Is it possible? My initial key started to bend and eventually broke. The spare's now heading the same way. Just took it to a key cutting/cobbler place and he started tutting and shaking his head saying he can't do car keys due to security and I need to take it to a special place.

What's he on about? It's just a basic old key, no immobiliser/battery gubbins.

I thought so.

So I can get a key for my front door cut for £3.50, but not my car key? I'll check some more places tomorrow. Just wanted to chexck as you hear all kinds of stories about people paying £150 for new keys. I could buy a new car for that 😀

You need to find one these mobile auto locksmiths, they usually drive round in a Transit and can normally sort you out at a fraction of the dealer price. Most key cutting places wouldn't know where to start with an immobiliser/chip key.

Unless its really old I would have thought it has a transponder in it, they been fitting immobilisers since the 90's haven't they?

Another trick is to buy a blank key off ebay, tape your old broken/bent blade to it and file the new one manually, then install it into the fob. You can cut just one side, the key will only work one way round but it is stronger!

Umm... I've no idea tbh. There's no buttons or anything on it.

Plenty of places should be able to cut that. First place talking rubbish.

If key is anything like late 90's /00's ford key then just get one cut at local locksmith. They will have a blank key and will be able to cut it for you but they will not be able to match the transponder key code inside. In other words your newly cut key will be able to open the doors but not start the ignition. It would then be a case of prising open the old key to get the chip out (not for the faint hearted or ham-fisted they are made of glass and epoxied in) and then gluing it into the new key fob. Alternatively, gaffer tape the old key fob and chip next to the sensor on the ignition barrel . You will be able to use your "door only" key for the ignition from then on.

I can confirm, taping old broken key near the ignition (perhaps under facia) will allow a dumb key to start the car. All insurance bets are off if it gets nicked and they realise, though.

Would it not work just keeping the broken key on the key ring next to the dummy?

On the other hand that key does look like a key from a 1967 triumph herald. Might not have a chip in it!!!!!

it would be pretty hard to convince me that the pictured key has a sensor in it. I've dismantled a few and that is just a key.
