I saw American Made was leaving Netflix, so thought I'd give it a go. Enjoyed it enough to go read about Barry Seal after it ended. Reminded me a bit of Howard Marks (other than it being about 10x as bonkers!). I think the film just about gets away with 'based on real events'... still was an enjoyable couple of hours.
I'm thinking of giving up on The Boys - just watched the first 1 and a half Episodes of S4
The acting is superb, especially Homelander and some parts are very clever but the violence is becoming far too gratuitous and too frequent. I mean obviously it was always violent mostly just cartoonish gore and often tempered with proper humour. It was kind of violence for those that don't really like violence but now it feels they are going for the John Wick crowd - which is not me.
EDIT American Made is a great film, a typical off kilter Cruise movie that he does so well like EOT and Collateral
I think it was binners who mentioned the film "Reality" on Prime? We'd just watched Glory Road to catch up on where Furiosa ended, needed something more thoughtful and gentle, so did a search for "Reality" - didnt matter if we searched by typing it or by voice - all the search would show was reality TV shit, top result being the Kardashians! Amazon's search system is seriously bad, must only give the most popular rubbish for mouth breathers ,or something. Bit like my new Samsung TV who's idea of popular channels to show "what's on now" was similar, reality, cop chase shows, garbage like that. Hmm! Rant over.
We did watch Reality, by scrolling through the film list (and what do ya know, it was actually "free" 🤔) Good film though, quite bewildering. Partner grew up in the USSR said the yanks are as bad as they were back in the 70s!
Top Boy is excellent. I know I’m late to it, but it’s outstanding,
Anyone waiting these past 2 years to see it all finally kick off when the new season of House of The Dragon starts, you have at least one more week to wait 😂
you have at least one more week to wait
? Its on now. I can access it no probs. I'll save it for this evening though.
yes, I've just watched it. What I mean is
I need to re-watch at least the last few eps of S1 though! After this long, I could only really remember Matt Smith & Prince Eyepatch, didn't have a clue who some of the other characters were 🤣 Doesn't help that a load of them have really similar names.
Ahh, righto 🙂
Not sure if it's been recommended already - American Fiction (included with! Prime) is great. Read a few things about it and tbh it didn't sound that interesting, but once I started it, was riveted. Some really funny moments too.
Eric. 8/10
Bumblebee Cumblebobbins as the alcoholic puppeteer was superb. Grim plot though.
Really old now, but, I watched Battleship with the kids. It did exactly what it said on the tin. But with aliens.
Not sure I'll bother with House of Dragon. Series 1 was such a total yawnfest. Matt Smith stole an egg then gave it back. Can't remember anything else happening. Wasn't exactly chock full of "I'm going to have to eat every ****ing chicken in this room" type scenes either.
‘Poor things’ on Disney+
boy meets girl😂😂😂
Just started Sweet Tooth. First episode felt pretty heavy going early on to the point where we almost gave up. Ten minutes from the end it lightened up. We'll see how episode two goes...
the new season of House of The Dragon starts
I watched ep 1, absolutely no idea what was going on or who most of the people are. Had to go back and read recaps of S1 for it to make any sense. It's going to have to stop all the plotting and move along to the action or I'll be out.
I know, I know..... It's on iPlayer not Netflix - but I believe I need to bring your attention to "The Cops". 3 Series, originally broadcast by the Beeb in '98 and pretty much never repeated and unavailable on DVD or streamers..... Until now!
Thank me later if you didn't watch it first time around 😉 . Or even if you did!

