Currently running a Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, good size, great battery life and the water and dust proof stuff is great.

Time for a change, I'm looking for a great battery life device, NFC and that is also waterproof and dust/shock proof.

Don't want Apple and not overly keen on Samsung. Sony would be great but they don't do a Compact version of current phones.

So what to get? What have you got and how is in, in terms of real-world experience of using it?

Google Pixel 4 looks good but has a small battery (almost same as the one in current phone) so given it is an inch larger screen and has some motion detection stuff, I suspect the battery will be drained by the end of the day. I don't stream music or films but do probably spend about 4 hours a day using the phone for Web/messaging.

Why are you changing, out of interest?

Hauwei P30 Pro - best deal and best phone I've ever had by massive margin.

Optical zoom is amazing, as is camera - battery life, screen quality, water resistant, speed. Great size too.

All for £256 from O2 refresh - look out for those deals.

Partly vanity and mainly as I've had the phone for almost 2.5 years and fancy a change. Nothing wrong with it...probably pass it on the Partner as she is looking for a new phone but doesn't know what she wants.
I've obviously been listening to the kids too much but seem to be adverse to looking at Hauwei...(Chinese spies - so say the 2 dozen kids I speak to and they've all said it independently).

I too have an XZ1 Compact. I'm not changing it because nothing currently available looks like it would do a better job. The Pixel 3a comes closest but the lack of SD slot rules it out.

I'm XZ1 user. I'm struggling to see why I would change. The combination of small size, waterproof and dust proof, fast and smooth is somewhat unbeatable without spending daft money.

Aye but it has more capacity than what I'm using in the XZ1 so isn't too bad...I'm concerned about age of device as well...Sony do a xz2 compact but not available on my network (which I'm happy with so not looking to move). The Xperia 5 looks good but is a larger phone...I like the fact my thumb can do everything in this size...suspect more than 5.2" and I'll not be able to do 1 thumb stuff.

You might want to look at the CAT S52. I replaced my Sony xz1 compact with this bombproof phone. There not badly priced for a military grade phone.

That looks OK, camera not as good but everything else looks rather good. The S61 appears to have improvements as well (but is bigger).

Thanks for that link, add that to my very small list...pixel 4 is there but battery suggests it'll be poor and need charged daily.

What do you think you need a load of space for? I got a 128gb phone this time and tbh I should have saved the money as 64 would be enough. Everything is in the cloud these days, unless you want to save all your own music on it.

save all your own music on it.

This. I don't have a streaming music subscription, because I have 800 ripped CDs

Samsung S7 here for 4 years, been brilliant, still no plan to change it.

When it eventually dies, I'll go honor or huawei for sure.

I replaced my Samsung S7 Edge with a Huawei Mate 10 Pro. It's been great and I'd buy another (or latest equivalent) that came with the Play store installed. It's understandable to be wary, not because of the spy threat but the trade war implications of not running Android. Also worth looking at Xiaomi and Oppo for High-specs at reasonable prices.

You don't have to suspect, reviewers pay great attention to this. It's not necessarily going to be worse in battery than your current phone because the phone is likely to be more energy efficient despite being bigger.

I have the XZ2 Compact, bought because I don't like carrying larger phones. Faultless. I bought it outright and use with a SIM only contract on BT/EE.

Unsure there is much difference between XZ1 Compact and xz2 compact.

What will make it more efficient? It has a larger screen running at a higher 'thing' - 90 instead of 60. Also has more sensors on it.

I get 2 solid days out the XZ1 Compact, so I'd expect the next one to do that as a minimum as the XZ1 is almost 3 years old now.

I found the XZ1 was regularly running out of memory. Maybe I just use too many apps. The XZ2 is certainly faster, has more storage and has more up-to-date versions of Android.

No earphone socket, if that's a thing for you. There's an adapter cable or just go Bluetooth.

Still has the separate Camera button which I find really useful at this time of year particularly as it's easy to operate with gloved hands.

Pixel phones are great as long as you don't mind being a beta tester for the first year of ownership and don't need it to work for the second. On the plus side the warranty department is slick...

S10e is very hard to beat for price v features and battery makes it through 2 days for me.

Sounds like an authoritative source of information.

Of course they all get their information from the same rumour mill so it could be 24 or 240 wouldn't make any difference 🙂

Honor 8X. Paid £165 new 6 months ago. Makes phones at £800 look silly. Massive screen, huge battery life, NFT, 2 sims so I have my work SIM in there instead of second phone, can add xd memory card in a third slot. Has been faultless.

Gotta be said that those Samsung s9 & s10 models look mega decent

Battery life i know lasts literally days on s9 that a friend has

I now have a Iphone 7 plus and although takes ages to charge, battery life lasts longer to deplete than standard size iphone 7

If I liked android then Samsung s9 or s10 would get my money
However if on a budget then I would choose elsewhere brands wise

Just anything other than Motorola judging by family’s handsets of past

Huwaei or whatever it is called has an amazing camera well my brother’s one does it is UNREAL!

Had my OnePlus 5T for 18 months and really happy with it. Fast, good camera and an Android skin that's a genuine improvement on stock. Not planning on replacing it any time soon, but will definitely look at OnePlus again when I do.

Worth checking out fast chargers from Anker or Belkin, 18w ones like those sold with the iP11 Pro and Pro Max charge much quicker.

Starting to sway towards the Sony Xperia 5...the new 'compact' phone from Sony.

Not really compact but seems to have the best run time. Samsung look ok but they are full of bloatware that you can't remove - had a Samsung previously and I found I installed apps as the Samsung stuffing really do it for me.

Google Pixel 4 would be excellent but really poor battery life (compared to other phones). Charging annoys me if it is daily as I can't get a weekend away from civilisation if I need to recharge daily.

Anyway, upgrade day tomorrow so will see what is offered before I consider buying a phone separately.

Thanks for the tips, all good. The OnePlus phones from John Lewis appear to have 300 quid cashback for trading an old phone in, which sounds superb.

I was a Sony owner (for being compact and good camera) for many years and went to a Pixel this year, mostly for the camera and because Xperias always seemed to draw some negative comments - which I shouldn't have focused on. I'll go back to an Xperia compact as soon as I need to - great phones. Pixel is good but actually feels too tied to Google in some ways, and a couple of really small things that just didn't happen with Sonys - I never had a complaint with them.

Haha, aye...doesn't happen often but when it does it works, so having had a phone that does that for last 7 years, I don't want to go back. Got mates who seem to live with a charge point at arms length and it just doesn't work for me.

I've had several different android phones over the years, with the current being a Huawei Pro 20. It was a great phone. But now it is so buggy it's almost unusable, crashes daily at least once, normally whilst writing an email that it deletes. 2 weeks ago it crashed and deleted my entire text message history, causing my no end of problems with my customers.
The Sony z's were the best, but very fragile, just one drop on the floor and the front glass would smash rendering it useless.

I'm going back to an IPhone, they are more expensive, not that much though now it seems, but they just work without any dicking about, even after being dropped and having a cracked screen.
