Makes me happy(ish) because I love Thor: Ragnarok and What We Do In The Shadows.
New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi will write and direct a new “Star Wars” film, Disney announced Monday.
Waititi has shot from indie acclaim to mainstream Hollywood success in recent years, overseeing Marvel superhero smash hit “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017 before winning a screenplay Oscar for Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit” in February.
He also directed the first season finale of “The Mandalorian,” the hit television show set in the blockbuster sci-fi franchise universe.
No date was set for the new movie. But the first of three currently scheduled “Star Wars” on Disney’s release calendar is penciled in for December 2022.
Announcing the news on May 4 – a date typically celebrated by “Star Wars” fans around the world who wish each other “May the 4th be with you” – Disney also confirmed reports that “Russian Doll” co-creator Leslye Headland will develop a new television series set in the same universe.
“Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series, which adds to a growing list of ‘Star Wars’ stories for Disney’s streaming platform including ‘The Mandalorian,’ now in post-production on Season Two,” said the announcement on StarWars.com.
According to Hollywood trade reports, Headland’s live-action show will be a “female-driven action thriller” and “set in an alternate timeline from the usual ‘Star Wars’ universe.”
“The Mandalorian,” featuring the viral internet sensation Baby Yoda, was the flagship launch show for on-demand streaming platform Disney+ last year, proving a hit with critics and audiences.
In addition, two other new live-action “Star Wars” television series are in the works for Disney+, including the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and a prequel to movie spin-off “Rogue One.”
Subscribed to Disney plus today so me and the boy can watch the new Clone Wars series, first two episodes are awesome!!
Just watched the first half of Rise of Skywalker on Disney plus. I can honestly say I've never seen such a mess of a blockbuster movie.
Sadly true Martin.
I used to truly love the SW universe but I'm near totally uninterested now.
Such a shame that they can't even make a good cash cow from the franchise.
I'm fine with them milking it, just make good movies ffs!
I’m fine with them milking it
I wasn't

The series that’s 10 years old?
yes and no, they made a seventh series that overlaps the films.
Have to say though I hope this new film is set during the time of the online game The old republic, that would be class. The cinematic cut scenes from the game were really well done.
For any punk pop fans
The series that’s 10 years old?
No the new series.
Mandalorian was excellent, possibly the best star wars production yet.
Good to hear about the Obi Wan project, McGregor was one of the few really good things about the prequels.
Just watching the main saga movies with my daughter, 11.
I've not seen the last film, deliberately, as I gather that JJ bottled it. Will find out for myself early next week.
I liked Rise of Skywalker because they tied up assorted bits, but that’s all. The pacing at the start I thought was rushed and it took forty minutes before it stopped to take a breath.
I binged the mandalorian a couple of days ago and thought it was excellent but it is a bit like a fist full of dollars with robots
I can honestly say I’ve never seen such a mess of a blockbuster movie.
You don't get out much to the cinema then? I don't think I've ever seen a Hollywood blockbuster movie that isn't a complete mess.
Such a shame that they can’t even make a good cash cow from the franchise.
$9 billion and counting. I think they've made it a pretty good cash cow so far.
I'll refer you to the Edinburgh defence made by G Lucas himself every time...These are movies for children*. That middle aged (mostly white men it has to be said) complain most vocally about how "their" Star Wars has been destroyed by Disney/Lucasfilm, something loads of them refer to apparently un-ironically as the "Empire" a little bit of me cheers from the sidelines.
*it doesn't excuse the terrible plots, the plainly idiotic scripts and "comedy" But as I complained about one to my then 8 year old son, he looked at me with just a hint of incredulity and said "So did you have your eyes shut when the massive spaceship crashed into the planet then?" He was absolutely spot on.
Ha, well said Nickc. For a kid the movies are pretty damm good.

