Secret Level on Prime. Very 'Love, Death and Robots.' I'm not a gamer but I'm enjoying some of these, just for the amazing animation.

Anyone watching Prime Target on Apple? First 2 episodes are a but Da Vinci Code-ish. And that is not a good thing.

EDIT - just saw @martinhutch posted about it already. Suspect we have the same evaluation.

Most bonkers thing i have watched recently, has anyone see Preacher with Dominic Cooper and Jo Gilgun (from Brassic)?

I watched it on one of the streamers, but cannot see to see which it is on now, but would thoroughly recommend if you like the slightly violent and unhinged!

Rachels Farm - BBC iPlayer

Rachel Ward (ex-Thornbirds amongst others) puts her Oz farm through an eco-revolution.

Interesting concept that argues against the methane from cows adding to global warming theory and other overused ideas

watched 2 episodes of Night Agent 2. Mrs Epic was excited cos she thought it was Night Manager 2. So she was disappointed when she realised her mistake, willing to give it a try, but has fallen asleep watching both episodes. The plot is thin as anything, completely unconvincing and I don't give a sh1t about what happens next.

So this evening I'll be watching France:Wales - even the Welsh scrum is likely to have a better plan than Peter Sutherland i reckon, and will handle themselves better if there's any off the ball handbaggery

Anyone who enjoyed Ludwig (with David Mitchell) will probably enjoy High Potential (Disney+). It's not super plausible but the clues/solving are fun and the lead is really good (although she does remind me of Avril Lavigne!). We watched the 3 that area available last night and enjoyed them all. I guess it's like all these kind of shows, where does it go after the initial premise gets a bit thin. There is a mildly interesting sub plot tho.

Developed from a French TV series- I'm tempted to go see what the original was like.

We then started Paradise (also Disney+). Only one episode in but quite a plot twist at the end. Good acting all round, looking forward to catching up with a few more episodes over the weekend. Think it might end up being quite dark.

Re Preacher @scud. Absolutely ridiculous nonsense. Saw it Prime a few years ago. God as a dog.

In a similar vein, Banshee. Wow! Years later it still sticks in the mind.

Black doves was totally awful almost so bad it's good and only saved by good leads but the amount of shooting/carnage was impossibly stupid and would make John Woo blush.  The Irish hit-women were just terrible.

Day of The Jackal was absolutely fantastic and spy stuff done well.  Little slack in all 10 episodes. Each one a mini-movie.

Taylor Sheridan knocked it out of the park for me with Landman, Lioness, Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King back end of last year. Even the end of Yellowstone was okay with me despite awful reviews.

Yellowstone 1-4 now on Netflix for those that don't have paramount plus. Just a fantastic series if you like that over the top Neo-western thing.

Still less killing than on Black Doves.

Over Christmas - Films-wise I would hugely recommend Anora, Heretic, The Order, Emilia Perez, Strange Darling, Furiosa, Never Let Go, Kinds of Kindness but not so much Gladiator II which was okay-ish, not a classic and instantly forgettable.

Furiosa - still my 'cinema' experience of 24 but was a bit of a flop. I thought it was fantastic and beats out Fury Road for me.

Hard to understand how you can have both those thoughts in your head simultaneously. Obviously "realistic" was not in the list of requirements in either case, but DoJ did not seem to understand that nobody in the audience could possibly take any element of the plot seriously, whereas BD did at least have a laugh at itself and the genre.

I liked Black Doves for the same reason I liked The Gentlemen - both totally stupid but great, fun, brains-out TV. And the producers knew what they were making and how to do it well.

Stumbled across a film on Netflix - “The Hitman's Apprentice”… now it was pretty decent, starred Tim Roth and Jack O’Connell .. must be from around 2010-2012 and when I tried to look this up on imdb I found it’s actually called ‘The Liability’ from 2012.

We thatched The Menu on Disney last night after a recommendation from one of my colleagues in work. It was absolutely brilliant! Very dark, very funny, and taking aim at food snobs. Had a Ben Wheatley feel about it. Mrs B said it was the most enjoyable film she'd seen in years. Ralph fiennes puts in a great turn as a right malevelont bastard! Very highly recommended

Hard to understand how you can have both those thoughts in your head simultaneously.

Because all films/series are inherently works of fiction but the cinematic reality that is sold to you has to be convincing enough that it doesn't pull you out.

Not all thrillers drive a narrative that is just plausible enough.

Black Doves ep1 had decent writing - the quality drop was rough from there on in.  I think the UK makes a tricky cinematic backdrop for action thrillers personally.

Couldn't agree more. It was absolute nonsense and knew full well it was absolute nonsense. I really enjoyed the Jackel too, even though it was a very different animal, but equally preposterous.

We've just started rewatching The Wire because its probably 20 years since we watched it first time. 4 episodes in and its aged very well indeed. Its lost none of its impact

Well, I guess it's lucky we don't share a TV because for me DoJ wasn't remotely plausible in any respect whatsoever. None of the characters rang remotely true, and the plot, gadgets etc were obviously completely ridiculous. In BD I found the characters amusing if not entirely believable. But - as long as you're not fighting for my remote, you're most welcome to think differently 🙂

For my money, The Wire is the best thing that has ever been on TV - thriller, comedy, social documentary. Ten years after, I can still feel the shattering blow when (spoiler alert) Omar is shot. Brilliant.

It was a bit uneven, but I rate it as one of the best three shows from an amazing era of TV: Sopranos, The Wire, and Deadwood. Battlestar Galactica was surprisingly good too and Breaking Bad was brilliant.

