Binged all available episodes of Last One Laughing and we're loving it despite initially being skeptical for much of the first episode but then you just kind of get into it. Can't see how they'll break Richard & Lou but we'll see.
Started on Get Millie Black on C4 player last night, pretty good after 3 episodes.
Whoever recommended 1883 on the back of me liking American Primeval.. well thanks for the laugh! We’re forcing ourselves through about 3 or 4 eps, and its awful! The absolute icing on the cake was the “I’m sooo perty” girl playing Beethoven on an abandoned piano in a field! Incredible stuff 🤣 🤣

It may have been covered before, but Boy Swallows Universe (Netflix) has been a mix of harrowing and whimsical in almost equal measure. It has a dark storyline with some great characters and side story going on. There are some serious mullets too.

Watched Last One Laughing. First one was a bit slow as they introduced the game and contestants but once it got going it was very funny. There's an Irish version on there too which really hasn't hit the spot. More slapstick and prop comedy, not the same thing at all.
Bruce Parry is back (it's been a decade!) with a new series of Tribe.
Beware, he has aged a bit in the meantime (again, it's been a decade!) 😉

That's the charm of it. Rather than just filth and rawness, there's the whole naïve overly sentimental view of a teenage girl. It's Taylor Sheridan's love letter to the untamed country.
There's a lot more to the cake of crapness than just the icing.
1883 was great, I loved it. The new one isn't as atmospheric but I'm watching it anyway

Caught a good chunk of it at the weekend, not one for the squeamish with all that vom - but the older tribe member's sustained spew was unintentionally hilarious.
Last One Laughing (Prime) won't appeal to all, but had me laughing last night. Bob Mortimer is particularly brilliant.
Sheridan does perhaps stretch himself a little too thin - and the Costner debacle really screwed up Yellowstone - even though I thought the ending was a decent job. His politics do lean towards the angry conservative American working class but he writes great dialogue; likes a strong female character and has a good eye for explosions of violence.
Of his recent stuff:
Lioness s2 was great. Sherdian pops up a couple of times to flex his acting ego. The opening episode was manic. Although the plot is all over the place by the end. Zoe Saldaña on fire in this.
Mayor of Kingstown - different than Sheridan's other output as is litterally is disintegration of a city. Very grim with little gloss.
Landman was fantastic - a couple of daft plot points/episodes aside. BBT is so good in this. Has a lot of promise.
1923 S1 was a bit too 'Titanic' in its story telling. Enjoying S2 much more even though it's still sprawling to be getting anywhere much. There are some nice throw-forwards to Yellowstone (The train station and the beginning of the Ski resorts.) I think there's almost too many story threads going off with not enough attention back at the Ranch. Timothy Dalton's story arc is a bit of cringe though - not totally sure why it's so explicit. We get the picture. Overall I'm enjoying the bigger canvans though and it's interesting watching technology trickle down to the West.
1883 is fantastic and more rounded than American Primeval, which just amped up every possible version of grim. AP was a brutal journey. 1883's primary reason for its existence is to set the scene for Yellowstone, I think it does it well.
Remember he also wrote Hell or High Water and Sicario - always worth revisiting.
It's only just made it Netflix, at least here. For most of those 3 years it wasn't any streaming service that I could find

The bondsman on Prime. Kevin Bacon as an undead demon bounty hunter. Oh my, it is silly. For fans of supernatural and preacher. Liking it so far.
3 episodes of The Bondsman done. Light entertainment, easy to watch. But that’s about it.

New series of Black Snow on BBC. Really good Aussie missing person psych drama. If you’ve not seen series 1 start there. Stunning scenery as well.
Currently on the third series of Jack Irish on channel 4. It's really pretty good, sort of an Australian Minder/crime investigation type of thing. Guy Pearce is the main character, a sort of lawyer private investigator.
It's pretty funny, sweary and moderately violent. Some great characters in it
A confession, I started watching The Gorge last night. Stopped after 40 minutes to do the washing up. Nothing much happened, was basically an extended trailer. It has the plot of a nineties computer game. It's all the sci-fi horror tropes mashed together, served on a bed of sci-fi horror tropes, with a side of love story cheese.. You get the idea.
Jack Irish was a good call,easy watching.

Spiderman Across the Spiderverse - I absolutely love Into the Spiderverse but never got round to seeing Across the Spiderverse.
I am 3/4 of the way through Across the Spiderverse now, had to stop watching simply because it was nearly 4.30am (don't ask).
Absolutely non-stop fantastic. Loving it. So much background detail, too! I'm going to have to watch it again just so I can pause it every few seconds to study the screen 😂
Ack. After trying Brassic based on the recommendations above, and giving up pretty quickly, we tried Mr Inbetween based on the recommendations above. To be fair it gets 8.5 on IMDb, but I think we're going to drop it. There's not much humour for a so-called comedy drama...
Flipping through Amazon Prime the other night for some brain-out TV, it recommended (based on stuff I've seen previously) a film called Gunner.
All I can say is if this film ever shows up in your recommendations, delete it immediately.
It's beyond terrible. I mean, I sort of hung in there through it thinking it might / could get better but it didn't and it's not even so bad it's good. It's just bad bad.
I just hate the Amazon prime streamer, the home page thing is diabolical, and because i watched a single good WW2 film, it does nothing but recommend WW2 films, of which 90% are absolute crud, the algorithm on there is terrible.

Part of the problem that a lot of older series have is that they do give themselves longer to build the world and the characters, and these days we're used to stuff that instantly tries to hook us in. Other examples include The Wire, Mad Men etc. These days Band of Brothers would skip the training and waiting episodes, and stick us straight onto the beach in Normandy.
Sopranos is absolutely worth it, but yes, it takes a while to build up, and lets you get to know Tony and his family and crew beforehand.

Those are the other two biggies we've done in the last few years. I can't remember it taking this amount of time to get hooked with those, which is why I was starting to get worried!
The Wire hooks you pretty quickly. One other problem with The Sopranos is I don't think it's aged so well. It's still good TV, but it's definitely a slice of late 90s/ early 00s New Joisey that doesn't feel quite so relevant now

When it was released, it was absolutely groundbreaking. I just rewatched it a few months ago, it's still excellent TV but everyone else has copied what it did and now it seems like just another good TV show.

Over the weekend I finally watched Rye Lane on Disney+. Lovely film, like a modern London version of When Harry Met Sally.
Also watching Last One Laughing and... it's good but patchy, I'd say. E2, excellent. E3, not so much; and I think it's cause it splits into funny comedians (Sara Pascoe, Rob Beckett, Bob Mortimer) and "funny" comedians (Joe Whatsit, the one in the blue dress, Richard Ayoade). Like the other comedians are cracking up as they do some lame effort, but I just don't get it

North of North on netflix as an amusing 30 minute filler for people who love in/near artic circle shows, people and landscapes (contains an actress from the last True Detective and 12 Pines).
Resident alien - I'm watching but not recommending, I like how Alan Tudyk manages to look like someone wearing a human, but there are few other odd things that just don't quite gel together about it, the acceptance of how odd he is from the nurse, the Sheriff is just plain odd.
A real pain, enjoyed it and thought Kieran Culkin was excellent, aided by a great writer/director/main actor. The featurette on the making after was interesting too.
