New series just started on BBC1 - currently doing childishly daft stuff in Thailand.
Which I'm all in favour of.
I hate it.
It's a no from me. It's had its day and promoting fast cars (in fact most cars) , using up the earths resources should be banned.
Grumpy bunnyhop.
Sunday night TV. That'll do for me.
I blame top gear for making me buy the fastest versions of all the cars I've had.
For the extra cost none have got me to a destination any quicker. They have all cost me more than the slower versions would have.
They have all been a bit fun, but have spent the majority of their time with me doing the speed limit.
Next car will be a much slower version of whatever I end up with next.
I liked and would watch top gear until Clarkson and his crew got the boot.
A lot of the fun went out when I realised that the races were staged. It was after 100 camera angles of Gee Atherton and another of Clarkson racing through the streets of Portugal I realised the whole thing was scripted.
I felt daft when I realised it as it had never presented itself as a documentary.
The next wave of presenters just looked scripted and the jokes seemed forced.
Not a motor racing or car fan but find this program oddly entertaining.
Are they going to crash a 2022 v70? if not, i'm not interested.
We're gonna need a bigger "electric car" thread! 😳
turned off once they started breaking the window in the BMW truck
turned off once they started breaking the window in the BMW truck
i thought rimac made makeup
Watch away if you care nothing for climate change. It's purile ladish crap. I will continue to give it a miss.
I hate it
With a passion
Buy three vehicles, Do a race etc.
Bored.
It’s purile ladish crap
You say that like it's a bad thing.
Good start. Seen afew videos regarding the Nevera its an incredible thing. Thailand stuff was good too and loved the Dmax race series, Shame FF got the lurgy he's have given the karts a good go!
Fine bit of no thinking tv. Shame Freddie wasn't in the go-kart/things? racing, he'd be a dead cert for either winning or spectacularly crashing.
A no from me, assuming the annoying ****s Freddie & Paddy are still part of the debacle.
No from me, haven't watched it for years. It was ok when it was actually about cars, now It's just those drips fannying about in cars.
It’s just boring. Stale, tired and formulaic.
Much rather just watch Chris Harris vids on YouTube.
All the staged adventure/competition filler rubbish stopped being watchable about 8 years ago. It’s essentially the same concept every single episode.
Didn't even realise there was a new series starting! Will give it a chance on catch-up some time this week.

Richard Porter said that for those segments to work they have to not be about the car but the journey, hence why the older challenges and specials worked so well. The only one that was purely about the cars was the original £100 car challenge, possibly the Hilux one too, the rest wer about where they were and could have been done in almost any car without losing the narrative. Was hoping that the new gang at Top Gear would have known that but sounds like they still haven't figured that bit out.
It is crap and has been crap for 20 years but I just watch with with finger on fast forward button to watch the 5 minutes that is worth watching most weeks (i.e. the car history items when they appear)
I much prefer GCN to be honest. The one about cycling from coast to coast was epic. Actually feels like something I could do (but slower) whereas razzing around in a supercar I would find dull and expensive.
I share the dislike but sons age7 have stumbled on and getting into all the repeats on beeb3 which means I think we’ve become a TG household 😩
Good fun episode. The Rimac was obscenely fast, the rate it caught the Lambo was phenomenal.
I enjoyed it and liked the fact that they donated their Dainese bodyarmour to the Thai kart racers.
I caught a chunk of it. That Lambo-eating Nerva thing was a bit mad, wasn't it.
haters assemble
Called it, OP.
I can't be bothered to watch it as I did a job with Paddy McGuinness a few years back and he was an absolute nob end/ prima donna and was thoroughly hated by every body there.
Are they going to crash a 2022 v70? if not, i’m not interested.
That'd be a clever trick, it went out of production 6 years ago...
Bit of a weak episode, especially having gone to Thailand.
haters assemble
Called it, OP.
It was intended as irony, not as an instruction 🙄
I thought it was fine - perfect brainless Sunday night TV.
It's just perfectly good Sunday night TV. It's nothing revolutionary but it's good fun and means you don't have to think to hard.
I liked it a lot.
It was intended as irony, not as an instruction
Well, normally I just wouldn't open a thread about Top Gear but you did say haters assemble. 😂
Is what it is - entertainment (kinda). Liked the Rimac bit. The Thailand bit was as dull as anything and as contrived as to be expected (see hay bale falling off the BMW which was just left loose on top whilst driving up a steep hill). Don't actively seek it out anymore but as someone else mentioned it, the kids like it and find it funny...