I'll thank you now! I remember this from the first time it was shown, I'm looking forward to seeing how it's held up.
Watched Axel F last night, not actually terrible (better than 3!) I wouldn't bother though if you aren't a fan of the first two as it leans really heavily on those - recycling not only characters but music, locations, dialogue, entire scenes almost! I was genuinely surprised that no-one had got a banana in a tailpipe by the end ? And how is Taggart still a serving police officer? He's in his late 70s but looks about 90 ?? Genuine lol at Bronson Pinchot's scene but otherwise not many standout moments. Kevin Bacon is good though as a new character.
Dammit, Fallout is blimmin great! No idea about games, but like Last of Us you don't need to to enjoy this. Wassername off of Yellowjackets (watch that if you haven't!) is a proper star.
The Beekeeper (Jason Statham) is supposed to be on Prime now but I tried to get it last night and got "this video is currently unavailable" although it allowed me to watch the trailer.
Trying to find it today, it's nowhere to be seen.
Anyone else find it?
??
no, it’s on Sky/Now TV.The Beekeeper (Jason Statham) is supposed to be on Prime
Anyone else think the Oura ring thing ad during The Boys was a fake ad and part of the programme?? What weird shite is that?!
No idea if it's been mentioned on here before but Mr inbetween on Disney is one of the best series on TV (in my opinion) if you like gritty but funny Aussie stuff. oh and the series 'Wayne' which is free on YouTube is well worth a watch
Recently started watching Supacell on Netflix. Sarf London drug gangs kicking off and spilling into other people’s lives… but some of the characters have superpowers. Watchable for sure. Very fruity language for a 15, so beware if you’re fire this up with a young’un.
"Anyone else think the Oura ring thing ad during The Boys was a fake ad and part of the programme?? What weird shite is that?!"
I've watched 4 eps of the new series and not sure what you mean.
Unlikely that we all get served the same adverts.

Ah, interesting! I wonder why I get fed this garbage, when I've never bought a Fitbit, or any other similar "health" device from Amazon (or anywhere else)!
This is the thing, though not the actual Amazon ad, can't find that
.
posted link so you can past into an incognito window to avoid getting served the same bollox as me!
Supacell was great, one of the best things I've seen in ages. Mash-up of Top Boy & The Boys! Nice original take on the superhero genre. Not been renewed for a second season yet, but fingers crossed.
Also, House of the Dragon just got vaguely exciting. There's hope yet!

It was a rip-off of Heroes.
Lady Jane on Prime is a bit of an arch laugh. Not enjoying the new series of the Boys. It just feels a bit tired. I did enjoy Axel F though. Proper trip down memory lane and much better than the mid-90s Beverly Hills Cop film (which was goppingly bad).

Never revisit old movies you loved as a teenager. I remember BHC as a classic of the 80s. No way am I going to rewatch it to see how crap it actually was.
Assassination Nation is on Ch4 tonight. I thought it was great and different. But then I seem to like Sam Levinson's stuff, a lot of people don't.
Was struggling with House of the Dragon series 2 until this most recent episode, but it has got good all of a sudden, brilliant battle scenes with the dragons attacking each other.
Just finish watching the OA on Netflix, such a shame it got cancelled after 2 series, such a weird and brilliant series and different to anything else i have seen.
Also i think i am "punish watching" the new Star Wars series The Acolyte, it is so dull... i don't know why i am watching it bar passing time sat on turbo when it was chucking it down.
it has got good all of a sudden, brilliant battle scenes with the dragons attacking each other.
Funny how smiting getting done makes for a better show than people in dimly lit rooms talking.

Watched most of it earlier this year, it's fine.

