Just joined us, very delighted and surprised! Another working cocker to join our 2 springers and other working cocker. A great little chap, only a few days in but settled really well, and responding brilliantly ... happy days ahead!

DAMMIT!!! This is not helping me, especially not after seeing the Jack Russel puppies at the weekend.

Lovely looking dog though, truly spaniels are the most awesome dogs every!

Breed name really.

We've had a Working Cocker, now have a Working Springer and a 'normal' Springer.

Obviously 'normal' means crackers - how anyone manages with a Springer living in a flat/small house/garden is beyond me.

I need to caveat my statement earlier about spaniels being the best dogs in the world. I will do so by repeating the often used quote, "Everyone thinks their dog is the best dog in the world, and they are all correct."

The world would be a much better place if humans were as loving, enthusiastic and forgiving as dogs are.

Originally bred to flush Woodcock from dense cover, hence the name Cocker.

Working line cockers trend to be slightly more compact than their showline cousins. They tend to be highly driven and very eager to please as long as they are given a task to do. There is a very good reason why many police sniffer dogs are WCS, they have excellent noses and absolute focus, to the point of obsession.

In the field they tend to be fearless and will work absolutely tirelessly in the densest of cover, but need an expert hand to train properly, otherwise they have a tendency to go "self-employed".

They are also real "people" dogs, so love nothing more than sitting on a lap and being fussed.

My son got a cocker from a gamekeeper when he was on a student placement on a small Scottish island. He’s an absolute joy, very cute and very driven , absolutely the epitome of the breed. Hard work to train but persistence has paid off and he’s very proud of him. He recently got a lab puppy from the keeper on the estate where he now lives. He recently sent some videos of the pup learning to walk to heel at about 16 weeks, and came out with the immortal statement “every day I spend with the lab shows just how thick the Cocker is….”

There is a saying that labs are born half trained and spaniels die half trained 🙂

Brown one is 8 years old and a working sprocker (mutt really, before sprockers were a "thing"). Yellow one is 3 years old and a working cocker. Both absolutely mental, the 8 year old slightly less so these days.

Dammit, I can never figure out how to share photos. (I refuse to use a paid for hosting site for something used this seldom)

I can understand that, but like to think my Spaniels are so intelligent and independently minded that they choose not to be fully trained. See the "my dog is perfect" quote above 😀

She's 2 and a bit now. I think based on how rubbish we've managed to train her, she's got a bit of spaniel in her!

He's half Staffy, quarter Boxer, quarter Lab. So a Staffoxador, maybe!?

I posted at the time about losing my first dog very suddenly in unexpected circumstances (which I'm still not fully over), and our other dog - a Boxer X Staff rescue - wasn't coping very well as an only dog without his big brother. Now he gets to be big brother to Sam 😁

Sorry for the thread hijack!

Spaniels - Gotta love them.

Mine are having a cuddle tonight after terrorising the forest today. Molly is 12 years old, Duggie is 12 weeks.

How true!

Bonniethedog is a Cockapoo - with a working cocker mum and poodle dad. Supposedly poodle's are intelligent, and I suppose she is in the same way that genius scientists are - incredible intellect, little common sense. Couple that to the WCS half (and the breeder warned us - keep her busy or she'll go self-employed, and you won't like the jobs she finds to do) and she's a little fleece coated bundle of busy.
