Need to get some new plates to replace the broken ones. The missus has phoned round loads of Staffordshire places that tout their Britishness, and behind the bullshit and flannel most of them are made in china and finished/painted/looked at by UK artisans. She's eventually found some that are UK made, but it works out at just over £600 for 16 large plates and 16 mediums...😈🙄
Should we stump for UK in a desperate bid to keep the country functional, or just fuggit and buy the cheapest foreign stuff that everyone does...
I seem to recall Stoke was heavily pro Brexit... Is that a reason to try to remedy the situation or a reason to let them sink?
At what point do your principles get overcome....
Oh, and just to add that the other factor here is a general loathing for the genocide currently taking place in China ( Weegies (sic)) and a realisation that every pound I spend on Chinese tat supports that regime and China's metamorphosis into the world's most powerful evil state.
Whoah, serious thread bifurcation.
If you don’t fancy the local stuff there’s surely some none Chinese options made in other more well behaved places. That said I bought some nice scandi design centre plates and they were made in China.
A lot of cheap stuff also seems to be made in turkey and I’m not sure they always behave themselves at the borders either.
Maybe find someone independent to make them for you?
Denby?
We've just topped up using our Tesco vouchers.
Some of ours is 25 years old wedding gift.
Most charity shops have full sets of crockery at ridiculously low prices, that people have kept for best - ie never used. Most of it very dated, but very green.
£600 for all those? Sounds fair. I paid similar money for a smaller set of German replacements for breakages.
Agree on Denby. We also used Tesco vouchers. Suggest you look at the seconds section, we recently replaced everything this way. It sometimes takes a while until you can get a complete set but you can eventually. It’s usually very difficult to see the blemish or reason why they are being sold as seconds. Bargaintastic.
Get the plates from a secondhand shop - thats the greenest thing to do
Surely you just buy from Ikea. It might not be local but it's all from those nice Swedish folk.
Right?
Nice little crockery shop in Hebden Bridge that MrsRNP always calls in if we are passing. Has John Lewis/good quality seconds. Not sure of country of manufacture but it keeps that Hebden woman in wages selling it.
RNP I think you mean Jules http://www.juleschina.co.uk/ Probably the most ridiculously friendly and cheerful shop owner you could ever meet. I think some of her stuff is from Portugal. If you rang her up she'd probably tell you at some length where it's all from.
The outlet is alway worth a look. My favourite mug comes from here! 😂 But our plates which we’ve had years and years were outlet “seconds”

Yep that's the place, I have to wait outside nowadays as boisterous dog would cost me even more than MrsRNP does in there!
What ever the cheapest one you like from Argos. £600 for plates? Madness.

trying to think of synonyms for ‘crockery’ 🙂
Mac...
Doh. Thought about correcting the capitalisation of China, but couldn't be arsed. You've now pointed out that I've written something completely different from what I meant 😉

Right?
Our Ikea crockery is made in Turkey. Not sure about our Ikea furniture but I’d bet it’s not in Sweden by Swedish people on Swedish salaries. We’ve not made China stuff here for centuries apart from the more expensive low volume artisan stuff and expensive stuff like Denny. We used to have a set of seconds from Denby which was still very pricy. Think we spent several hundred quid, but this time we just got from IKEA.
How f-ing much???

Wooooosh - did you really think thats what he meant or did you just type out the obvious.
Even Denby stuff's pushing the limits of what I'm willing to spend on crockary. Even more so on a 4 place setting...... They grind my gears that they inside on using XX piece set rather than place settings as well.
Our Argos specials lasted 10 years and cost a fraction of a Denby set. What makes them worth 10 X as much. Will they last 100 years ? Or is it all make England great again money ?
600 for some plates!! If your spending that much get a local potter to make some....

Denby? Factory and factory shop 5 miles from me.
Worst humblebrag ever.
I bought our latest set from our local Morrisons. 6 big plates, 6 side plates, 4 bowls for £48. We used to have a lovely set of wine glasses and a beautiful set of champagne flutes - now we have a single one of each.
The missus has a tendancy to break stuff so I don't see the point in having nice things now.
£600 on something to eat your dinner off is lunacy
I spilt a Denby mug of boiling water over both of my hands earlier after posting a Denby recommendation. It really hurts.
Makes you think.
Just to be clear I agree the 600 is lunacy. It's not happening. But it's a shame that the premium to generate some UK jobs is so prohibitive.
16 large plates?! What are you doing with them?!
There has to be somewhere where you can purchase UK made for a metric shit tonne less than £600. I honestly can’t recall ever buying crockery or cutlery. We just have mismatched stuff that’s been accumulated over the years.
16 large plates?! What are you doing with them?

Normally I'd say "you could buy a bike for that".
But you probably couldn't at the moment.
Our Argos specials lasted 10 years and cost a fraction of a Denby set. What makes them worth 10 X as much. Will they last 100 years ?
Quite possibly, some of our Denby is over 40 years old and still going strong and I'm sure my mother had some older than that. Lots of ours was from the Denby outlet or factory shop or Clubcard vouchers so it's not even expensive.
You may be able to find a studio potter doing such things, my uncle has been for most of the last year as the galleries have been shut. Cornish clay too I believe. Adrian Brough Pottery if you want to search for him on web or Facebook.
An average of £18.75 a plate ???
Christ, you could buy a takeaway from our local Thai for that 😂
+1 for old Denby. My mum started using her 70s wedding present stuff for everyday use ages ago and we now use my grandparents’ set. It’s fine in the dishwasher and microwave even if it predates both and isn’t marked as such.
There’s so much of it out there that it’s easy to pick up replacements for anything that might
break, although that’s pretty hard to do anyway.