+1
Still the only show that's done "weird" as successfully as Twin Peaks IMO.
Funny how smiting getting done makes for a better show than people in dimly lit rooms talking.
To be honest i enjoy the "talking in rooms" and that was one of the things that made the original GoT brilliant, the often sharp and well written dialogue, i have just found the general pace on this series that bit slower, and the first 3 episodes have all just been dialogue heavy and not a lot else.
yes exactly, all the yap & intrigue etc leads you to become invested in the characters which makes their inevitable demise all the more traumatic/satisfying (depending on the character!) Although they haven't really pulled that off at all in HotD (yet) unfortunately. To be honest i enjoy the “talking in rooms” and that was one of the things that made the original GoT brilliant
BHC is actually still quite funny. BHC3 on the other hand ... awful.
How about Police Academy? Anybody willing to rewatch that and report back?
Just watched this one the BBC news channel, a documentary following Francis Bourgeois around, a pleasant way to wile away half an hour ?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001zl23
Police Academy? That would be a brave watch. You might as well chuck in Airplane and Weird Science into that (tip: don't watch either if you value your PC sensibilities).
I was discussing this with my much better half the other day about the new Time Bandits series. She reckoned the original film would be super dated and not worth watching as a comparison before the new series starts.
I'm of the opposite opinion. Some films are just funny, regardless of the current view (Life of Brian?), so worth re-watching to see if Time Bandits sits in that category.
Hmm, makes me want to watch some classics (in my head) again ... Leon, Fifth Element, Life of Brian, Nikita, Pulp Fiction, Kiss kiss bang bang.
I know there a lot of Luc Besson films in there. What can I say? I like a lot of his stuff.
We just finished Fisk on Netflix, really recommend it as a quiet, easygoing Aussie comedy to watch at the end of the night - after, say, Mayor of Kingstown or Kin, to help you get to sleep.
Can anyone recommend something similarly low-key but still worth watching - what Simon Mayo's taken to calling a 'softener', I think, along the lines of Colin from Accounts, Fisk, The Let Down, Clarkson's Farm etc
S2 of Mayor of Kingstown is looking pretty good so far; and S2 of Kin is also (within 1 episode) more compelling than the first series. Bit weird watching Aiden Gillen in 2 shows at the same time, mind
I loved Fisk and can totally recommend ‘Kim’s Convenience’ as an easy going comedy series to binge on. I thought it was great.
Softeners;
Schitts creek, working moms, Brooklyn 99, archer, parks and rec, atypical, never have I ever. There are probably others but this list came easily. (Note: might be more than just Netflix in this list)
Thanks for the suggestions. Schitts Creek we watched (it's basically a requirement if you're in Canada), the OH liked Working Moms, Archer is stone cold classic; good shout on parks and rec and brooklyn 99!
"Softener" sounds like it should have the word "stool" before it.
But, Still Game is one of the best for that purpose.
I'd also suggest 30 Rock on ITVX - arguably the funniest sitcom ever made. But you do have to pay attention as the jokes come so thick and fast in multiple layers.
We just finished Fisk on Netflix
Also available on itvx if you're on a Netflix break!
Also noticed you can now watch Northern Exposure via Prime, BUT it's scheduled like old-fashioned linear TV.
You just have to dip in to wherever they are in the series.
It's not been available anywhere for years, and I'm pleased to say it holds up pretty well.
Especially Maggie.

Colin From Accounts season 2 has been transmitted in Australian, so is potentially available if you are happy to use murky methods. Other potentials include (not all probably qualify as low-key), The Great (latest season has been kicking around for ages but has just stated going out weekly on Channel 4), Brassic, Trying, What we Do in the Shadows, Big Boys, Ted, Poker Face, Bad Sisters, Glow, Wednesday, Am I Being Unreasonable?
School's Out Forever is now up for free on Prime. I liked this, it's got some interesting points to make about age and class. Bit more thoughtful than the trailer suggests.
Now I’m up to date with the boys and all my other faves. I’m not finding much to watch on any of the streaming services, Disney, Apple, Netflix, prime, channel 4 (a surprise treasure trove for films, just re-watched the Lincoln lawyer)
anyone got any horror or sci if recommendations? For reference one of the best horror I’ve seen on the last 12 months was I saw the devil.
or any good recommendations tbh. I’ve read most of the thread and would have watched dead man’s shoes, but that’s now not available on film 4.
As a link to The Boys, Antony Starr (homelander) is also superb in Banshee. Never heard of it till a pal mentioned it, but don't know how it slipped under the radar as it's excellent.
I don't know if it has already been mentioned, but there's a newish third series of Mandy (written by and starring Diane Morgan) on IPlayer.
Irreverent, stupid humor with a dash of surrealism. We think it's hilarious.
Banshee looks good. Only place I can find it is to buy on prime. Unless it’s included on another service ?

binge watched it a few years ago, very good indeed.
I’m just reminding myself how good Rick and Morty is.
Starr is also in that Jake Gyllenhaal film 'The Covenant' (free on Prime). Took me a while to figure out where I'd seen him before because to me he IS the Homelander.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is *finally* out on Amazon Prime, months after it was released in the States. It's enjoyable in a sort of Boys Own Adventure style thing - highly fictionalised and quite ridiculous but standard Guy Ritchie entertainment fodder.

