I’m looking for a new iPad, I currently have an original Air version and think it’s time for an upgrade as Zwift etc don’t work on this.

my options are the 10.5 Pro (I don’t want to fork out for the latest one) or the 9.7 iPad.

The iPad is the later model.

Main use is, web, email, Wattbike and 3rd party apps, face book etc.

Which one is ‘better’ and going to be the best upgrade to my current Air?

A guy at work rocked up with the brand new Pro and what a piece of kit. Absolutely brilliant, but alot of cash and hard to justify over a bog standard iPad unless you're really going to use its power and more advanced capabilities. I think for your purposes a bog standard iPad will do just fine. For me the Pro is really to be considered as an alternative to a MacBook or other high end, high spec laptop rather than an iPad. I've asked my boss if I can ditch my laptop in favour of an iPad Pro....he's not said no...yet. I suspect he will in the end.

Thanks mate.

Its the 2017 Pro I’m considering rather than the 2018 Pro.

I have a 2017 pro - but to be honest, wish I'd gone for the regular iPad and saved a pile of money.

As far as I can tell it's pretty much the same processor (as much as I use it). Pro can do the fancier keyboard and (at the time) was the only one to use the pencil. I just use a normal bluetooth keyboard with mine when I want to type more and you can do that with any iPad. Never did get a pencil for mine - and the current iPad works with it anyway.

'17 Pro has a better screen than the regular iPad but again, not sure it's worth the premium.

The new '18 Pro appears to be a big step up in terms of performance. But, a lot of money if you're not using it to its full.

When you've got the pro there's only one way, it's a state of mind!

I have the 10.5 2017 Pro, it replaced a 1st gen iPad Air - for what I use it for it's not noticeably quicker at anything really. I just use it for email, web, games and watching Twitch - the difference might be more obvious if running demanding apps on it I guess. I was going to change to the new iPad Pro but after having a play in the shop I just can't see the point for what I do (and at £919 it's getting into silly money, although I could get £300 for my old one).

I have a 2017 iPad pro 12.9". Totally overpriced but if you want a big screen there is no choice.

If I was happy with a 9.7" screen, for what I do which is email, internet and streaming videos, I'd definitely get the standard over the pro and save the money.

i'd wait a bit currys and amazon have some ipad deals on , but i tend to buy from Very.co.uk when they have the cashback offers on 10%-20%.. its usually bnpl 12 months interest free, (catch) but if you havent paid it off at the end they add back on all interest applicable over the year..

Standard iPad will do, John Lewis have an offer on at £299.

https://www.johnlewis.com/2018-apple-ipad-9-7-inch-a10-ios-11-wi-fi-32gb/p2999393

im using the older 9.7 iPad Pro and it’s works fine, I can’t see any reason to change it and I just use it for the usual stuff.

I might get a new standard one next year if they put Face ID on them but won’t be getting the pro.

I bought an iPad from the Apple refurb site and there's no way you'd know it hadn't come straight out of the factory.

Having the exact same debate.

The conclusion I've come to is that unless you're going to use the pro as a tool for the pro features, or the £250-£300 extra for the 2017 Pro means nothing to you then the iPad 2018 is the way to go.

The 2018 pros are proper amazing though.

This for me, just bought an Apple Pencil and am using it with MyScript Nebo for notes, very good.

FYI:  Apple pencil works with 2018 ipad although the 120Hz display and laminated screen make the experience much better on a pro.

At the other end of the field - a Huion Kamvas 19.5 is around £400.  Portability isn't so good 🤣 but it does come with a flash stand

If size and multi-platform compatibility are key then have a look at the 221 Pro?

I bought a Pro when I was rich, so musta been 2 years ago (redundancy pay burning a hole etc.) so... this: im using the older 9.7 iPad Pro and it’s works fine, I can’t see any reason to change it and I just use it for the usual stuff.

What are the pro apps/features people are talking about? New pro looks great but a friend of mine said you still can't really sketch in PS so he's sticking with his Wacom. What other pro features are there?

Slso does the normal iPad only work with the old pencil?

Another point is unless you buy the top of the range pro it only comes with 4gb of ram, isn't this incredibly underpowered or is this offset by all the apps being designed specifically for the iPad.

Just pushed the button, on a 2018 iPad but not before remembering I had £70ish quid left on an old JL gift card.  First new apple product I've ever bought.

Any case recommends?

for the case look at amazon and then look for the 5/5 review ratings with the highest count usually around £8-12

think i got an ESR one last time, pretty sure they are all the same

I don't think toe 2017 10.5 pro has much of an advantage over the 2018 base model, both use the A10 processor, the pro sports an X but I expect the 10.5 pro will be less capable than the 2019 A11 base model

I made the mistake in the apple shop of mentioning to the girlfriend that the magnetic connector on the pro was nice so you can put it on a stand to charge rather than having to plug a cable in whenever it needed a charge, like my old Nexus 10.

So she bought me one as an early xmas pressie so I could load it up with books and movies ready for a pre-xmas cruise!

And just before the 2018 one came out as well!

Seems quick - sort of glad that I have a home button as well

Nah the "X" makes all the difference, bigger chip, more cores, maybe faster clock speed.  The A12x Bionic in the new iPad pros has insane benchmarks

I found a Devicewear Ridge case to be sturdy, nice feel to it and well-made.  Quite unobtrusve and nicely functional and the magnetic close/sleep function is good.

Thanks to all for the input.

looking side by side to my eyes the clarity of the display on the Pro appears crisper. This may seal it for me.

Had a look at the new iPad in store yesterday, it really does come across as something that could replace a laptop, although it's very expensive and you can't spec the RAM. I think the 11 inch is the pick of the sizes. Plus you don't have to buy the pencil and case up front.

I was going to replace my ancient iPad3 with a new standard and affordable "iPad"… but I made the mistake of picking up and playing with the new small bezel 12.9 Pro… oh my… I will now be delaying a year or two and waiting for that kind of thing to become less insanely expensive… it's what tablets will have to morph into soon, and fast, it's so obviously right… not too big, not to heavy, but with an amazing display that makes my current toy look prehistoric.

I've just bought an 11" pro with keyboard after loosing my iPad 2 a year or so ago, been using an Nvidia Shield that I never really got on with.

The iPad is great so far, not keen on going from keyboard to touch scree, as years of laptop use have me looking for the mouse, and folded back on itself, the keyboard cover feels wrong.

However, for day to day work stuff, emails etc its great, nice being able to type properly, rather than working off a screen, online meetings on MS Teams / Skype is really good and the screen is beautiful and clear.   Hoping to start to tax it a little bit now and see what I can do with it and leave my laptop at home.

I looked at the new iPad Pro too, but my old laptop died and I need full functionality in a computer, so have ended up with a Microsoft surface Pro 6, I’ve got an air 2 and the Surface blows it away for being able to use as a tablet and attach the keyboard and away I go.

I don't think you understand how Apple's pricing works, they'll be £1.5-2k in a couple of years time...