You can get bikes at Argos too.

Buy a £50 set which the majority of will still be going to British workers doing the marketing, logistics etc and a little bit goes to China and a shipping company.
Spend the remaining £550 on local food, attractions and services that provides a good service for a price.amy of which will be small business giving people jobs locally.

How very drole sir.
While the difference between a quality bike and an Argos bike are very clear to me.
The difference between one food conveyance and another is not. Hell some shite food places think an old roof tile is a food conveyance.
Why do you need 32 plates?
Maybe it's me, but I don't like Denby, just too 'agricultural'.
We've got a variation of this as our everyday:
https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-rim-bone-china-dinner-plate-28cm-white/p4317523
Unfortunately also Made in China, although I've no idea where ours was made as it's about 15 years old.
Our 'best' is Wedgewood, and my folks bought it for me (and my ex) as a wedding present +30 years ago - and just looking at their website, up there with your £600.
The thing is, we've never broken anything from the 'best' set and only a plate & tea-pot lid from the everyday. And only ever dishwasher washed.
Why do you need 32 plates?
Large family ?
Not cheap but less than £20 a plate. The basic ware is £5.25/£3.85 a plate and the more designer stuff £8 a pop.
The website suggests it's all still made in Stoke end to end
https://www.royalstafford.co.uk/our-collections/
We got some Denby White stuff for our wedding 8 years ago which is still perfect. We also got three extra bowls from IKEA 6 years ago when we were a bit short - they're covered in grey marks from cutlery and the glaze is going, despite them only being used when we run out of the Denby stuff. So I reckon the Denby stuff does last lot longer.
Given where you are, once it reopens I'd just to to Denby factory shop and get some seconds. We have a baking dish and some small bowls we got there and I don't know what the blemishes were but they were much cheaper.
https://www.itsmadehere.co.uk/tableware
Some hideous but cheapish offerings here.
That said - just go to ikea.
I hope she's been ringing round on a British made telephone 😂

Some very good points there.
As regards the volume.... Good point. I think she decided that at some point we might invite people round and need 12 plates, then four spares. Spares are good, but not when they total £150...
I hope she’s been ringing round on a British made telephone
Luckily she's German, so more options there than you'd initially think. You know... prosperous, fairly equitable society rammed with SMEs producing stuff and keeping the wealth fairly well spread about the country and invested in useful stuff (;instead of propping up the housing market)
Bought 8 French made dinner plates from local charity shop. 50p each! Took ages to find some I liked though.
Have we reached peak Middleclasstrackworld?
As for the title of ****trackworld it's a toss up between the designer sunglasses to match the car and the guy describing himself and missus as a young professional couple and wanting to drive a 1 series BMW...
Since when china made in China is not the real deal?

Nah, that's dickheadtrackworld.
I've got some Steelite plates. Can't remember where they came from but they're awesome. British I think.

I could live with IKEA for the spares etc personally. How often will you seat 12 people really?
These are nice, scandi style but handmade in UK
https://www.pippiandmeceramics.com/
So I reckon the Denby stuff does last lot longer.
Maybe, although I bought some IKEA plates & bowls when I moved house 24 years ago and they're still fine (have lost a couple of items to breakages but have dropped lots of them over the years without it even chipping).
All our side plates are odd, we pick ones up we like from charity shops (got a couple from the USA!) so we have a big range of funky ones now. Got a load of dinner plates from m and s for 50p each in their clearance, and got a load of bowls from a friend who was getting rid of her red ones as they didn’t match the new house.
We didn’t get fancy crockery for our wedding as I couldn’t see the point, eventually they’ll get broken and you won’t be able to get new matching ones so you’ll have odd ones anyway, may as well skip the expense and time.
We’ve probably spent less than £25 on crockery in 25 years of being together, 90% of which was at charity shops!
Always remember it’s good to prioritise shopping local, but if you want to be eco friendly either don’t shop at all for the things you think you want, or reuse something rather than it going in a bin, which is a double win.
But it’s a shame that the premium to generate some UK jobs is so prohibitive.
And why might that be? Why do you think Chinese stuff is cheap?
Don't worry, soon we'll have the same kind of employment rights, environmental regulations and wages they have in China, and we won't be able to afford to import stuff.
Went through this about 6mths ago. We got a full Denby set when we got married 22 yrs ago and that set is absolutely fantastic. In value for money terms it has been brilliant.
We normally have 2 sets on the go so up until recently we had a full ikea set going too. What a pile of shite. It breaks too easily. It scratches at the slightest hint of a knife. Its plain cheap and nasty and we got about 2yrs out of it.
So when i decided we needed to replace the Ikea stuff i went and bought a complete set of LeCruset from their seconds shop in Gretna. Because i live nearby i was able to go through each plate etc and ake sure i was happy with them. I think the set of dinner & tea plates and large bowls cost me about £100. They weigh a ton, are brilliant quality and look nice.