Not sure how many of these would fit the bill but things on my to-watch list, when the OH is away: Godzilla Minus One, Fall of the House of Usher, Nope (all Netflix). Am slowly working through The Boys; can really recommend the latest Fargo on Prime - not horror or sci fi but rollicking good fun!
Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but Snowfall, which i think started on Sky, but now all 6 series are on Disney + is one of the best things i have seen in years, story of cocaine and crack flooding LA in the 80's and the CIA links to using the trade to finance war in Nicaragua , so well filmed and done by John Singleton who did Boyz in the Hood.
snowfall is great and also on iplayer (not sure if all 6 series are on bbc though)
I noticed the film Wicked Little Letters is on Netflix now. Can't really recommend it as I haven't watched it yet, but it seemed to get good reviews when it was out in the cinema and was on my 'to watch' list.
Saw Wicked Little Letters at the cinema.
I thought it was excellent ,with a great main cast.
Based on a true story
Currently 6/8 through season 1 of Dirk Gently on Netflix. It's great, like some weird cross between Dr Who and the Umbrella Academy.
Some proper laugh out loud moments.
Why have I never read these books? Must get hold of them.
Season 2 less good than season 1, sadly.

Kermode liked it, but got some letters in saying listeners hadn't, so could go either way. But I've added it to my to watch list.
We started watching Dinosaur on BBC. 30 minute comedy, set in Glasgow; not too much story to it, but funny enough for us
Fall of the House of Usher,
I found to be total yawnsville.
Nope
By contrast was excellent.
We're working through S2 of Mayor of Kingstown. Very good, in a quite stressful way; and I sadly have an idea of where the story will go for S3
Documentary on BBC2 t'other night called something like Kyle: America's most divisive gunman.
Story surrounding a young lad who shot some protestors in self defence. What happens is absolutely tragic, but the aftermath is gobsmacking and in this instance, proves the US has barely moved on since the wild west.
High Country, an 8-parter. There's an opening for a second series as well
Recommended for a look at a different Australia to the one that I imagine and on BBC i-Player https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m0020rnw/high-country
Probably been mentioned, as it's from 2022 - but we've started Outer Range on Prime. 4 episodes in, going well. Nice n weird, almost Fargo-ish except not funny 🙂
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is *finally* out on Amazon Prime, months after it was released in the States. It’s enjoyable in a sort of Boys Own Adventure style thing – highly fictionalised and quite ridiculous but standard Guy Ritchie entertainment fodder.
The various historian YouTube videos of the story upon which it’s based are better viewing IMO.

We started on that but found it pretty poor - let’s try and shove every possible cliché and current social theme into one series.
Saw Wicked Little Letters at the cinema.

Yes, I liked it too, and I absolutely love Jessie Buckley 🙂
Has "Lady in the Lake" been mentioned yet? I was a bit unconvinced after the first episode but now really enjoying it.
let’s try and shove every possible cliché and current social theme into one series.
True, but still enjoying the scenery and the story 🙂
Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy out this week.
Watched the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare last night.
Its hard to put into words how bad this film is.......is it the terrible acting, is it the fake public school accents, is it the total absence of any suspense, is it the relentless over the top Tarantino style killing that was soooo 90s, is it the half arsed attempt at some kind of break in the monotonous linear timeline, is it the awful CGI?
I thought Lock Stock and Snatch were pretty good with interesting plots and funny scripts - this was definitely in my top 10 worst films of all time!
At least Tommy finally got Ze Germans
in my top 10 worst films of all time
"Cheeell winston" ... sorry, couldn't help myself.
