Whatever happened to simply engineered motor vehicles?

I had simple cars they broke down a lot, the ones made in the UK fell apart. If you monitor everything you will know what needs maintained and replaced before it causes a catastrophic failure
But virtually all the "tech" is surely driven by a computer type affair. The road sign reader foe example is a simple face recognition specified thing for, well just road signs. Tech that's already  in phones. It will hopefully still go from a to b with most of that shizzle disabled and or switched off.
Modern cars are very good. It just depends whether you like a large car that's very small on the inside.
