Looking for assistance from long time glasses wearers please.
I’m only a couple of years in to needing reading glasses, I have a relatively light prescription that Vision Express sorted into a pair of Rayban frames and work well.
Now, I’ve just bought a 2nd pair of glasses, Oakley Holbrooks from Misterspex in their sale. I furnished them with the prescription acquired from VE but the glasses have arrived and I can’t see a thing! The old(er) glasses are set for phone and book reading distance, the new glasses seem as they aren’t magnifying anything and text is not all that clear either.
How have I got this wrong? I supplied the same prescription as my current glasses, why aren’t they the same to look through? What info did I not give them to make them the same? Any clues please as I can send them back and I’d like them remade so they work.
Pupililiary distance or distance of the lenses to your face might be different ? But neither probably a massive issue.
More likely there’s been a transposition error some where either you, them or your optician in writing the prescription down of the 3 values for each eye (or more values if you are bi/vari focal - I assume that is as I have no experience Of either of these but sounds as if you have a single vision lense)
Quick check is the sphere +ve or -ve. Would expect the former for reading.
Yeah I thought about that. I measured the pupil distance myself following their guidelines and all the other info was digital, so difficult to see where it went wrong. I’m yet to contact them but trying to work out what I didn’t ask for to get the same glasses. I only didn’t go back to VE as I found them expensive, but at least I could see properly! Maybe I need to swallow the cost as I clearly don’t know what I’m doing.
EDIT - this is the prescription supplied
Sphere Cylinder Axis PD
Right eye 0.75 -0.25 10 35.00
Left eye 0.75 0.00 0 35.00
Last time I ordered glasses on line I did the same as you. They were ok vision wise but a really cheap rubbish pair that broke quickly and I’ve not done it again.
You could try contacting VE and ask to confirm your prescription (you might be on holiday and need some in an emergency or you’ve found some that VE don’t sell) but you’ve already paid them for the eye test and you’re under no obligation to only buy glasses from them so no real need to make up a reason. Then if it matches go back to the seller of the new ones and ask them to check them?
The other thought is if it was a couple of years ago then might be worth getting a retest before buying new ones…
Edit another thought is can you get or try a pair that are roughly that in a supermarket/pharmacy - you’re very Little astigmatism such that the off the shelf pair not adjusting for it will make little difference.
Test was only done in July this year and I’m happy with the glasses produced from it; just wanted an extra pair for working in.
Just rechecked the prescription and I’ve just noticed at the bottom aided VA 6/4 dist N5. The this info wasn’t asked for on the Misterspex site. Maybe I this is the reason for the extra magnification on my older pair?
Check the focal length of each by focusing a light down to a point. Will give a rough idea. Sounds like the wrong prescription. And +0.75. I wish (+5 with an extra +1.5 for varifocals and a double astigmatism to go with it)

<Laughs hollowly at your single digit prescription.>
My local indie optician supplied Oakley frames and resized the reading lenses from an old pair. Only 100 quid all in, glasses have taken loads of abuse, dropped, sat on, but still intact. Well pleased.
There may be nothing wrong with your prescription. Misterspex may have made the glasses wrongly. If you haven't already you should go back to them and discuss.
I recently ordered some varifocals from Optilab. Around the time I was expecting delivery they contacted me to tell me that they had received the lenses but on checking they found the prescription had been wrongly manufactured. They had the correct lenses made and the glasses shipped to me with very little delay. Optilabs quality control had picked this up before they shipped to me. Things can go wrong and Misterspex may have made an error.
Btw, all dealings with Optilab were excellent.
70mm pd for Reading is extremely wide, I’m guessing this is wrong.
I also think you have given the distance correction.
PM me your Rx and I’ll check it all over.
