Picked up a Quest 2 from Vinted. Never really tried vr before and I'm honestly blown away, I've installed bigscreen, YouTube VR, checked out the iPlayer, done the free introductory app that teaches you the controls, done some beat saber, a VR shooting range thing and played some free stuff in the browser.

I know it's not recommended for little ones, but I've let my 6 yr old watch a few minutes of some national geographic vids - an underwater exploration and Free Solo (she likes climbing.) I think in short bursts and with supervision, she should be ok to watch some stuff, I'm not planning on letting her play owt vigorous for extended periods.

Anyone else still using one? Any recommendations? Must get apps? Must watch vids? Is it just a gimmick and I'll soon be bored!?

You could have someone’s eye out with that 🍆

I bought a google cardboard once to top up an order for free postage. Very basic but still quite an impressive novelty. It must still be around here somewhere..

For gaming it's not a gimmick, I got my rift set up again recently and still love it. Unconvinced by other uses so far.

Are you playing standalone or do you have a PC you can connect it to? If you're into any driving or flight sims, or Elite, they're amazing in VR.

Blade and Sorcery has a quest version ( definitely not child friendly). Superhot VR is a very good short game too.

Pistol Whip is outstanding fun and keeps getting updated by the developer.

Any of the Beat Sabre/Audio Trip style "spasm in time with the music" games

The Climb 2 makes me feel sick after a while, in a good way

And as mentioned above it is superb when used along with your PC: Star Wars Squadrons is an absolute must if you ever wanted to sit in an X-Wing cockpit and stick it to the Empire. I think Pistol Whip is available as a PC download too, with the added bonus of being able to use your own tunes.

Pistol Whip is ace. And Beat Sabre. I found the flying ones made me feel sick.

I bought mine for Half Life Alyx which is breathtaking, needs a fairly decent PC to run it. Last time I tried it, I couldn't get the oculus to connect, which was gutting.

Try wearing a hr monitor when you play 😉

Into The Radius and Walking Dead Saints and Sinners are both fantastic full games and really really fun if you want something a bit more in depth. ITR is aiming for a Stalker VR kind of vibe, it's very good. I haven't played the Quest 2 standalone version but it's just a graphically downgraded full PC version. The S&S standalone is pretty good, it's cross buy so you get the PC if you buy the quest and visa versa. Could be a good way of testing if your PC can run any of this stuff.

You no longer need a Facebook account, just a 'Meta' account but it doesn't need to be tied to a real Facebook page.

I actually use a Pico 4 for PCVR so that's Bytedance which is even worse than Meta tbh. Great PCVR headset though.

@caher Facebook account not required. Get a used one, if you get bored you can probably sell it in a couple if months without losing much money (that's how I've justified it anyway!)

I'm using it as a stand-alone device, don't have a pc. I think I'll get pistolwhip at some point.

I've noticed a couple of instances where moving round a game environment when I'm stood still makes me feel pretty weird.

I'd like to try something like warbirds, but I think I need to get more used to it before I dive into that 🤮

Would defo like to try SW squadrons but that's a pc game?

Watched a NG short about climbing Everest last night, that was great. Going to let my daughter watch that this evening , 🙂

Steam has a whole section for VR games. I have an older Vive that has been mainly used for Google Earth, DCS World (flight sim) and Elite. Phantasmaphojbia (or however it is spelled) is another game with VR support, but as it is ghost hunting is legitimately stressful. Not for kids.

I bought Lawn Mower simulator because I thought it had VR support. Sadly not, or at least not yet.

Walkabout golf is very good. Played it online with a few friends and it's a good laugh because you can talk to each other while playing.

Super hot vr is good bit of a workout and you need a bit of room as you're moving and ducking.

The games come on offer so I just wait for those offers. Usually get game for half price.

I've hooked it up to my pc and have played half life alyx which is on a different level.

If you have a decent bit of space or can take it out in the garden there is a game on App Lab called Tea For God, really fun. Physical movement only generating 'impossible spaces' - there is a free demo I think, really weird and very hard to get used to walking around your room with a headset on.

This is proper fun if you're in any way inclined towards cheesy metal.

There's a massive library of user mapped songs online as well.

Free bird on beat saber is a lot of fun. I'm 43, is this acceptable behaviour!? 🤓

It comes with Res Evil 4 so I might not survive the day...

My son has had one for a few years now and loves it. Yes the FB account was an utter bi*** at the start.

Just to reiterate in case anyone reading this is on the fence, FB account no longer required.

My daughter has been enjoying vr painting.

FIL was up for a go so he watched the entire 10 minute scuba experience then watched free solo and declared Alex Honnold to be a mad bastard.

What's your highest level on free bird then 🤣 I have managed to scrape through on expert, but E+ is much tougher than some.

Smash drums is also really good. 37 here. It's a hoot. I bought it to play Half Life Alyx, and now here we are three years later with the Quest 1 sold, a Quest 2 for standalone/rhythm games, a Pico 4 for PCVR and a PSVR 2 arriving next week 😜 It's worse than bikes

I'm scraping through hard at the moment. Only downloaded it today though! Sandstorm by Darude is a bit mental as well.

Any more parents' experience with these?

My son has saved up all his cash and wants one. He never spends any money and this is the first thing he's actually expressed an interest in buying. He's 11 and we already have an Xbox in the house.

I'm just concerned it will be of short lived interest, unlike the xbox, none of his mates have one and I just can't see it keeping him interested.

It's a huge amount of cash to spend on what I think (miserable old dad) is just a whim.

There's version 3 coming out soon. Probably a few v.2's being flogged to purchase the upgrade.

I've a v.2 and it's fun.

We find that ours comes out (PS-VR) when our girls have friends around (especially in rubbish weather) – as with your son, none of our girls' friends have VR so they love playing on it when they are here. One of my daughters can complete Expert+ levels on Beat Saber. I have absolutely no idea how she does it – I can barely process what is happening and she's there just smashing through it.

Quest 2 here - 2 years now.

Am a parent but the 'kids' are 25 n 26 so not really comparable. I'd be happy with supervised short bursts as you describe though.

RE4 is awesome - some real tense moments.

Walkabout Golf - fantastic game. the haptics are spot on for hoitting the ball, the courses are fun and the 2player multiplayer room is really good fun. dont lean on the railing on the desert course to watch the sunset like I did - my only experience of the VR/Reality fall!

Onwards is ok, expect to get hosed as a noob though. I found holding a two handed weapon awkward till i invested in a stock that keeps the controllers fixed relative to each other and makes weilding the weapon more intuitive.

warplanes - stunning WW1 fighter game, much like Red baron from the 90's(i think)

Wander - google street view in VR - awesome!

Puzzling Places - 3d jigsaws in VR (bear with me!!) - very 'Zen', quite satisfying and a great way to lose 4 hours without noticing.

🙂

dive in.

just seen the OP is 5 mopnths ago.