We’ve just started rewatching The Wire

I don't have Sky Atlantic so treated myself to a second hand box set of DVDs of The Wire. I've never had a full 2 weeks off at Xmas, and managed to binge the entire set, having just prior binged the entire West Wing!

I've also revisited Narcos season 1 & 2, completed season 3, and about to start on Narcos Mexico. Perfect breakfast viewing before bike rides/commutes...better than watching the news anyway.

Mini series written by same guy, and set also in Baltimore, only 6 episodes but still brilliant, like a practise run the for the Wire

Me and Mrs jeffl watched the first three episodes of Rivals last night. Quite good mindless fun and interesting seeing actors you've grown up with being all middle aged.

We're definitely getting old though, as we said the sex scenes got a bit boring and we're too frequent and distracted from the story a bit ?

Yes, it's really obvious that David Simon had some axes to grind about the Baltimore Sun, where he used to work. If all that nonsense was edited out, it would be a huge improvement. Still a great show though.

Southland and We Own This City are both excellent too, if you're into shows that aren't copaganda.

I rewatched S1 of Star Trek Strange New Worlds. The best Trek show since DS9. And it doesn't take itself too seriously.

I finished Arcane S1 over the weekend. I have no suitable words to describe just how good this show is.  Highly recommended. For me the best animated tv show/movie ever.

The Wire is the most epic, Shakespearean tv tragedy I've ever seen. Although the last season at the newspaper wasn't as great as the others, the final moments of some of the characters - the kid going off with the heroin horse men, Marlow not being able to let his violence go, amazing.

Also, I'd never have guessed some of those actors were English at the time. They've become considerably more famous now of course.

Assuming you have a Mac or PC, you could buy a cheap USB DVD drive and watch them on your computer/cast them to your TV. You could also rip them as video files to make it easier. However, if you're going to rip them, you might as well just download them from a torrent site - you've already paid for them, you're just letting someone else do the work of ripping them.

re The Wire, i'd love for them to retro remove the clunky mini flashback in the first episode (i think) that shows the audience that the dead body is a guy from earlier in the episode.

Im enjoying American Primeavel but same with any netflix series will it get its Alan Partridge second series?

EDIT - was watching a Youtube clip most upsetting deaths on the Wire and Chris killing that delivery woman . In fact, there's loads of them isn't there 🙁

Nah, more hassle than it’s worth to watch a few hours of the series and I’d never use the dvd drive again - would a drive even work with my old iMac, don’t think it’s got software to play dvds so that’s another thing. A mate gave me the box set for a present years ago so it’s not as if I bought it.

I saw Elevation on Amazon. Yes it's another brain-out action film with enough plot holes to make Swiss cheese look like a Raptor scale, and so riddled with tropes & clichés it's amazing how they fitted anything else in.

Oh, Chekhov's gun looks a bit ratty, does it?  - 10 minutes later - Yep! There we go.

If nothing else, it should get an Oscar for Best Display Of Nostrils for that one scene. I was expecting her to sneeze at any moment, quite impressive.

There's a 10-second mid-credits scene and they even manage to fit a plot hole into that.

Anyway, that said, it's actually quite good. The acting is good and that definitely helps as well. Enjoyed it and looking forward to the sequel.

Hollywood! This is how to do a brainless action film. See also: Back in Action for how not to do it.

The Curse  (Paramount+) - not a recommendation, I watched the first episode, it was awful, am I missing something leaving it at this point? Note: watched purely because Emma(Emily) Stone.

Yellowjackets series 3, the main reason we have Paramount+ at the moment is going well after the first 2 episodes, strongly recommended by my wife who loves it.

That's disappointing, the reviews and trailers suggest it's OK, I was looking forward to watching it at some point but ideally without buying and then cancelling an Apple TV subscription. I had a free trial of it a while ago and the cancellation process to prevent them automatically billing me was insane, not going through all that again!

New series of the White Lotus: S3E1 looks just as really really good as the previous series. Best thing on telly by a long way (and having finished My Brilliant Friend, which was er brilliant, the only reason of which I'm aware to keep NowTV a bit longer).

I second this. It's the second best show on right now after Severance.

after Severance

Ah yeah. Forgot about that. V different, v good. And I think that's all we have to watch atm, plus Am I Being Unreasonable which despite Daisy May King is really good.

i think with squid games, as it's netflix's sacred cow they probably wanted to truncate the final season (as is the convention these days) to milk it and build anticipation etc

the way S2 ends definitely suggests that season '2' and '3' are effectively the same series.  I think season 3 is in June 2025?

Just finished it. It is ok. I think 2 and 3 are/were filmed back to back and being released separately because money, probably.

Way too very much is rehashed from the first series. Ya, I know, it is the same thing, but again and different, but you know, it isn't different enough.

The first one or two (I forget now, that's how good they were) episodes are total filler, no contribution to the plot. You could entirely leave them out and start at the start of "the games" and you would not miss anything.

Some of the characters have no reason for being there. The cheesy rapper? Why not, I dunno, keep rapping, instead of committing drug addled suicide? The front man in 001 outfit? yeah, er, why not, I dunno, do the regular front man job instead of risking life in the arena?

The side plots are, er, um, well... The ex police guy on the boat isn't doing squat... The soldier in the organ harvesting thing... nope, nothing really doing there either...

As often with sequels, less would have been more.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet.. Cassandra (Netflix) is worth a watch if you like Black Mirror type stuff.

Bit of rewatching but Jack Irish series on Netflix, not as good as the books but pretty good for TV.

S3 of Reacher (Amazon Prime) is good so far. First 3 episodes are available, after that it's one per week.
