Hi our new place is only on oil and electric, we need a new cooker or range type cooker.
We've always had gas and do cook quite alot, have conflicting advice on the ceramic & induction hobs and how good they are, so alos considering a lpg bottle powered hob and electric oven.
What I'd like is suggestions/experience of thge electric hob types and how adaptable they are for 'proper' cooking V gas.
And any suggestions for good manufacturers of cookers (not 2.5K things though) as on a bit of a budget so 'normal' price spec. ones, I do realise induction cookers are £600 starting price too.

Apparently the new induction ones are ridiculously quick and very hot but thats from comments.
Always had gas personally BUT i do know the bottled gas ones will be expensive to run due to the amount of gas they will burn through.
A lot of standard hobs actually come with the jets for bottled gas in the box (all Ikea ones do) so its 2 mins with a 6mm spanner and none of the "premium" a "specific bottled gas" one will carry 😉
Cheers Hammy, did have the chance of an Aga parents in law had in their new place but frankly think it'd be too exspensive to run and not suited to the house either, although I do love the idea of one.
Go Induction hob
Downside might need new pans for it to work. If a magnet will stick it they will work.
It will boil water quicker then an electic kettle !!!!!
Lift pan off the hob and it stops , very little heat comes off when in use. You can almost lift the pan off and put your hand on the hob.
Worth a look !!!
Induction is about £500 per range cooker more expensive though. Gas bottles are expensive, but seem to go on forever.. most people I know with them have 2 to save that embarassing running out in a dinner party moment.
I would ask an honest question of yourself, how much do I care? Halogen cooks perfectly well, maybe not quite the control of gas or induction, but perfectly well - we've just fitted a Stoves halogen hob range and it's about 80x quicker and hotter than the old hob / oven combo its replaced I guess just by natural advancement of technology. I dont eat meat so again this might be a reason that it's not really a concern for me.
Not sure I'd recommend Stoves. British built, and shoddy with it. Looks good, but a knob fell off and spat the retaining spring under the units.. I recovered and refitted and its been alright. But I couldn't set the clock, which was somewhat embarrassing.. although there are 2 ways in the book, neither worked.. ended up calling an engineer (under the warranty) who told me the buttons were made too short on this batch and I'd have to have replacements mailed out (this was bought new from ao.com) .. still waiting 2 weeks later.
However it is a great cooker that aside. If I had my money back now I'd go with the Rangemaster though.

Sorry but that's rubbish.
We have a Brittania range with electric ovens and 6 x gas hobs which are used daily for a family of 5. They are fed by 2 x 47kg cylinders and in the 13 years we've lived here I have had to change the cylinders once.
Even if the current cylinders were empty (which they aren't) we'd have used about £200 of gas in 13 years - so effectively nothing.
Gas hobs and electric ovens FTW.
Also if pan boils over it shuts down, and I really love the timer. First I thought Raymond Blanc doesn't need one why do I :lol:? When popping on rice etc it cooks then turns off Fantastic. Pop the curry on and leave to simmer for 20 mins and go do bike things in the safe knowledge, when you get come back no burnt curry

Defo bottled gas - induction isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Got an induction hob here. Wouldn't choose to go back to gas. Super controllable and dead easy to clean.
Just left a house that was bottled gas, 2 of the 5' tall cylinders properly fitted (2 is important as mentioned above to avoid needing to call for a pizza in the middle of entertaining)
Went through about 1 every 6 months with good use, If it was my house I'd have a line added to run the BBQ too from them.
Best solution to no mains gas for me if it's just for cooking.
Cheers for the replys, looking a prices the gas/elec cooker/range is best be as you get more for your money.
So next question cheapest place for Rangemaster stuff or similar quality unit (pushing budget but reckon if don't buy any bike bits for a year it'll cover it) 🙁

Either you were running a restaurant or you had a leak because we couldn't get within light years of that amount of usage!
After 24 years of gas we fitted a dual fuel one last year. works superb

Would be interested to hear fitting costs if it's a start from scratch. I reckon it's something I'd keep if it were there but not fit specifically.

It's not that bad - not as good as gas or induction, I'll grant you, but perfectly adequate once you've got the hang of it.
