My trusty Berghaus has decided to start to expire after 8 years of loyal service - zip deciding not to work.

Not sure what model it is (looks like the RX1 but insulated) and can't seem to find the equivalent.

It's still waterproof and not looking too shabby.

So what do the STW collective recommend?

Don't need one with removable fleece or anything (have a Berghaus Spectrum for that) and don't want just a mesh lined shell type - have couple of those.

Looking ideally at less than £100.

Saami Jacket

I've been using this for the last 2.5 years as my main ski jacket/work coat. Marginally over your budget, but a great jacket

There are people around who can replace zips, probably cost around £40-50, so much cheaper than replacing the jacket. Unless, of course, you absolutely feel that you must buy a new jacket... 😉

Avoid anytjing by North Face that' less than I'd say at least a 100 quid. They're more fashion items now and the coat I bought is pretty shit with it wetting out within 3 months of purchase. My 5 yr old previous Lowe alpine was 10 times better and I've gone back to wearing it on dog walks even tho it' got a couple if small splits in it.

Depending on why the zip's 'decided not to work', if it's a slider that's broken or no longer zips the teeth together, you may be able to fix it yourself. My trusty and battered Patagonia Stretch Speed Ascent has had something like five replacement zip-sliders fitted over the years - with care you can fit them easily enough and it's lot cheaper than getting a whole new zip sewn in.

If you do want to buy a new jacket, you can do a lot worse than a look at what's on Sport Pursuit - half-price Arc'teryx is worth a punt, ditto Berghaus, Marmot, etc.

Thanks All.

Might look in to getting it repaired - but a nice new jacket is always nice too!

Zip started playing up today - zips up fine, just difficult to get down, nearly had to take it off over my head this morning when I got to the office lol

Agree with the North Face - had one about 10 years ago that was brilliant, until some git nicked it from my car. Newer stuff isn't that good.

Will also look on SP - never had much luck though getting the bargains.

Have a close look at the backing material of the zip, where it forms a sort of inner baffle, it might have worn or creased in one place, causing it to catch in the slider, or a tooth or two may have deformed. If it’s the material, then you might be able to carefully cut that bit out, if it’s the teeth, then a new zip may well be needed.

Of course, a new jacket is nice... 😄

Although only medium and a big variety of sizes within that, just got a bundle of jackets to send back as they don't fit.....
