Minor non-airbag shunt in car. Fit knackered airbag, shonky garage claims cost of a new one (££a lot) but doesn't actually fit it, re-fit original airbg. Profit.
Airbags are bloody expensive, often cars are written off because the added cost of replacing the airbags make it uneconomical to repair. Someone crash repairing cars and looking for a cheaper option to get them back on the road, may have bought in good faith.

not if you don't intend to drive the car again, then again people still get caught not using the seat belt.
I dare say if they look at some of the brake pads etc on sale they also do not meet standards. I would suspect the seller has not made them himself more brought them in from overseas. If people will buy a grey import/fake sram rear mech, why wouldn't the fakers then look to bigger margin items?
I recently attended an in-house training course that mentioned fake airbags. Some of the videos of the airbags going off during testing showed that they are worse than no airbag at all.
The explosive charge is badly contained, the bag doesn't inflate properly and a lot of sparks and hot material is ejected during the detonation. The few I saw would have set light to the interior of the car or given the driver facial injuries and/or burns.
Brake pads are another source of concern 😯

IDK, I've bought plenty of stuff from shops selling it cheaper than other shops, why would buying car parts be any different. For example I can buy an oil filter from Ford, or I can buy the same size filter from Mann for 1/3 the price. The OEM ford one is probably the more likley to come out of a factory in the far east, although in that case with adequate design and manufacturing.
I never buy car parts off ebay (especially brake parts or cheap airbags!). Too many fakes about and not worth the risk. It's not 100% fool proof but at least there is some come back with established parts suppliers.

You do realize Mann are an original equipment manufacturer, and supply most of VAG with original filters. Ford do not produce their own filters they will be made for them by the likes of Mann Hummel.
