking the editing was always a little out, the old TG did all the "breaking the editing rules", used slow-motion, smash cuts, etc to really good effect. The new one just breaks the rules and makes it hard to watch.

And the cheating/challenges is just irritating. Sabotaging the winning car with a fish in the air vent is funny. 'ohh look, we won by putting clingfilm over the glasses' is just dull TV, wastes the viewers time when they know the answer from the start.

A friend mentioned to me that CE doesn't work as well when isomething he is doing is scripted. He works really well as a live presenter. His radio show has a plan I suppose but isn't scripted, and it works really well. We all know TG is pretty much 100% scripted and I think he wants to inject energy into the script he has but it's coming accross a bit false. Give it time and I think they'll get it right, matching the material to the presenter well.

It just so happens that the absolute worst bits of top gear, are the bits where evans looks worst. so that's a kind of double whammy.

I don't really like his style tbh but I think it's valid, and it works, it just so happens I don't like it.

Viewing figures down to 2.8m. Unless foreign viewers / program sales can save the day this presenter combination looks doomed.

FWIW Imised to watch TG with Clarkson regulary, not every show. I used to watch dont forget your toothbrush but ever since whenever I've watched EvNs he's been a turnoff. I generally avoid whatever he's doing and the new TG is no different. If he is going to be a success imho he will need a nee and diferetnt audience and that will take time and the BBC will not have the budget or patience for that. Evans is a much of a marmite character as Clarkson

To be honest the new format is just confusing. Too many presenters doing too many things! Why not have a core team of 3-4 who do everything so we'd stand a chance to get to know them? Not watched the aftershow but does TG really need an aftershow? Shouldn't the most exciting content be in the main show anyway?

I thought this week's was slightly better, with CE turning his manic setting down a bit.

He's in a bit of denial on ****ter though

He tweeted: "Overnight television viewing figures for Top Gear have never been less relevant. Obviously some newspapers prefer to live in the past.

"The way Top Gear is being viewed is repositioning the way television is consumed. Last week nine million viewers. This week we shall see."

We shall see indeed.

Rumours already that MLB is being lined up for next series, not Evans.

With Button that would be worth a watch.

Evans doing his usual of shoe horning Sharleen in every show he does. I mean its a show about cars with people talking about cars. Do really we really want to see Evans beer belly at the end of the show?

It seems to be about Evans showing off his ability to buy cars with the Mclaren as a case point. I didnt realise Tinie was that tall. Oh an yes there were cars I think

To be fair I think Evans has a point...

He tweeted: "Overnight television viewing figures for Top Gear have never been less relevant. Obviously some newspapers prefer to live in the past.

I forget the last time I watched anything live. I barely record anything either - it's almost all on demand now. It's only the geriatrics and the unemployed daytime brain mush watchers who watch much live now. So viewing figures taken the old fashion way are pretty much a waste of time.

Agree, but I haven't noticed a massive additional shift in the, what, nine months between the end of the last series and the start of this one which renders overnight viewing figures suddenly so insignficant.

It's a good barometer of public sentiment. If your programme isn't attracting the same number of people who absolutely must watch it at broadcast, then it's a fair bet that the iplayer numbers will suffer alongside this.

Evans is being given a bedding-in period to play with, bosses will profess to be happy with whatever ratings he's getting - for now.

Hard to pin point true, but this is the same 9 months that the BBC took an entire channel to on demand only. I suspect 9 (11 I think) months is currently a hell of a long time in the evolution of tv consumption.

Not at all surprising tbh, dropoff after the first episode of anything is standard but this one in particular would have had a lot of people who'd already decided to hate it, tuning in just so they knew what they were hating. The figures still make it IIRC bbc 2's 3rd biggest show (and one of the ones above it is a short-term gardening special). Nationally, most things that outperformed it, are a soap or the news.

OTOH a top gear episode must cost a lot more to make than The Great British Sewing Bee

This may well have been said before but, well, y'know, 10 pages. I remember when CE took over from Terry Wogan on the R2 breakfast show and I wondered how on earth he was going to do it. Of course he just did his show, as he had been doing at drive time and breakfast on R1 in the '90s. I'm amazed he hasn't been allowed to do his own thing with TG rather than trying to emulate Clarkson et al. Certainly the scriptwriters seem to still be writing for the previous three.
