Just recently purchased an Edge 800, and have enjoyed playing around with it, but now I've come to download some routes for it, and I seem to be stuck...
Going on advice, I've been searching for .gpx files. This led me to www.cycle-route.com and ive come across a few rides i like the look of, but when i download them, they come up as a .xml file, and this is where i get stuck. i dont know what to do with it 🙁
Any help on what to do next would be much appriciated.
Thank yooooou

Don't quote me on this but I -think- you can just rename them.
Might be worth trying a different a browser too, just in case it's IE being weird.
GPS Babel is your friend.
GPX is a form of XML file and you should be able to change the extension quite easy using a website such as gpsies.com or just search Google for xml to GPX conversions
you can check the content of the file using notepad (right click and select 'open with > notepad')
you should be able to change the extension quite easy using a website such as gpsies.com or just search Google for xml to GPX conversions
Or right-click / rename, or press F2. (You need 'show extensions' enabled in Explorer though.)
The online converter at GPSies.com ia very useful for switching between formats:
http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do
If you post the first 10 lines from the XML file we should be able to tell you what format it is.
Ok, update... Ive managed to find the 2 files I had downloaded thinking they were .XML files, and it would seem they are .gpx files after all. Now, I've tried to load them into basecamp, but I get an error message each time saying an unknown error has occured 🙁
I just want to go out on a nice ride! Does any one know of any sort of tutorial fortune bloody thing?!
Cheers

dont use that website is all i can say, i tried to get a couple off there to load into memory map and it wont, not even an error..
hopefully i wont get too flamed by the owner..
try another source for .gpx and all should be good
Lots of great routes in gpsies. You can export them in gpx format already so no need to convert.
You can also browse peoples routes in Garmin Connect again in gpx format already.
I'm guessing that the error you received was because they were not gpx files. Its not just a matter of renaming the file - you have to convert them.
There are loads of free programs which do this.
I use a program called TCX Converter. Google it, install it and you can convert popular route file formats.
