Okay, I now have a shortlist of 3 manufacturers.
1. Worcester Bosch - 38CDI Greenstar
2. Viessmann 100-W or 200-W, not sure which (will add weather compensator thingie)
3. Broag Avanta - 35kW or 39kW

I am leaning towards the WB or Viessmann, so just looking for those in the know for their input...

Ta!

Worcester Bosch. I have a lot of boilers, the WB Greenstar is the only one that doesn't cause me problems.

+1 one for the Worcester. Though to be fair I've not had any experience of the others. My mate is a fitter and he won't use any other brand.

Viessmann here, had it about 3 years now and no problems at all.

The weather sensor thing really does work, howeverjust above freezing it doesnt really make the boiler work hard so it can take a while to heat the house. Below zero and its instant! Overall though you really can see that in temps like it is now it saves money.

Oh and make sure you get a wireless thermostat as well.

Worcester Bosch for me too.

Had one of the CDi's fitted a couple of years ago and it just sits there working very efficiently without any problems.

Replaced a really old WB combi with this one. That was still working fine and the occasional part was still available very easily but I wanted a more efficient version.

We have a Vailant which has been pretty reliable. Apart from the minor defect that was rectified before blowing the house apart. 😯

Other than that it has been flawless and efficient.

think I am happy with the current decor so no need to have a boiler that has a blow the house apart function!

I've got an Avanta, good price for a capable boiler, though i did have the PCB unit replaced under their warranty after a year, this could have been down to all sorts of reasons, but seems to be fine since. The weather compensator's really do work, so it's worth investing in as they are normally optional extras, although compulsory in Germany!!

Anyone aware of glowarm? Our plumber priced for it but never heard of them.

Being mandatory on the continent, do Worcester Bosch do weather compinsators also?

ok, answered my above question. Viesmann are suggesting the 100-W, the 200-W being better for more complicated systems, add the weather compensator and a 3rd party wireless stat - theirs is a bit tricky to work apparently. Any suggestions on a reasonable wireless stat to go with the boiler - 7 day, multiple on/off

Honeywell CM927

I've used them in 2 houses and put one in my parents house, about £100 but will save you money in the long run. 7 day programmable, each day can be programmed for I think its 7 different time/temp settings. Great holiday mode which allows you to set the heating to come back on a certain day in the future whilst keeping a minimum temp of your choice.

This thread is so opportune. The Baxi in my money pit is on the blink. British Gas failed to sort it this morning on the annual service, and told me that parts are now being discontinued.
So what am I facing up to if I get a new WB, as seems to be the boiler of choice here, fitted?
I'm sitting down.....

define "complicated"

heating, hot water, what else?

Wingnut, Britsh Gas are mongs of the highest order. If you don't want to spend serious money on a new install, try and find yourself and "old skool" heating engineer/plumber they will know where to get parts and what's actually wroing in the first place. I've seen this 4 times myself now with friends and each time paid a callout for a local bloke who's fixed the problem..

I think it's probably GloWorm. Every plumber we spoke to when we got quotes for our new boiler said to stay well clear of them as their reliability, customer service & parts availability were all dreadful.

No personal experience though.
