Where would I go to find a nice jacket that smart enough to wear over a suit, probably wool, probably black/grey/navy - never needed to have a smart coat before. All my current outdoor jackets look more in place up a mountain

John Lewis, mainly because they have a good range of navy and black in various fits. M&S also.

Even if you don't fancy JL prices, once you've tried on a couple in there you can get an idea of what style/colour you like and then just descend on the local outlet/retail park - Moss Bros, Racing Green, TK Maxx and all that lot.

(Navy is typically harder to come by, but I prefer them as a black wool coat can be a bit 'deadening')

Get yourself to TK-Max and spend £100 on a £300-£400 wool coat that fits you.
There are some bargains to be had in the gold label section if you are prepared to dig.

Only bigger TK Maxx carry 'gold label' stock; if your nearest doesn't, don't bother.
What's your budget?
How close are you to nearest 'outlet village'; usually some choice there.
My preference is Crombie - not Abercrombie & Fitch....shudders.
Probably still some black friday stuff still knocking around but most retailers will be removing sale stock as they want to shift full-priced stock in run-up to Christmas.

I have one of these which is a lovely coat for the cold weather.

Also have a black mac from Charles Tyrrhitt which is good for milder or wet days.

M&S for me, decent range and price. I bought a wool coat for over a suit a couple of weeks ago, think it was about £129, looks nice and smart and not too "old".

Also worth noting that M&S frequently do 20% off everything promotions so worth signing up to their mailing list.

Charity shops? Sort of thing people grow out of and give away, often barely worn.

That M&S one looks good and might have to brave TK-maxx. Budget is £100-200.

Looks like I'll have to brave actual shops rather than on-line to make sure the fit is good.

Im currently wearing navy one I bought from TK Maxx, it has the brand Harry Brown. I’d go there again if I needed another of similar style.

I opened this page filled with incredulity that someone could be daft enough to want a jacket with bluetooth / Alexa integration.

It's a sign of the times - "smart" everything.

This. Or have a look in vintage/antique shops. I got myself a beautiful 100% cashmere overcoat for £100 in our local antiques place.

Daft I may be, but my limit of 'smart' is using alexa as a voice controlled radio
