I used to run a warranty department for a cycle company and would groan every time someone used the words, ‘Well, I’m an engineer…’

For various reasons that are too dull to go into, a couple of blokes on the patient group that I tolerate under sufferance at the GP practice I run have started to fixate about the heath benefits, to an absurdly evangelical degree, of  low-carb diets on our practice FB page, I had to have words about it with them, one of them started to defend himself with "Well, I'm an engineer by trade..." It took very nearly all my self restraint to not self harm

chapeau!

It means hat.

Nothing else, especially not an exclamation of salute.

Tj is absolutely correct, trollimg is dragging a lure behind a boat. Usually at a set depth, for pike mostly.

It is actually the attempts by some to redefine “engineer” as an exclusive job description that is new, it used to be quite a broad term.

Even the colouring pencil fairies get to use it.

No it's not. It was back in my grandparents day, but the 'short billion' has been established as a standard in the UK for decades now.

Anyway – my pet peve is people calling dogs ” fur babies”

There's a whole bunch of these. Sorry for their loss and all, but Fido having "crossed the rainbow bridge" makes me twitch. Probably left its "forever home" in the process. These are the same people who dress their cats and dogs in knitted jumpers and Batman outfits.

[chapeau] means hat.

Nothing else, especially not an exclamation of salute.

It does, but it's become shorthand for "I doff my cap to you, sir."

I thought that was an american thing, where thier version of a billion defies the standard metric convention for reasons.

I might be wrong though.

It was an American thing but it has been accepted as the norm now in the UK.

Edit: Americans are master salesmen, and everything in the United States is bigger and better, it stands to reason that what is a mere thousand million in the UK should be a massive billion in the US!

Shipping.

Now means packed and driven to your house by some poor sod.

Vinyl.

An album, a single, EP, LP, 78 etc.

Steed for bicycle.  Cockpit for handlebars and levers, quiver or stable for your few bikes,

Shipping.

See aso 'shipping new software' in lieu of 'software update release' ...no boats involved.

I guess it's used more now in a broader logistical sense of getting thing 'A' to place 'B' even if it's not a physical object or  involving sea transport.

Yep, as Ernie said. Historically the US billion was a "short" thousand million, the UK billion was a "long" million million. We've since fallen in with the rest of the world's definition, probably because it made jeff all sense.

A cockpit is obvs where you'd keep a cock.

The cockpit is the name of a now defunct nightclub in leeds, that shall we say, catered for a certain type of clientelle....under the railway arches.

Had good Djs though, espessially on techno nights 😀

'Uptick' instead of upturn or increase. Seemed to have gained popularity during the daily Covid briefings.  And there's no 'downtick' whereas there's a downturn or decrease.

Mid-Century seems a popular 'add on' when people want to sell any old tat that they forgot to take to the tip.
The same people also love to use Patina at every opportunity 🙁 😠

Uptick as in lost 10% but recently gained 2%

So that's an uptick but still 8% loss?

Some mid century stuff will be as old as victorian stuff was when quite a few STWers were born

Twitching here in support, but you can't really tell someone who's just lost their dog to give their heads a wobble. Always too soon.
