Hello All
It is time for my 16 year old Karrimor Sabre SF 35 litre rucksack to be replaced. It has been fantastic but the DWR coating is coming off and I find it uncomfortable for carrying heavier loads if I am going camping.
I have been looking at the military style offerings from Karrimor/ Berghaus/ Snugpack, round about 40/ 45 litre capacity. The problem is, with me being 6ft 2 tall, most of these packs seem a bit small on me and sit too high on my back to allow efficient load transfer through the hip strap.
I much prefer the simple top loading military rucksack arrangement as opposed to the more modern rucksacks with loads of zips/ pointless (to me) features. If I want to stick with the military style rucksack is it the case that the only answer is to go up to a much larger capacity in order to get a good fit with the weight coming through the hip strap and not the shoulder straps?
Thanks for any help.
Have a look at Aiguille Alpine sacks, they come in different back lengths
https://www.aiguillealpine.co.uk/products/rucksacks-bags/
Also some companies make bags with lightweight adjustable back systems e.g. Vaude, Deuter, Gregory
OP
Have you looked at the Deuter (Air contact) bags?
They have a lot of adjustability in the strap positions.
I have at least 3 Aiguilleal Alpine bags and love them. I prefer bags with zips and have 10, 30 and 50 litre bags. I’m 196cm and the long bags fit fine. If you want a military look buy the green!
Most military bags are cut short so you can still have kit on your belt. (I have some of those as well e.g. 5.11)
Unless you get a Berghaus Crusader in a longer back length, 4 maybe?, I find the military stuff to be way too short for me (at 6'3)
For a simple, robust top loader that'll fit you, have a look at something like the Exped Lightning
Macpac do different back lengths in their harnesses, worth checking out.
Thanks - the Aiguille rucksacks look really good I have to say.
@andykirk - If you're anywhere near the Lakes it's really worth popping in to see them at Staveley, next to Wilf's cafe