Much rather just watch Chris Harris vids on YouTube.
TBH I was vaguely hoping they might have dumped the two pricks (and made it the Chris Harris show.. I wish) and got some proper car people in...
and got some proper car people in…
Why? It isn't primarily a car show – it's just a show that has some cars in it.
I like Harris and Flintoff but if they could drop McGuinnes that would be nice. Not sure who to add as a new 3rd person though…..
For inane laddish banter I tend to prefer Ali Hamidi's fishing shows.
The fish don't follow the script so genuine suspense! (Unless someone tells me there's a frogman loitering out of shot, attaching carp to hooks.)
Love or loathe, the Calrkson version was clever. This version isn't.
Bit of a weak episode, especially having gone to Thailand.
Yeah, to think Freddie getting Covid meant it didn’t go as they had planned.
The fish don’t follow the script so genuine suspense!
Fishing with suspense? Has to be scripted.
Well, normally I just wouldn’t open a thread about Top Gear but you did say haters assemble. 😂
Well, if I'd said "Haters ignore" you all still wouldn't have been able to resist 🤣🤣
It’s a no from me. It’s had its day and promoting fast cars (in fact most cars) , using up the earths resources should be banned.
Grumpy bunnyhop.
Based on that logic then you better stop reading the mag and website as its fundamentally paid for by members and advertisers wanting you to buy stuff. As for the product reviews then your in real trouble.
I really enjoyed the episode and thought the temple at the end was spectacular, even if it is a waste of the earths resources 🙂
I want to like it, but I find Paddy and Freddie just a bit annoying. Perhaps one of them would work, but with two it becomes a bit...dare I say it, Northern?
I like Matt Le Blanc, not all of it, he wasn't great in person, but the set pieces between him and Harris were hilarious.
I agree with an earlier comment that it's lacking something.
I haven't watched TG for years as I didn't like the old presenters. The current trio seem much better, I don't know if its a new production team, but even if the format is old / tired, I find it much more enjoyable with these 3, and even my wife likes it!
I want to like it, but I find Paddy and Freddie just a bit annoying. Perhaps one of them would work, but with two it becomes a bit…dare I say it, Northern?
Racist.
I used to love TG but going off it more and more.
YouTube now covers off any car review you could want, 6 months before TG can broadcast it. So therefore, reviews on TG are pointless (even super cars)
Which leaves doing something different and outside the budget of what can be seen on YouTube. That means road trips and prank stuff.
Unfortunately, I think the script writers have run out of ideas on both of the above so its just all a bit predictable.
Ps shouldn't this thread be closed as there have been previous TG threads?
Lol. There’s about 400+ politics/royal threads that are all basically the same thread.
Prequel to Last Of The Summer Wine, substitute three old farts/wheelbarrow/random pointless stuff for..............
ad nauseam
Watched it this evening and was a little bit disappointed. Really does feel like they waste a lot of the opportunities the places the go to offer them in their chase for cheap laughs. Still enjoy Harris' solo bits though so it'll do as Sunday filler TV for a few weeks.
Unfortunately, I think the script writers have run out of ideas on both of the above so its just all a bit predictable.
It's a different team now from when CHM were there, they took them all with them to do the Grand Tour. The new team aren't anywhere near as good as the old lot.
Three of the biggest ****s to ever be given air time.
Edit - I’m thinking of the ones who are now on Amazon! Clarkson, the one with the hair and the hyperactive dwarf.
so its just all a bit predictable.
A bit like Top Gear threads on STW? 😉
I emplore you not to watch Question of Sport. McGuiness. Thats all you need to know, do yourselves a favour and remember it as it was.
Paddy and Freddie are unwatchable. It's just witless waffling. They're like any couple of lairy muppets from any pub in the country.
Fine for Saturday night on itv or daytime adverts for payday loans and online bingo but it's not for me.
Given the amount of use the fast forward button got, it would seem I quite liked that episode, so it's a thumbs up from me.
That Pagani monstrosity has to be one of the most pointless and vulgar vehicles I've ever had the misfortune to behold. Suits McGuiness perfectly.
Looks like it could damn good fun to drive though.
First time I've liked the idea of a Porsche over a Ferrari.
And although it was wrapped up in another silly stunt, those microcars looked interesting for urban use.
So, cars reviewed ranged from £3 million down to £11k, some were electric/hybrid, but haters gonna hate.
Decent enough episode, the city cars thing was a bit silly but raised some decent points-the Citroens width for example.
