The 15 year old combi we inherited still works but it's in a bedroom and we're setting up a utility space downstairs. A local gas engineer we like has recommended a Baxi 400 (30kw). Does anyone have any real world experience with these boilers? It comes with a 5 year warranty compared to the 600 and 800 which are the exact same boilers but with a 7 and 10 year warranty respectively. Boiler plus flue and magnetic filter is roughly a grand so its costing £1850 to fit, flush and move the gas supply. I've no idea if that's good or not for a budget boiler.

I read “new comb time”. I thought it was as an odd follow on to the “hair advice” thread.

Carry on.

We've got the previous 800 version.

IME you must have a proper chemical flush on an older system, which will cost and may take a day to do properly. Expect to pay £500 for that.

Our boiler has very small channels on the heat exchangers, which block easily but are good for boiler efficiency. Ask me how I know this 😔

A litre of cleaner and back flush may be adequate but if not won't be covered under the boiler warranty.

The gas engineers seem to recommend/fit what they can easily get hold of/have experience of.

We moved our boiler from downstairs, to an upstairs airing cupboard - first guy recommended a gloworm and when we asked him if there were any other alternatives, he just said that's what he fits.
The guy who ended up doing the work installed an Ideal which has now been in for 4 years or so; also a 30kw and seems to work fine.

The price seems very reasonable; especially if there is a decent amount of moving pipework to re-locate the boiler.
Ours was just under £3k fitted, but there was a lot of re-routing of pipes, plus the flue went out the roof & we needed a condensate pump to get the condensate to the waste. in total it was 3 days work to get the old one out, re-do all the pipework & get the new one fitted & set-up.

Thanks All. The engineer predominantly fits Baxi/Main and goes to their head office in Warwick for training. I saw on Youtube that Baxi were offering cash back to installers each time they fitted a certain number a month. No issues with that if it's a good product. The quote does include a proper flush with the Magnaclean gear so that's probably where a chunk of the quote goes. I'm doing a bit of the plumbing myself for them.

Ideally the filter will be fitted on the "in" side of the boiler, sometimes this isn't easy.

Quiz the fitter about that too.

If you're getting a full clean and fitting then £850 seems reasonable

If a baxi installer does everything, including annual maintenance, then the warranty is much stronger and less subject to argument. That paid off for us when we had blocked heat exchangers.
