Time for a new phone contract and looking at getting something reasonably decent like a s10.
Companies like fonehouse seem way way cheaper than directly from the like of three mobile. For example the aforementioned phone is 31 quid a month with no up front costs and 100 gbs of data, compared to the same cost with 2gb of data direct or via likes of carphone warehouse. So what's the catch?
So what’s the catch?
The length of time your paying the £31 for will equate to the cost of the phone and the contract to which you are tied to for that period.
3 used to tariff match... Worth a call to their sales team
I'll never tie myself in to another lengthy contract. I pay 8 quid a month on Giffgaff.
It's the first time I've bought a phone outright which was a bit of a stinger. I'm not a gadget fiend so a middle of the range Samsung does the job.
Now I can change my monthly cost up or down depending how much data I need or just end or have a break whenever I want.

I'm more than happy with a contract, have one at the moment. It's 30 quid a month with 2 gb of data.
But to upgrade to 100gb of data would cost me 20 quid extra a month. So basically how come I am getting such a good deal on data from these online folks?
Attaching your phone to your phone contract is a mugs game.
Giffgaff sim card and port you number.
Buy a phone outright

Because you are currently getting a shite deal.

Is it?
Cheapest I can find a s10 sim free is 400 quid. Giff gaff with similar data is 20/month. So that option is actually considerably more expensive than the deal im looking at over 24 months.
Are you sure it's 24 months? I'm in the market for a new phone and a lot of the headline prices are for 36 month contracts but don't make it immediately obvious that is the case.
I wrote a longer post and lost it.
I was actually referring to you current pricing making a much cheaper option possible.
Don't get dazzled by data though its one of these things where a cheaper lower data quantity will still be cheaper than more data you don't use.
I've gone over 10gb about twice after forgetting to turn wifi on or a month of watching netflix on commutes.
And other months i have dropped it to 5 if i knew i wouldn't be heavy public transporting
My choice a few months ago:
S10e SIM free - £369. GigGaf or similar £8 a month 4gb data and unlimited calls = £561
S10e with unlimited minutes and text 6gb data = free plus £19 a month after a discount = £456
I'm back on a contract.
S10e SIM free – £369 For me, £10pm Smarty unlimited calls, texts and 30gb data. That’s £609 / 24 or £25.30 a month. Then gets cheaper after 2 years assuming I keep it that long. Your contract would be £22.37 month with a £7 sim from smarty.
I'm probably not on the cheapest deal but have an unlimited calls / texts/ data deal with 3 mobile for £40 a month, which i got a year ago. The unlimited data is great for iplayer use when away
I’ve been looking at iPhone deals and it seems the main players are taking the piss. What o2, Vodafone, EE,etc charge £50pm+ for Sky Mobile or Tesco will give you for £30-35.
Look at Miney Saving Expert for a quick look at the best deals available. I’m now on an iPhone 11 with 25gbs pcm for 24 months. £42 up front and £29 pcm. Winner 💪🏻 That was from affordable mobile on EE’s network. However, to EE I am just a new customer for them so get all the perks they offer on their normal contracts.
I was with Giffgaff for years but eneded up getting a P20pro last year on contract as it was cheaper.
I did all the sums and going through Topcashback and Mobile phones direct and remembering to do their cashback claims it worked out at around £26-27 per month on EE. Would have been £32ish with buying handset and Giffgaff.
Look around I'd say.
Same as sharkattack i WAS paying £8 pm for a giffgaff sim but when the phone gave up the ghost I after looking around decided I needed to buy a phone! So giffgaff do refurbished models so got an iPhone 8 128GB for £16pm over 2 years I think, then with the £8 pm for sim I’m paying £24 pm with what feels like a new phone and great sim.
Be careful of how good the Sky Mobile deals look.
They are what is called Swap24 - essentially a 36 month loan deal with the chance to swap phones after 24 months.
You would not own the phone after 24 months, but can send the phone back & start a new Sky Mobile contract at this point.
If you want to own the phone you need to complete the entire 36 month contract.

Yes, I was going to say this. Consumers have got wise to companies pricing based on a 36 month contract, and have instead started trying to leverage the presumptive value of your old phone against the cost of the contract.
I also recommend checking out the money saving expert website. I got an iPhone on contract that was cheaper than my old android and the process was so slick. I went with affordable mobiles on ee 50gb data and £32 a month I also had a code to waive the upfront charge. Ordered on the Monday night delivered on the Wednesday morning and number ported over by the Thursday. So far I’m happy with what I’ve got.
Tesco will give you for £30-35.
Constant Tesco Mobile adverts on the radio, making out it's a good price and then slipping in that it's 36 months at the end.
Also advertising out of date iPhones as 'incredible savings' - if you consider a quid a week for 3 years an incredible saving for old tech.
I went with mobile phones direct last time. Worked out significantly better after cashback to take a new handset on contract than the equivalent sim only deal from anyone with no handset.
I got 2 Vodafone SIMs from Fonehouse that are great value if you remember to do the cashback claims. Calendar reminders & a straight forward online process means I’d buy again.
Just renewed my Three sim only - unlimited everything £17/month - renewed for 24 months at that price
This morning I have just negotiated an upgrade deal with EE :-
Samsung Galaxy S20 5G
24 months
Unlimited texts/calls
10Gb data (+ 3Gb bonus)
£27 / month & no upfront cost for phone
Could have taken 40Gb data for £29 / month - I wouldn't be able to achieve this monthly cost if buying a phone separately & going sim only.
EE originally offered same deal at £33 when I requested a PAC code, but got to speak to Retention Dept. today & they knocked £6 off per month.
When I stopped having company phones I just got a SIM-only deal with 3-Mobile (mainly as my OH use to work for them).
In the end all five of us were on 3-Mobile contracts, and eventually all SIM-only.
£15pcm - all you can eat.
I bought my current iPhone 5S a couple of years ago for £300, should get a couple more years out of it.
