Saw the trailer yesterday and read a bit about it, apparently Gibson was approached but outright turned down the role, half way through filming changed his mind but obviously too late. I think Hardy should do it justice.

as with most remakes/sequels/prequels, I want it to be good but I don't think it will be.

George Miller has been trying to do a fourth for over 20 years now, finally got one going which seems to be another story between 1 and 2. Least the original director is behind it and with a big budget a mix of real time and CGI effects it may prove to be a good old fashioned action film or it might just fall on it's arse.

Looks ace. I hope it is as good as the trailer predicts.

Read about it on Wikipedia. Apparently they were filming it near Broken Hill, NSW, where some of the previous films were made, but had to relocate to Namibia due to torrential rain causing an eruption of wild flowers, making the desert look far too pretty!

The buzz from Comic Con is very positive, apparently the film is essentially one long chase (again) and the scale of some of the set pieces is a lot larger.

It's been on my radar for a while, Miller is being given the time (principal photography finished about two years ago) and money to do what he wants.

I know it's only a trailer, but am I the only one that thinks that that looks like glossy shit in comparison to
these two?

With an additional 25 years of film-making technology, you'd hope it would be produced to modern standards...

Damn.. now this I am looking forward to. I remember my dad sitting me down to watch this and Terminator when I was about 15/16 - proper film education 🙂

I agree with Vinnyeh.

The 3rd movie was over produced balls and this looks no better.

Waterworld anyone?

3rd went for the bizarre theatrical theme, this is back to the raw of car chases and explosions. But yes it could be a disaster.

I thought it was supposed to be between 1 & 2. But in the trailer it looks like the Interceptor gets written off, and he still has it in 2?

Can't wait, although could be the death knell for tom hardys career, meaning he'll be doing massive blockbuster from now on...

Yeah, well, considering you can shoot an HD movie with a DSLR and edit on a laptop these days, which will give results at least as good as the first MM movie, while the new one will probably be shot in 4k on RED cameras, I'd bloody well hope it looks glossier, otherwise all that tech is really going to waste!
Or should they have shot it all on Super 8?

I think it should be good, looks styled similarly to the first 2. The shame is the leading ladies, Charlize Theron and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Charlize maybe, but Rosie is only in it for the pouts across the desert. I would have picked Maggie Gyllenhaal.

As it went on the crashes/explosions got a bit too mad for me- carnado! I love mad max 2 but it had a brilliant real world solid thump to it and this one, not so much, it's a bit too fast and furious, everything seems to be made of CGI and dynamite.

But still, excited. Tom Hardy could be just the man.

Didn't need doing IMHO but might be OK as it seems close to the feel of the 2nd one which was the best by miles. Frankly 1 is really dated and a bit dull and 3 was a joke.

A fella, a quick fella, might have a weapon under there. I'd have to pin his head to the panel...

Shame he's not in it.

It's a shame they've fallen into the trap of using loads of CGI and way ott action.
The great thing about Mad Max films was the real driving and crazy stunts!

I don't mind CGI being used to create things that don't exist, but it's unconvincing as an easy way to do big action scenes.

With the amount of money they are spending It looks like they are trying to create an entirely new action movie franchise. I'd say they are trying to develop an individual look to differentiate it.

Mad Max was such a hugely influential film in terms of post apocalypse/future dystopian look and it's action sequences that it's been rehashed a thousand times over. I don't like cgi in car stunts particularly but at least this looks visually strong and distinct. Hopefully they can use it to supplement physical stunts, not replace them. The vast majority of the trailer looks to be using physical effects, with only the last few seconds (presumably from a big set piece) being cgi heavy.

Couldn't agree more. Most of the time big CGI set pieces look so fake that they're just boring to watch no matter how spectacular they're supposed to be - and what's the point in a boring action film?

ButtHurt
An inappropriately strong negative emotional response from a perceived personal insult. Characterized by strong feelings of shame. Frequently associated with a cessation of communication and overt hostility towards the "aggressor."

Acting NEVER came into how cool the first MAD MAX films were.

This new one will be shit but probably quite pretty and ultimately harmless since Thunderdome ruined MAD MAX already.

I hated Thunderdome when I first watched it, but I watched it again just recently and loved it. Absolutely cracked, mind, and maybe works better if you forget it's a mad max film but still.

Thought Gibson's performances in the first 2 were perfect though... Kind of like Matt Damon in the Bourne films, the script said he had to look concussed and confused and he delivered.

Yeah.. as a stand alone hollywood action movie thunderdome ticks all the boxes as will this new one no doubt.

Thunderdome just isn't really in the same genre as the first two MAD MAX films. that's all.

saw it last night

2 hours in total - about 1:45 of that involves cars being blown up

Basic plot is

Max gets caught
Charlize does a runner in a tanker
Car chase
Car chase
Chat
Car chase
Car chase
Where are we going to go
Car chase
Car chase
oh we've got to our destination
Credits

all in all it's pretty ace

This is good cinema. Visceral, exciting and a great update to this sort of genre. Bay should watch this and take lessons in the craft of directing , editing and cinematography.

Surprisingly engaging plot which unravels to serve a satisfying climax. Wasn't expecting how it was all going to pan out - especially as the masterstroke is to start in full on confusion.

Minor criticisms; some of the grading and compositing ( in terms of scenery) was so bonkers and a little unconvincing I started to yearn for a more naturalistic and consistent tone.

But as a whole to keep everything rattling along of what is effectively a chase film, this is very impressive as are the few quiet moments.

It's also nice for once to know an update , reboot or sequel at least delivers despite the hype. You just need the talent.

The bloke from Empire magazine was very enthusiastic about it on 6Music this morning, and generally speaking, if he likes a film, I know I will, the caveat being it has to be a subject I'm actually interested in seeing.
This film was supposed to be made years ago, but 9/11, and the financial climate stopped it, so the director went and made a penguin movie instead! (Happy Feet). 😯
As far as CGI goes, it's pretty much all physical shots, things really fall down, go 'BOOM!', it's completely nuts, and looks like an outstanding amount of fun!
Looking forward to using my Meerkat Movies code in the near future. 😀
