After being stung to buggery riding through 500m of chest high vegetation last night, I was idly googling any physiological effects of nettle stings besides the pain, and got loads of new age guff predictably - but there's one webmd article. It suggests that whilst nettle stings hurt, if you sting an area that already hurts for some other reason it can reduce the existing pain:
Scientists think nettle does this by reducing levels of inflammatory chemicals in the body, and by interfering with the way the body transmits pain signals.
So I wonder if being stung on a long ride might actually help your legs stay fresher? I certainly was stung a long last night but remained very comfortable (besides the tingling skin) on an almost 5 hour ride.
It's tenuous I know, but I wonder if anyone else has noticed any kind of link?
Please note that I am not making wild claims, and I'm not looking for a crackpot cure or magic training remedy or anything else, so don't flame me. Just idle curiosity.
Idiot.
😉
Re-call fondly kicking my brother in the boll0cks to detract from the pain of a cut arm. That kind of thing?
I'm sure it's possible. Nobody can predict what effect nettle stings will have on a person.
