My current laptop is 7-8ish years old and slowly dying. My plan for the next couple of months is to keep an eye out for deals to get a new one.

Question is - what's good value point these days? Not bought a computer for a while so out of touch.

Mainly used for general web browsing but if it can handle rendering 4k gopro footage (this one cant, only *just* manages 1080p) then it would be grand & Preferably powered via USB C for use on the boat too.

If the 4k film requirement puts the spec into the stratosphere, then happy to drop it to handling 1080p...

Can't point to specifics, but I'd be looking at whatever AMD 4000 series based laptop is in your price range. They crush the Intel equivalents at lower power envelopes in the likes of Cinebench so are really a no-brainer.

I'm not sure whether the software you use does GPU acceleration but would expect so, so something with a discrete graphics card would be beneficial but pushes the price up.

This looks pretty good, assuming you want a smaller laptop. If I was buying one tomorrow it's probably what I'd buy. Apart from the half height enter key possibly.

a chromebook? If all you're doing is being online....it's all you need

Chromebook will not render video. I have a Chromebook. It's good for 2 things. Battery life and web browsing. If you want to do anything else it's a pain. The file management is rubbish.

MacBook air/pro fulfils your requirements including USBC.

Dell XPS uses USBC. I've got one with an 8th gen i7. Really like it. Nicely made.

Asus Zephyrus g14 would be my choice when buying now.

I have a "BMAX" laptop
It was ded cheap and seems pretty good (keyboard lighting is patchy but otherwise ...)

Then again, if you push me on the subject I'll admit that I don't really know what video "rendering" is 🤣

The 3000 series AMD CPUs in some of those are not in the same league as the new 4000 series. For a few hundred more you could get a Lenovo Legion 5 with 4000 series and it'll be twice as fast in quite a number of intensive tasks.

I can't see past a Dell XPS at the moment - £2.5k for an i7 17" though

Do you really need a laptop?

A custom built PC will have far better thermal regulation, better graphics cards, and a much wider range of parts you can select.

Laptops are generally rubbish for doing intensive work on, as the heat management turns the CPU and GPU into throttling mode when it gets too hot.

You can build something decent for less than a grand with fast memory, NVM SSD, a decent GeForce of 57x series AMD.

I'd be looking at a Ryzen 9, 64GB ram, 1TB NVM SSD, AMD 5700+ from Sapphire and a liquid cooled CPU.