I thought it was about as good as it could have been given the 2 before it. I just didnt invest in Rey, she wasnt vulnerable enough so I didnt care, Kylo was far more interesting.
Not watched Mandalorian yet, but Clone Wars cartoons and Rebels are the best Star Wars stuff since the original series.
The pacing at the start I thought was rushed and it took forty minutes before it stopped to take a breath.
And the pacing at the end which made the final scenes of LOTR look snappy.
These are movies for children
Then why are they so effing serious and self-reverential? I can think of many children's films (Paddingtons 1 and 2, just off the top of my head) that I enjoyed greatly as 40+ year old.
I binged the Mangalorean a couple of days ago and thought it was excellent but it is a bit like a fist full of dollars with robots
I really liked the Mangalorean too and this is kind of what George Lucas envisaged for the original movies...a kind of spaghetti western in space.
The more later movies were so disappointing Rogue 1 aside. I never thought they could do worse than the three prequels but they trumped those with the later 3. Better made and acted than the prequels but the plots were just atrocious and blatant re-hashes. I guess Disney have their eye on grooming a new generation of Star Wars fans to feed the franchise and keep the cash cow going. Us kids of the '70's are not their target audience. Though quite proud of the fact my kids favourite films are the original 3 and havn't been woo'd by the newer films by the fancy pants special effects.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Hollywood blockbuster movie that isn’t a complete mess.
Even looking at popcorn movies in just the past decade or so, plenty of the Marvels, Harry Potters, first couple of Star Treks etc do an entertaining job. I enjoyed The Force Awakens - thought they created a decent dynamic between the leads, some excellent action sequences. It's the squandering of that goodwill that is so disappointing. The latest one gives the appearance that no-one actually gave a shit, they just wanted it over with.
The get-out clause that these are solely films for children doesn't apply to the blockbuster market. They are family movies which always appealed to a wider fan-base. If they were just for new young viewers then why shoehorn in the original cast and make the entire thing an attempted nostalgia fest?
I really liked the Mangalorean
Star Wars/Back to the Future hybrid?
Ah, Back to the Future...I'll admit, we were spoiled in the 80s.
The more later movies were so disappointing Rogue 1 aside
I know I'm in a minority but I really enjoyed Solo too.
Sounds like your lad's got your number already Nickc.
I'd be interested to see Jon Favreau direct a Star Wars movie following his sterling work on The Mandalorian. Might have been a better bet than JJ in hindsight.
Oh, and of course it's very welcome news that Taika is directing one.
He's a super talent with great sensibilities.
I enjoyed Solo, too. But I'm finding it progressively harder to get excited about Star Wars news, while I quite enjoyed the Kylo/Rey films they are very throwaway.

That's ace 😎
Solo probably my favourite of the “new” films. And, being a prequel, my hopes were very low going into it.
TROS was OK, lots of big battles, dipped back into the original trilogy and rounded things off nicely. The 2 before it were not good, especially TLJ. Rehashed stories that did not move the overall story ark forward, felt very groundhog day. The prequels were OK despite Jar Jar Binks and at least had original stories and fitted the story arc.
Rogue 1 was great, Solo not bad and I've enjoyed the Mandalorian.
Disney have said they want to concentrate more on the TV series, if Mando is the future standard I'll be happy and keep paying for Disney+.
Mandalorian was
excellenttolerable, possibly the best star wars production yet.
FTFY
Clone Wars cartoons and Rebels are the best Star Wars stuff
Is what I think. Better plot, characters and acting than any of the films. I enjoyed The Mandalorian too. It was like Firefly meets Star Wars with a dash of Shogun Assassin
Not a western fan hols?
Always thought it would be good if the main movies were the kids blockbusters, but then they had TV series with a bit more bite, in same way Marvel has the big blockbuster films, but then makes Marvel TV series that are 18 like the Punisher? Clearly there is a market for both?
A well told story doesn't have to be a multi-million CGI fest and whilst i'm guessing Mandalorian wasn't cheap, good how they still used puppets for Yoda, not just loads of CGI.
Quite liked the humour of the Mandolorian too, especially the two speeder riders in last episode.
I'm quite excited of a Waititi-helmed star wars movie. He's done some great movies and TV.
Also enjoying the usual competition to see who can have the most high-minded criticism of some movies about space wizards.
I used to truly love the SW universe but I’m near totally uninterested now.
I think it's called adulthood 😉

I loved Daredevil and Punisher. The future of Marvel TV looks grim now that Disney plus exists though. Sanitised movie tie ins all the way. Would love to see a gritty tale set in the Star Wars universe. Something following a bunch of criminals.
Waititi is a great director, but I think a lot will come down to how much control he’s actually given. The script that Colin Trevorrow had for the Star Wars film seemed much more promising. I’ve tried watching Rise of Skywalker twice and fell asleep both times. My son loves it though and he’s the target audience.
Not a western fan hols?
Deadwood was excellent. Westworld was sometimes good, sometimes not. That John Wayne movie where he was really fat and got shot in the gut and died really slowly was rubbish.
Quite liked the humour of the Mandolorian too, especially the two speeder riders in last episode.
That's a taster of what a Taika Waititi Star Wars film would resemble. It'll be great fun.
There's elements of a half decent show in the Mandalorian but I was left a bit flat by it. Some episodes were rehashes of rehashed stories and some episodes felt rushed, not sure why they're only 35min long for a streaming platform?
Jedi Knight Kanan Jarus tells it like it is..nsfw.

He’s an excellent producer and director but you do realise there were 8 different directors for The Mandolorian.
Waititi and Chow did the finest 2.

Yes, but I assumed he was what they now call "show runner" on it. More than just the directing it was the concept, the story arc and the general tone than really impressed me.
Very classy, highly satisfying and never cheesy.
He was bit also let them work as a team and add their own flair, there’s a documentary on Disney+ about it. He is brilliant he’s made some cracking films he takes pride and passion in his work.

Will look that out, ta.
Yes, it's the best thing he's made since Swingers.
