Haven't seen a thread for a while - Mrs Tyred and I looking for some new stuff to watch on netflix.
Random things what we like:
- Six Feet Under
- Atlanta
- Handmaid's Tale (season 1, season 2 got a bit silly)
- the films of Richard Linklater
- The Letdown
- Flowers
- Green Wing
sort of thing.
The Netflix menu is useless - if you like the sort of stuff above, what else have you watched lately that's good?
Ta!
How are you with subtitles?
Breaking Bad, Just Call Saul.
Fargo (the series, not the film) Series one is particularly good.
Subtitles - I can read.
Fargo - liked what I've watched, there's a daunting amount of it though!
Having a prime binge at the moment, worth a swap for 3 months?
Oh, yeah. Orphan Black.
Ozark?
Season 1 was pretty good and Season 2 starts a week today.
Designated Survivor, Altered Carbon, Fargo (if you can stop shouting "why are you all so stupid? at the screen), Better Call Saul, Brooklyn Nine Nine, The Expanse, The Alienist, Narcos, Star Trek Discovery, River and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (but it depends on who the guest comic is)
Narcos, Happy, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, I've just finished watching Bordertown, really good Finish crime drama.
Mindhunters is worth a watch.
Odessa
Mental documentary about Colombian cocaine cartels trying to buy a Russian sub. Some real characters
Stranger Things
Any good films on there at the moment?
What Happened, Miss Simone? There's an excellent book to go with it.
(not a film)
departures
bit marmite i reckon. travel doc
two canadians travel the world.
beautifully shot
ones a bit annoying the others that messy pisshead you went uni with
i love it
Glitch is good
Black. You need to like Korean subtitled stuff.
Mind Hunter
Una bomber
Stranger things
New star trek
Lost in space
Ozark
Shooter, The Expanse, Star Trek Discovery, Jessica Jones, Travelers, Z Nation (walking dead with it’s tongue firmly in cheek), Safe
just finished the 1st series of Preacher which i found entertaining. the guy from This is England being particularly good
I don't know if you like documentaries, but there are a few docu-series on Netflix that are as gripping as the classic box sets like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
Making a Murderer: a crime story that twists and turns in a way that you would dismiss as too far fetched if it had been written as a work of fiction.
Wild, Wild West: the bizarre story of the Rajneesh cult in the USA, told first hand by the people involved. Includes a guru who owned 93 Rolls Royces and the biggest bioterrorism attack in US history.
The Keepers: the investigation of the unsolved murder of a nun in 1969, which explodes into a much bigger and very disturbing story. Brilliantly paced, with a series of cliffhanger revelations as the story unfolds.
The Staircase (another close up look at a man accused of murder) and Evil Genius (about the pizza delivery neck bomb robbery) are also worth a look.
I like the way the episodic documentaries have more time to get under the skin of their stories.
Loads of good stuff already recommended.
At the moment I'm watching "the Vietnam war" really top notch documentary. Something you might think you know all about, but you don't.
Can't remember which of these were Netflix, Amazon, or just cable, but decent tv shows.
The Americans
Stranger Things
The Deuce
Counterpart
Succession
Better Call Saul
Westworld
Snowfall
Narcos
Blunt Talk
Brockmire
Preacher
Happy!
Future Man
The Expanse
The Good Place
I’ve just finished watching Final Space and Disenchantment. Both quirky animated series that I enjoyed. Mooncake from Final Space may be the cutest (and most lethal) animated creature I’ve seen “chukadee”
Black mirror. Last chance u. Rick n morty. Black mirror. black mirror. black mirror and black mirror
Money Heist was a suprise. Long series though .
The Sinner is excellent on NOWTV.
Alias Grace
Currently working my way through Gotham and Sons of Anarchy
Gotham is pretty good.
Disenchantment. A bit like Futurama does dungeons and dragons. Some recognisable British comedy actor voices in there if you listen.
Started off well, but maybe not enough laughs, and by the last few episodes it'd defo hit its stride. Really looking forward to series 2.
Final Space I'm not so sure about. Sone good ideas but no real character development, and not many laughs.
I'm currently working my way back through the first few series of 12 Monkeys - great show, one of the best things that Syfy has turned out.
The Barkley Marathons
Just finished Flint Town. Not bad.
The Defiant Ones- dr Dre/jimmy iovine documentary is ace.
Defiant Ones and and Barkley Marathons seconded.
Hip Hop Evolution is a nice 4 part docu if you're into that sort of thing.
The staircase was very good, although after some further reading perhaps a little biased.
Didn't really rate Evil Genius, intriguing story made incredibly dull.
Just finished Flint Town. Not bad.
Incredibly well made but very depressing. Hard to argue with the bad stuff they've had thrown at them.
ozark 2 is piling on the menace.
So much going off.
The debauchery in the first two episodes is already stacking up the odds.
Hope it keeps it up!
13 Reasons Why, very good, gets a little long winded in the middle, the ending is worth sticking with it.
If you enjoy Sci Fi:
Just finished Lost In Space, enjoyed it, good old fashioned Sci-Fi romp.
The Expanse is also great, Season 2 is excellent
Star Trek Discovery is pretty good too - the central premise is a bit silly but its very slickly put together.
Stranger Things probably counts as sci-fi too and is well worth a look.
Plenty of other good stuff on their too.
Ozark has just started season 2 and is very good
Deadwind, a Finnish 'The Bridge'.
She ain't no Saga though....
Bit late to it but I'm just getting through Line of Duty. Some of the acting is really bad IMO but it's a page turner
I'd recommend Black Mirror if you haven't seen it.
+1 Black Mirror
new season of Ozark has just started too.
Shows that I've enjoyed the most this year on Netflix -
Happy
Dirk Gently
Altered Carbon
Jessica Jones 2
My finger has been hovering over the cancel button for a while with netflix. Amazon prime is killing it with movies and tv shows whike NF just seem to be pumping out crappy content at an alarming rate

Really? Care to share? I have the opposite view at the moment.