The 296 is the first propery nice looking Ferrari is a long while IMO, better without the weird stripe though and the GT4 would still be my choice.
Loved the Citroen Ami for a while, Carver looked a laugh though!
The Pagani was horrible. An absolute dinosaur.
Would love a Caver though as a commuter.
Quite enjoyed the German/Austrian piece but the rest was a bit Meh.
Autobahn: there is a bit on my commute to work but its often got heavy traffic. It's straight after the Swiss border so often a bit of a drag strip. Old Autobahn, and there is still a lot, is properly intense. Two lanes, trucks, caravans and stuff then in the other it's a free for all. Then there is the Elephant Races when a truck takes 10k to overtake another truck....
The issue with buying a Cayman is, no matter how good it is in absolute terms there is always the comment “Ah, the 911’s little brother”.
I've loved Carvers for years - I'd love to have a go in/on one.
The issue with buying a Cayman is, no matter how good it is in absolute terms there is always the comment “Ah, the 911’s little brother”.
I'll bear that in mind next time I'm contemplating buying one 🙂
I'm a bit Meh🤷♂️ when it comes to super/HyperCars but that Ferrari was beautiful! Kinda reminds me of a Muira in its flowyness/curves. I wonder how much trade in they'd give me for my 18year old Berlingo?
The issue with buying a Cayman is, no matter how good it is in absolute terms there is always the comment “Ah, the 911’s little brother”.
TBH you’ll always get that, there’s people who drive cars for the driving experience and them who just buy the labels.
The boxster/cayman configuration was always nicer than heavy ass.
The 296 is the first propery nice looking Ferrari is a long while IMO, better without the weird stripe though
100% - I thought exactly the same myself.
I thought the Ferrari had a whiff of kit car about it... 2 episodes in ans so much so dull. I don't mind Flintoff, like Harris and can't abide Peter Kay's chum.
It's background noise in our house not must watch TV.
I fast forwarded the entire thing apart from the bit about the small electric cars.
Not sure if I'm just getting old, or just bored of watching pointless super cars.
I think that the World has moved on. Watching someone drive about in a £3,200,000 waste of resources whilst I’m there in fleece lined trousers because I don’t want to put the heating on was so remote that I couldn’t care less. Especially when the Porsche was, in my opinion, better.
The 296 is very pretty. Nice simple styling. In a single colour it looks stunning.
looks a bit like a Muira (which is not a bad thing)
Personally, I think the Ferrari looks like a squashed Corvette. Something about the front lights is just wrong but I wouldn't mind a go in one.
Paganni - a vulgar trinket. Harris' comment that he was too scared to drift it said it all.
Cayman just shows that there's a diminishing return on "investment" in cars.
The electric feature was actually really interesting, and the Carver was an absolute revelation. I wanted one back in the day when they were BMW powered with a funky parralever front-end but this cut price version looks like a fabulous city car. They didn't make much of the great design features of the Ami but it did show up its Achilles heel on the width and the ease with which it just became traffic like anything else.
Actually a great episode I thought.
Not sure if I’m just getting old, or just bored of watching pointless super cars.
For me, it's just that Top Gear doesn't do its job that well any longer. 3 great cars, great scenery, great production values and what do we get - a bit of scripted banter, too much time messing around on a small track that looked like a dual carriageway, and some standard wheel spinning and smoking. I think it's interesting that Whitehouse and Mortimer's programme, for example, can make a fishing lake anywhere in the UK look beautiful, but Top Gear struggle to make the Alps look interesting. And they have no real enthusiasm for the cars they are driving. Compare what they do to this:
(Henry Catchpole would seem to be a MTBer judging by his bookshelf. He used to write for Cyclist mag iirc.)
Watching someone drive about in a £3,200,000 waste of resources whilst I’m there in fleece-lined trousers because I don’t want to put the heating on was so remote that I couldn’t care less.
Absolutely this.
Last weeks feature on the rimac made the pagani piece obsolete. Suits Paddy McG though. Vulgar.
This episode wasnt interesting. too formulaic - my car is the best etc etc, take it round a small track etc etc, some mountain pass with hairpins etc
Another good episode, the city cars in Paris was interesting and that Porsche was stunning and made the Pagani and Ferrari look pointless
Thought last night was a great episode.
The capabilities of that Range Rover are extraordinary.
Yes, another good one. Very few people need a luxury barge with the capabilities of that Range Rover, but bloody hell it was impressive.
Interesting to see all the problems with the F1 road car as well
Thought it strange they didn't mention the atrocious LR unreliability though.
