Christmas and all that...

I want a new set and I want really good ones - no shonky plasticine tat.

What's a good type/brand?

Cobalt gets mentioned a lot - is that the best type?

I'm looking at this one...

[general metal drilling, 1-10mm in 0.5mm increments]

I've found these good for making holes in my Defender:

Also worth investing in a bench grinder to sharpen and read up in drilling and sharpening technique If its something your doing alot of.

Ps its easy to completely gub a drill bit on a grinder by over heating it and making it soft but get it right and its 100% better than the old throw it away attitude. Saves a fortune 🙂

I normally use dormer HSS, I do use cobalt and they do last better but can be buggered if used incorrectly. £30 seems a decent price and as ever it depends what your usage is. Get you speed and feed rate right and you'll be fine. I use carbide drills down to 0.1mm and so am very careful with what they are set to, its not so easy with a hand power drill but with a pillar drill you should try and get close to the correct speed if you can, it will certainly mean your bits will last longer.

yep, got a bench grinder and pillar drill - just the current set is old and tired now so needs replacing really. The bigger bits are okay but 2-6mm are well used.

I bought some cheaper HSS recently and was very unimpressed, so I'm happy to spend a bit more this time.

If you need a set have a look at these;

I would buy a few spares in the more commonly used smaller sizes (I can't sharpen anything less than 3mm very well)

Don't think you can go far wrong with Dormer IMO.

Try Beal UK, they are usually really good value. I find using a drill press and cutting oil preserves the life of a drill bit.

Cobalt! Have a guy at work who does all the drilling to fix the brackets to the steel for the Brickies and every hole is drilled with a cobalt bit! No piloting, no cutting compound, straight in with a 5mm.
