What did he do wrong with Star Trek?

I loved what he did with Star Trek. But then, I only scored 5 out of 15 on the BBC's sci-fi quiz, so I'm clearly not qualified to judge...

I always manage to avoid watching trailers for films I want to see because it often spoils some of the good bits!

I fail to see what Abrams did wrong with Star Trek though, suitably dark, funny and stuff went bang. What's not to like?

Agree with passtherizla. Trailers seem to be a synopsis of films, rather than a teaser, these days. Best avoided.

With all the saturation of clips, photos and plot lines being released on a daily basis and that's not even including drone fly-bys of film sets, I'm fairly confident I won't have to go and see the film when it comes out

I have managed to avoid all that so far... If it says start wars on it, it gets ignored.

tbh If the film opened with Jar jar Binks getting some quality time with a tribe of tuskan raiders, I'd be very happy

"Ooh mooey mooey! Meesa like you, You-sa have big rifles"

That actually looks pretty good! Also liked what Abrams did with ST so looking forward to seeing what he does with this. The front-on shot of the X-wing pilot properly says Star Wars to me 🙂
The Jurassic World trailer OTOH looked like it has absolutely none of the feel of the originals.

I enjoyed watching them, but I don't remember a single thing about them now.
Hopefully these wont seem as disposable.

Just in time for Black Friday 2015...

Nice teaser trailer though - liked the x-wings over the lake.

Pacifist, I assume?

Or, if it wasn't a typo, achingly cool of you to open a thread with the title of this one just to tell us you ignore the subject.

You know they're just films about spaceships, right? They're not works of art.

The last three prequels were horrible dire shite. And they've irreparably tainted the original three, robbing them of any accidental charm or innocence they just might have had. I'll not be going to see this...fool me twice etc

I enjoyed the Abrams Star Treks. A friend who is a big fan of Star Trek enjoyed them on one level but felt they were too beholden to spectacle and lacked some cerebral element he expects from Star Trek. Too much lens flare and explosions and too little exploring strange new worlds and civilisations, for him.

I don't think so.. it's just more of the back story that's all. The visual style and delivery of say Jedi was cool but the content wasn't that much different really, when you get down to it.

That's the next one, did he miss the big hint at the end of the second one?

buy your objection from play.com

I bought the films instead.

I think he'll do an okay job.

Super 8 had a feel not to dissimilar to the original films.

The vapour trails off the Falcon was rather nice.

OK, I realise that this really sets me out as a geek but I just noticed that the X-wings aren't X-wings. Or at least they're different to the ones we've known - offset wings for a start...

I guess it's set 30 years on so things would have changed but that's actually one of the things I did like about episodes 1-3 - the way you could see where things came from - stormtroopers, x-wings, tie fighters, etc.

EDIT - I'm clearly not that much of a geek 🙂 I'm way behind

Sold.

But then I was sold on the Phantom Menace trailer as well... but this looks to have kept a lot of the 'feel' of the classic movies... time will tell...

Except, they're kinda not. They're much closer the original concept art than they were in the classic trilogy.

The countdown begins, nerds everywhere have 1 year to prepare themselves to be apocalypically offended by the whole thing, no matter how good it turns out to be.

I liked this from Bill Shatner

Given the complaints after the last (first) 3 films, he'll know what to avoid.

It certainly had a feel of the originals.

I've heard of product placement, but that's silly!

Guess Walls must be the official ice cream of Endor.

I hope they manage to integrate a good part for a (now elderly) Jar Jar Binks in the new film, some real room for character development was missed in revenge of the sith

Very obviously Abrams style visually (I actually really liked all the lens flare and wobbly, jerky CGI stuff in ST).

Was never going to happen, but would have loved to see Abrams directing a Whedon script for the new films.

X-wings ripping up rooster-tails across a lake, the Millenium Falcon doing a low-level chicken run against Tie-fighters, here's my money, two tickets please?
I loved the Abrams Star Trek films, no bloody soft focus on Shatner every time a pretty alien bint shows up!

Even my son (5yo at the time) said that Jar Jar was "a bit stupid"

Here's hoping that Gungans don't have a long lifespan...
