So is it any good?!?! Can't watch it here unfortunately (in NZ)..
Oh Steven Moffat, you magnificent bastard.
+1 cougar it was awesome
It took me an hour and a half to watch an hour-long show (rewinding for Easter eggs) and another 20 minutes to recover.
That was fan service at its best.
Not what I expected at all.
Pretty satisfying.
Moffat's writing still winds me up at times though. I know it's part of The Doctor's nature that he makes snap decisions, but the switch from 'not regenerating, no way...' to 'ooh, regeneration's a good idea isn't it?' felt really rushed.
Superb, funny, emotional, and not quite the ending I was expecting at all.
Stunning recreation of Hartnell, though, well cast and remarkably like him, slightly fuller in the face, but his speech and mannerisms were spot on.
Took me right back to 1966!
1963. (-:
Stunning performances from Bradley and Capaldi there I thought.
Very good, some lovely one liners.
Enjoyed that, a nice send off
Is it suitable for a 6 year old ? Having a daddy day today and it's raining!
1963. (-:
Yeah, well, that’s what advanced age does to your memory... 😉
That's a nice touch. My kids will love that little tribute.
That's a nice touch. My kids will love that little tribute.
Isn't it.
I stumbled over the pic of Liz Sladen totally by chance and went "hang on a minute...!" I can't believe no-one's picked up on it before.
"Stumbled" ?
Dirty boy. 😉
I was looking for something else Who-related and it popped up.
I'm not helping much, am I.
it popped up.
😯
That’s a lovely touch, referencing Liz Sladen, shows someone is keeping an eye on continuity.
It's been going on for a while. Capaldi in particular is a walking nod to multiple previous Doctors.
Some people really do have too much time on their hands.
Just noticed that Liz Sladen's middle name is Clara too.......
Well?
I may have a new favourite Doctor.
Copy and paste from the duplicate I started 🙂
I can see some people getting angry and all diversity for the sake of it on this one, I mean Sheffield!!
Chuckled along, nice little jokes/lines about moving on and getting on with change. Bradly Walsh not too annoying so far
Pretty good. And people died.
Unfortunately they missed one 🙁
hopefully they’ll get him in the next episode 🙂
Drivel.
Thought it was wonderful, and now it’s not filmed at the end of my road it’s easier to get lost in it.
The Garth!!
Jury's out, much like it is with all new doctors.
Loved the A-Team sonic screwdriver construction montage. Especially the sledgehammer. If that's the over-riding tone then I'm in.
Jury’s out, much like it is with all new doctors.
This. I almost always take a while to warm up to a new face. Capaldi was probably the only exception.
I thought it had an unfortunate am-dram / kids TV feel to it. The script had everyone explaining every facet of what was happening in excruciating detail.
Everyone felt the need to explain every facet of what was happening in excruciating detail.
I might not have been paying that much attention there but really?

They have, one person in particular, see the Zoe Ball thread.
Everyone felt the need to explain every facet of what was happening in excruciating detail.

Same here; really? I can be easily distracted, but that whooshing noise was clearly a sound effect to accompany that fact going right over my head!
I thought it had an unfortunate am-dram / kids TV feel to it. The script had everyone explaining every facet of what was happening in excruciating detail.
Isn't it basically kids TV?
There's a lot to get through in the first episode. Time has to be made for introductions and back stories, but there still has to be a plot. It's no wonder they have to hurry it along a bit in this way. Maybe a good reason to have a double-length episode.
We watched it with the kids. It is the first time they have been old enough to understand it. Both enjoyed it.
It was rubbish. Surprised it survived that fall. Should have been a Cotic, no? No wonder he couldn't ride it as it was way too small.
As for the Doctor, not bad, will know in a few weeks but seems to me like a David Tennant script that was left over - she appears to be the same character in a striped jumper.
The Garth!!
I thought it was! I’ve read it’s not filmed in South Wales any more, seems ‘The Crown’ has nicked the last of the unfilmed interesting bits of Cardiff.
It went down quite well chez nous.
We used to know Tim Shaw too.

It is kids TV.
HTHs.
I haven't watched Dr Who since it committed the unforgivable sin of killing off Kylie.
But my wife watched it tonight.
Tuned in with interest and thought it was OK. Part of the interest was down to the fact I helped create the new Dr Who logo so I was a little gutted to not see it feature in a title sequence! Looking forward to seeing how the series develops now.
I liked her, hated the show. In the BBC's promotional push they said the increased budget made it look really amazing. It still looked like the effects were done by Blue Peter. I'm getting too old for this shit. [/Murtaugh]
Liked.
I watched it on catchup last night. Was ok.
Is she paying homage to Sylvester McCoy too?
I enjoyed it. Think she'll be an excellent doctor, but not convinced by the companions. Seems like a bit of a diversity tick box exercise rather than getting likeable interesting characters eg Rory and Amy, or Mickey and Rose. Or Sarah Jane, or Zoe (still probably my favourite). Overall though a thumbs up from me.
Had no issues with Jodie in the role even if not quite feeling yet she's the same person as the others. Really not sure about the Scooby Doo gang though.
Was getting bored and fed up with the lengthy introduction to the gang. It was feeling like an episode of EastEnders. When the Doctor turned up it started to get going. Got decently exciting with the crane stuff. So second half enjoyed it. Though it did have a bit of a Torchwood feel more than Doctor Who (Chibnall being of Torchwood background, including having written some massively shit episodes).
Incidental music is a bit of a mix. Some is good and atmospheric, some is a bit American style energetic action drama. The cinematography seems to be going for that too. Slight wider ratio (small bars top & bottom) I noticed for "film" look. Though also notice the trailers are wider still. I wonder if it's actually shot wider and being cropped. Fine if they want to do a cinematic release but for a TV series it's wasting space.
Theme tune though... excellent! Right back to Tom Baker stuff, but with some modern twist to it. Massive improvement on the horrible theme the previous few series. Hope the lack of theme at the beginning is just for this episode though.
likeable interesting characters eg Rory and Amy, or Mickey and Rose.
Likeable interesting characters like Mickey?
6.5/10 - could do better...
Not a fan of the whole Scooby gang idea either..
First episode I've enjoyed in years having pretty much given up on it especially the last Dr, really didn't like him at all. I may even purposely watch more episodes this time.
If I'm going to be picky, the rolling stock was a bit ancient, even for Grindleford.

