You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi, after lots of googling the most recent thread I can find is 4 years old. Apologies if there was one last week.
Anyway, I’m after a home printer that is not a passive aggressive bastard. One that prints wirelessly without the need to go over and press a button. Preferably one with ink that lasts ages, and can actually print reasonably well. For home/ college stuff, not massive amounts.
Thanks
hp printer on instant ink plan
If you want it to last ages and be good to go when you need it then go for laser. Well worth the initial higher price IMO.
Hp with plan as above.
Mine gets left for months on end and always springs into action with no gumming.
Set was easy, wifi worked instantly and have printed huge amounts of uni stuff.
It was 35pounds.
Depends what you want it for. If photo printing then you’re more or less stuck with an inkjet of some kind.
if it is more for documents and the like then consider a laser printer. My £50 dell color laser printer died after several years sterling service. I replaced it with a Brother color printer that does 2-sided printing, connects wirelessly, does ‘AirPrint’, and just sits there eager to do more printing. HL-3270CDW or something.
toner cartridges seem to last for ages.
I have a 3-in-1 inkjet I got for photo printing but got fed up of finding that its ink had disappeared between occasional prints: easier to just order online or from the nearby photo processor shop. It now acts as a scanner only.
We got a cheap hp black and white laser printer just before lockdown. Has been great and hasn't missed a beat. The toner which came with it lasted a while and a replacement was £40 and shows no sign of use despite printing a couple of reams of schoolwork. Much better than an ink jet.
Edit: HP m15w I think.

I did the same (I don't print that often and used to do my printing at work!) but obviously only good if you don't need colour (HP107W). Works well but surprised at cost of toner cartridges when I need to buy one but they last 1,000 pages.
Branded toner cartridges are expensive but I've always used cheap copies. No issues. I think I paid £26 for 4 colour cartridges. That'll last me at least a year.
Watching with interest, giving up on my "highly rated" Canon printer as it seems to take endless turn on/off/reset to ever get it to print.
Once it's on and working it's fine, but I like to turn it off when not in use rather than burning through electricity and every time it is turned back on it takes forever to connect and print, and using the admin features feels like I'm using something that hasn't been updated since Windows 95 was around.
+1 for laser and unbranded cartridges. Again i just have a basic B&W one but its been faultless for about 7-8yrs.
Another vote for hp printer on instant ink plan nothing else makes sense for an occasional home user IMO and you never run out of ink as the cartridges are sent out automatically when you are running low.
It was 35pounds.
And even at that price it comes with three months free Instant Ink subscription.
To echo many. Hp with instant ink.
I bought a 5030, was circa £100 came with ink and 3 months free insta ink sub.
I pay £3 per month and like magic, ink arrives in the post when its running low.
It has a good scanner, prints from my phone, laptop and alexa. Lives in the office upstairs and we can print from anywhere in the house.
Been brill during lockdown.
I hate printers and before I got the latest one I moaned that technology in everything had moved on but printers seemed 20 years behind. If you don't need colour, the HP Neverstops are really good. First printer I've had that from switched off will be to ready to print in about 20 seconds. With the way they do the ink, the price per page is really low as well. Definitely the best printer I've owned.
There was a thread not too long ago and the OP ended up buying my reccomendation - HP Office Jet Pro 9019, with £80 cashback from PC World and a years instant ink. I'll see if I can find the thread
a timely thread.
I've spent about £100 on ink cartridges this year for my old canon MP490. a lot of it is a one-off project for the missus' childminding business, but i can still see more printing being done a home now, so a new solution is needed.
I like the idea of laser, but the HP install and forget thing is tempting!
I've been pissed off with HP's predatory pricing for long enough that when our old inkjet ran out of ink I bought a Lexmark colour laser (C2425) instead. They're obviously bigger but a lot faster to print and none of this spending five minutes cleaning heads before starting if it hasn't been used for a while.
Cheers all, I thought there was a recent thread.
Weird google didn’t spot it.

TBH lasers are pretty much install and forget. When mine get low on toner, which is about once a year, maybe two years, I get a low toner warning and about another month of use while I buy a replacement. You have to be pretty slack to run out. I must admit I am not a fan of contracts and subscription models though.
What works best with Macs? We've had some rubbish printers so far. Poor quality printing with bands through each print. We only use occasionally and ink cartridges drying and having to clean print heads is a PIA.
We've got a Samsung colour laser on our mac. Works fine, every time.
But the Mrs needed to print on some magnetic paper & it didn't like it. She's now got an Epson ET-1110 inkjet which comes with 4 65mL bottles of ink. No dinky little cartridges.
@iechydda and the OP
Another vote for HP Instant Ink.
Bought to do WFH and Lock down school work and has been brill.
Prints without fuss from my works Dell, personal Macbook, Daughter's chromebook and my android phone.
The ink arrives in the post well in advance of the cartridge running out.
