So I took my 1.6hdi Berlingo in for it's MOT which it passed fine, then driving it home 5th gear stopped working and a quick google search suggests it's dead.

So any very rough ideas on how much? I'll be speaking to the garage tomorrow am but would like to have an idea before hand to see what funds I have..

Got my gear box fixed, 2 gears and a new clutch and it was £700 all in. After a bit of research this was about the right price (not at a dealer)

I put a 2nd hand box in my 406 cost 40quid.

Garage costing with a clutch 700-850 I'd say

Even cheaper if you take it to a pure gearbox specialists in my experience......just check the linkages are okay before you commit to a garage repair just in case there's a separate actuating linkage for 5th.....I have no knowledge of this specific gearbox by the way but when my gear linage on my van began to fail I lost fifth first then 2nd and fourth I think it was.....then the linkage fell off and I lost them all 😆

Thats where i was heading berlingos have stupid plastic jointed linkages what wear,

Had mine changed to the metal ones from dealer when i had my clutch done. Much crisper shift.

Cheers for the suggestions there, pretty sure it's internal, the actuator moves fine and when I manage to get 5th in it makes a pretty bad grindy noise. Obviously if it can be repaired cheap I'll do it!

Pop the end cover off and make sure the nut hadn't come lose allowing fifth to float about, seen on a few Fiat's.

If you are in leeds and are capable of removing the gearbox yourself. Take it here. Best gearbox specialist in Leeds area if you are local http://www.192.com/atoz/business/leeds-ls12/gear-boxes-for-motor-vehicles/stephen-brear-gearboxes-ltd/2835f7a6e86c4764dedbcd84549c889bd2eddfea/ml/

So I do need a new one. It's a 20dp25 which is proving hard to get hold of. Anyone know which other boxes would fit? 1.6hdi 16v 90bhp 56 plate berlingo. Pretty sure it's a 9hx engine

Back 10 years ago used to use a Gearbox recon guy to build boxes for some old Golf Racecars some friends of mine ran, I seem to recall the cost was around £500, which included installing a race diff at times, these were 20 year old plus gearboxes too so they were usually fairly shagged by then.

I'd imagine that would be cheaper than a brand new one, plus you know it'll fit perfectly. Usually they know the common faults and have uprated parts to avoid them happening again - the synchromesh was a weak spot in MK1 Golf Gearboxes, but never on the recon ones.