Meanwhile, over on the Daily Mash,
Likeable interesting characters like Mickey?
Honestly, yes. Okay he was an annoying prat at first, but he grew on me as the shows went on. And the episode with the Cybermen where he stays to look after his gran was quite touching. He could be quite funny at times too......"Oh my god, I'm the tin dog".
I suppose he had his moments. He was just so... bland.

He has gone on to a very interesting career including directing, producing & writing https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0164929/#writer . He was interviewed by Kermode and Mayo about one of his films where he said he got a big wake up after a few episodes for being a bit too silly and made more of an effort.
I thought it was! I’ve read it’s not filmed in South Wales any more, seems ‘The Crown’ has nicked the last of the unfilmed interesting bits of Cardiff.
Definitely the Garth - he was learning to ride on the path below the Tump and he chucked the bike off the rocky bit that is above Gwaelod.
Is she paying homage to Sylvester McCoy too?
And Troughton (via Tennant) as well, perhaps.
Really not sure about the Scooby Doo gang though.
I was was ready to hate them… but I've already bought into them… the way they handled "gran" in this episode set out their characters well.
If I’m going to be picky, the rolling stock was a bit ancient, even for Grindleford.
When was it set?
About 8 o'clock given it was daylight on the hill and then dark on the train.
I'd just like to thank Drac for summing up these 6 pages so succinctly with one picture. Saves a lot of reading. 😀

Filmed using anomorphic lenses, gives proper widescreen, if I understand the process correctly.

Hahaha! That was accidental it was in response Slowoldman but it's worked for the thread true enough.
@CZ ah, a Fairport Convention fan I see, we shall see you at the airplane station?

South Wales Valleys Lines 2018. #arrivatrainswales
When was it set?
Well that did occur to me but the mobile phones looked fairly recent.
Right, well, out of interest I watched it on catch up last night. It's the first of the 'new' Dr Who's that I've seen, as the whole phenomenon has pretty much passed me by.
It was fine, lightly entertaining, kid's telly, with an obviously bigger budget than most kid's telly. Still looked a bit cheap though. If I had children, I'd probably enjoy watching it with them, but I'll admit to being slightly baffled as to how/why it's so popular with adults.
Are you going to tell me adults shouldn't have been watching Buffy either?
but I’ll admit to being slightly baffled as to how/why it’s so popular with adults.
Because mostly people grew up with it and after a gap it came back with just enough to appeal to adults who can accept it's never going to be a full on grown up drama but can just enjoy the characters and stories. Seemed to work quite well for JK Rowling and the Hunger Games lot.
I'm not telling anyone they shouldn't be watching anything, but Dr Who really is kid's telly, and I don't understand the reverence/seriousness with which some adults seem to treat it.
Buffy was great though 🙂

Yeah, that;'s fair, I understand the nostalgia angle for the folks that watched it in the 70s/80s (as children), but there's a much bigger 'new' audience as well.
Anyway, each to their own, different strokes for different folks and all that.
Some adults play with Lego too. Can you imagine a Dr Who box set and a Lego Star Wars creation for your 45th birthday? Each to their own though eh? 😉
It's great to have something to watch with the kids. We've also just started watching Buffy with them. Before kids I also enjoyed this stuff. Whatever. Same goes for Star Wars.
It's not a kids' show. It's a family show.
But, DezB, why is everyone into all this old music, sorry, telly, when there's so much new music, sorry, telly, that they could be watching... 😉
It’s not a kids’ show. It’s a family show.
I can see that children would enjoy watching it on their own. I can see that families (adults and children) would enjoy watching it together. I can't quite get why adults would watch it of their own volition, it's just too, I dunno, well, childish. And not in a clever Toy Story-esque 'works on a number of levels' way, just in a straight 'clearly aimed at a younger audience' way.

It was also, for you, a single episode, viewed out of the wider context of the show
If that single episide had instead been “Blink” for example then you’d probably have an entirely different but equally skewed viewpoint.
It works because it contains vast variances of serious and silly, light and dark , scary and ridiculous.
You never really know what you’re going to get but it’s usually quite clever.
I can’t quite get why adults would watch it of their own volition
Because it's fun.
Suppose we should all go back to watching I'm Strictly an X-Factor Celebrity In The Jungle On Ice Brother or something. Conform, conform!
It was also a single episode, viewed out of the wider context of the show
Yep, true, fair enough.
It was also, for you, a single episode, viewed out of the wider context of the show
... a very good point.
In the new run there's been some utter dross. But there's been some absolutely exceptional viewing also. Much like the old 'classic' show I suppose. And even then, the better episodes are enhanced by context, you're more invested in the characters. If the only Star Wars you'd seen was TFA, would you care when they killed off some random bit character like Han Solo?
It's what happens when you've got a team of writers doing different things, see also Buffy or the X-Files. Compare, well, pretty much any first season episode of BtVS to something like Hush or OMWF, for instance.
