Hello All
Looking at doing an extension, in Scotland, so it will be timber frame inner skin external wall construction.
My query is, is it significantly cheaper to use timber cladding as the external skin rather than say blockwork and render?
Also, apart from the maintenance aspect, are there any other downsides to timber external cladding? Eg. do banks like them for lending purposes?
Timber cladding alone is cheaper.
I went with timber frame +block work +cladding as belts+braces in a very exposed location. If the cedar doesn't work out have options.
Cost difference between cladding(cedar) the external face (11m linear wall) was about 350 quid in materials extra over harling.
Could have gone with just cladding which would have made the figures in favour of cladding. Cladding is easier to diy....but don't underestimate the time taken to do the cladding to get it. Right
We've just been through this, cladding was cheaper in materials but balanced out by labour. Basically no serious difference in cost. In the end our decision came down to personal preference and willingness (or not) to maintain cladding
Thanks. I thought this might be the case, otherwise I suppose you would see timber clad extensions everywhere.
Corrugated metal sheet cladding is of course the other option.....
Have you considered cement board that looks like timber cladding but needs less maintenance?
Rick - no I can't say I have. Call me old fashioned but I can't abide fakery!

i did .
looked awful at all but a distance.
when i went to the merchants and got my hands on it i would not have been happy to look at it off the patio.

I like.
I would have some - do remember there is a lot of labour in detailing to get it right and if at 'person' level, avoid sharp edges.
I would like a house with metal roof - recyclable, good lifespan, looks good, lower change of leaking or damage compared to tiles etc.
Metal sheet cladding if it was in blue I'd think Wickes had opened a new branch
The slightest little ding with a wheelbarrow, an errant teenager or two playing up with each other maybe an accidental shoulder charge after a wee drinkypoo
Haha yes indeed redmex! At least you can swap a new bit in quite easily. I love them (corrugated metal sheets I mean), wish they were used more often.
Noise in driving rain for tin is an issue.
I'd want it sound deadened if part of my house ...
But I am planning to build a shed on the side of the garage using either box profile metal sheet or onduline bitumin board for roof/the fence facing wall. I won't be able to hear the noise is the plan.
