I've managed to avoid a being issued with a Blackberry until now cos half the time I reckon it just encourages/allows you to be 'at work' 24/7 which isn't healthy.

But with my new job I'll be travelling a fair bit and things are fast moving so actually I think it will be a useful tool for keeping up to date and in touch with my boss/colleagues.

I've been offered one but cos I'm a Blackberry virgin I have no idea which one will be best. For me it needs to work as a phone, synch to Outlook and have a decent browser.

Any ideas?

dont get a storm 1. its terrible dont know if the 2 is much better, but i think they only added wifi to it. my storm always freezes, sometimes in calls and sometimes i cant hear the other person very well and have to reboot it - which takes about 3 minutes (not long unless you really need to call someone back!)

I have the Bold 9700, mine has a few issues with connectivity but I like it otherwise and that problem is probably due to the network rather than the phone!

Yep, most Blackberry-using orgs I find will have a standard issue model and that's what you'll get.

To retain some hold on your sanity, you can set them to stop having mail pushed to them outside of work hours - the phone bit keeps working so if someone calls they'll get through, but you won't have it telling you about all the new emails that you should be reading.

you can switch e-mails off and leave it as a phone easily. wisely done.

I have the storm 2 I've updated the OS to Vodafone Spain = 5.0.0.713, not an update agreed by VFUK.......yet! It has made a world of difference to the phone, much more stable and faster.

Mini opera browser is good, It's also great to use as modem for netbook on the move (doing so now) Syncing with outlook is a doddle.

Crackberrys is a good place to lurk to find out about BB's tho can be a bit geeky at times.

The blackberrys are good for the email side of things agreed.

One thing you mention is that you'll be travelling a lot. Are you also going to be expecting the phone to occupy some of your time outwith work whilst on a trip. By that I mean listening to music and watching movies or the odd little game on it ?

If so, then something like the storm with the bigger screen wouldn't go a miss. I noticed a huge difference in the reduction of screen size when watching movies on the Bold 9700 after coming from an iphone.

Another aspect may be how big are your fingers? Mine are quite large and I struggled with the Bold 9700's keys being just a shade too small. I found the older 8900 keys better ( but that phone is an older one now ). I found that the touchscreen on the Storm was easier in terms of input due to the screen effectively having larger buttons compared to the Bold 9700.

I use googlmail for my email and google calendar syncs with the BB calendar too. Mini opera browser is pretty good though is a little slow to scroll, takes some getting used to.

Bruneep, how do you use it as a modem?

[Hijack] Thanks for that, just one more question - is browsing this way taken as your inclusive data allowance?

yes, I've never had an issue with it (amount of MB used) for general browsing. Just don't try to download the top ten DVD's
