I thought it would have taken a few more days to choose the successor but I guess the financial losses in preventing tourist access to the Sistine chapel is adding up 🤔😉.

I would imagine the hospitality is pretty good for the cardinals, great food and wine. So I'm surprised they didn't spin it out a bit longer. Probably be a good knees up tonight though.

I don't know about that, I watched Conclave, it looked like a canteen run by nuns.

If you see the video of when the white smoke appears: There's a little seagull chick who has decided he's chosen the wrong spot for a nap.

Who do you think Bishop Brennan would have voted for if he had made Cardinal?

I'm currently listening on Radio Scotland as I like the drive time news etc and all I hear is how "we" are all excited about these old guys over 70 , no danger of a female ever getting involved

Why do we need to  still have have separate schools  ? Muslims don't get their own schools or do they ?

You can tell I'm not getting excited here

BBC commentator has just word for word read out Pope Leo 13th Wikipedia entry. I looked it up when they started going on about being a social reformer like his name predecessor, thinking that I remember at least back as far as the 70's and don't recognise the name so his social reform must be quite old!

And there he is - no hat to speak of!

All sorts of faith schools exist

Might be better if they didn't like organised religions.

So we have a "moderate", I'd have prefered to hear the word "progressive" but there you go. And what's with "Leo", sounds wimpy to me whereas my local media uses "Léon" which seems much more appropriate - hit man with a heart of gold who falls for a 12 year old girl. 🙂

I can't help but think the appointment is a little too political, I hope Léon earns my respect over the coming years as François did.

Why what did he do to earn your respect ? I thought he did the sum total of nothing to reform the Catholic Church

Perhaps you missed the cardinals he appointed (including Leo) which were at the moderate to progressive end of the spectrum, his meetings with and influence on world leaders, his declarations on world issues... .

Far harder to think of things he did i disapproved off, perhaps you can list a few, Funkydunk, for balance.

If it’d been a twelve year old boy it would have been more Catholic church appropriate

Women, homosexuality, contraception, abortion

You know just the insignificant stufff

Still he did convert a palace in Rome to a hostel for poor people so all is forgiven for one of the most influential post in the world. In terms of success they are up there with Trump

Plenty more to add to Funkys list as well.

Catholicism is a vile coercive cult that will lie cheat and cover up criminality to protect itself

When Trump finds out how rich the Vatican is, he'll try and annexe it.

To be fair, the Catholic church is trying (at glacial pace)  to find a way forward on many of those issues.

Trump is desperately trying to get back there as quick as he can.

Women - François promoted the role of women within the church

Homosexuality - he authorised the blessing of homosexual unions

Contraception - little progress but did authorise the use of contraception during epedemics

Abortion - no progress, however, in a court house near you:

We have a new record. Less than 24 hours after getting the top job it turns out he’s another on good at turning a blind eye to child abuse. Do the cardinals not know about each other or is that they have all done it so it’s not a factor in their decisions

If you mean he tolerated the presence of a suspected child abuser in church property for a while then it was on his wiki page and has been well known for years.

He's the Pope, absolutely no political or judicial power in the Catholic country I live in. He's a spiritual leader that can be ignored (unlike the head of the Church of England who is also the monarch, head of state and can meddle in the making of laws.)

If you don't like what the Pope says, ignore him.

I find it amusing that Trump is so keen on the new Pope who has been openly critical of him.

In Illinois voters do not register as members of a political party. So presumably anyone can vote in the primaries there, including Democrat voters

This is true, but he has never voted in a Democratic primary but has voted in many Republican ones.

@doris5000 that's ace but it wasn't that. It was a job advert, and right at the bottom amongst all the normal guff was the gem 'the holy see is NOT an equal opportunities employer'.

I wonder if he'll release all the religious texts that the catholic church has apparently hidden for generations 😉

And what conclusion are you drawing from that?

For me it suggests that he perhaps wasn't bothered about who the Democrat nomination was but felt more strongly about the Republican nomination. Which isn't too dissimilar to how a feel..... Biden or Harris? Meh ...Donald Trump? No!

And do you know if you can vote in more than one primary election at the same time? I don't, it would seem logical that you can't.

The bottom line is that firstly no Catholic clergyman is allowed to engage in party politics without special dispensation, not something which would likely be granted in a country like the United States. And secondly that the person in question is known to be hostile towards the right-wing of the Republican Party including Donald Trump.