Me too, we have Prime, Netflix and Now TV and spend 90% of the time watching Netflix. It has the most content and the best content in my opinion
Watched the first couple of Ozark series 2 last night and it’s bloody brilliant. Looks like things are gearing up to get very very dark!
It's prime, but Sneaky Pete is worth a look.
Making a Murder on Netflix is superb!
Amazon prime is killing it with movies and tv shows
I had a Prime trial recently. Everything I found on there that I wanted to watch wanted further payment (including a TV series from back in 1999!). I literally couldn't find a single thing I wanted that was included in the subscription.
Amazon prime is a bit of a mess and the layout does it no favours. Sneaky Pete has been one of the best things on there.
No comparison to Netflix's best stuff though.
Better Call Saul S4 is fantastic yet again.
I'll confess that I don't have the usial taste in stuff but Prime has -
American gods
Preacher
Seinfield
Xfiles
Vikings
Lucifer
All or nothing
Unreal
Mr Robot
Plus it has been putting up a lot of film noir and old school sci-fi so I've been a very happy bunny
I'll give you American Gods: However Netflix also has the X-Files. The only thing I regularly watch on Prime is Parks and Rec.
However Netflix also has the X-Files
UK Netflix? Just looked and it's deffo not there
Oh, must just be Canadian Netflix then.
Looking forward the film Hold The Dark - from today.

Really enjoying BCS S4. Fabulous, unshowy and unpredictable.

It was earlier in the year.
Last season of House of Cards soon...
Looking forward the film Hold The Dark – from today.
Yes, I liked the look of this. Will be watching it this weekend.
Yep, the notification for Hold The Darkdropped into my inbox today. I thought I recognised the name of the director, Saulnier so IMDB’d him. And yep, he directed Blue Ruin a few years back which was one of the best revenge genre films I’ve seen. I’d thoroughly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it.
Hold The Dark
Just watched the trailer at work (no sound), have no idea what its about but will definitely be watching it this weekend. I'm a sucker for anything wilderness based.
Blue Ruin was fantastic - shot on a mega low budget. And his follow up Green Room was very tense too.

Okay so have you seen 'Wind River' on Netflix?
It's excellent. Scripted by Taylor Sheridan of Hell or High Water / Sicario . Set in Wyoming, which was great for me as I visited that area last year.
Wind River was very good indeed. The ending was nuts. 😀
Black Mirror
I watched the first episode, thought, this is a bit weird, it might take me a few episodes to get into this... Then realised the 2nd episode is an entirely new story? Does it all get tied together, or is it just random? I opted out based on the latter.
Watched the Sinner instead, which is really good and not a big investment in time.
Narcos is pretty good.
Mr Robot if you like techy stuff, although the second season drags. Picks up a bit in the 3rd.
Really enjoyed Stranger Things, but not been too fussed about watching the 2nd series.
Wind River was very good indeed. The ending was nuts
yeah - i didn't have a clue where it was going. Comes out of nowhere.
Black Mirror is basically a modern "Tales of the Unexpected" or "Outer Limits". Each episode is a self-contained story with different characters, times and locations, the only connection between them is that the overall theme is about the potential for misuse of technology.
My current Netflix recommendation is Big Mouth, I only discovered it recently and it's made me laugh a lot.
Finished watching “Maniac” last night. Enjoyed the performance of the main characters (Jonah Hill a more nuanced Ben Stiller) and the Eighties-evoking sets, but ultimately feel a bit short-changed by the ending. I’ll try to focus on the consolation of it not meandering on like “Lost”, and would still recommend it.

Second season is due for release in a few days.
Just tried to watch Hold The Dark, turned it off after an hour....
Maniac
Ken Burns 18 part documentary on the Vietnam War is a riveting watch. Possibly the best documentary series I have ever seen.
Norsemen series 2 has just appeared yah!!! 🤗
Goliath on Prime was very enjoyable. Also The Looming Tower. And American Gods as mentionened.
On Netflix...
Just finished season 4 of Gotham and it was superb. The darkness has moved up a good few notches and the style and production is excellent.
Mindhunter was also a highlight this year. Again really nicely produced and shot.
For something a bit different then the Barkley Marathons was a great watch too.
I’ll second Mind Hunter and Wind River. The former is very atmospheric, the latter a beautifully shot film with a great plot.
Black Mirror is brilliant, also loved Final Space.
Amazon is absolutely dire, I pay for Prime and don't even bother with it.

I watched it, thought it was decent but not quite what I was expecting it to be.
