I've got a nest, which 'learns' my schedule.
If I go on holiday it'll go on 'eco' automatically, and it'll turn on once it recognises I'm home.
If I know when I'll return, can I schedule it to turn the heating on for my return?
Obviously the weekly schedule it has is redundant while I'm away ages it's on eci, but I don't want to return to a house at 16 degrees.
I can't find anything anywhere to do this, I'd have thought it would be right at the top of the list...

And yes, I could remember to turn it on in advance of my return, but I inevitably never remember.

I’ve not tried it but using something like IFTTT might work? Or Google Routines or Apple Shortcuts using a geofence?

Or just turn the temperature up when you get back?

Google Routines is the best way of a bad bunch, but it's not brilliant because the thermostat knows that you're not at home so reverts to eco settings.

The only reliable way is to use the Nest app and set the home/away status to home.

You don't even need to do that. It'll turn on automatically pretty much as soon as you walk through the door. I find that's enough. By the time I've got the car unloaded, coat off etc, then it's already warming up.

Snarky answer; you should have bought a system that can do geo-location properly 😉

Helpful answer; as above, I am pretty sure you can achieve this using IFTTT. As I understand it, the major limitation with IFTTT seems to be that if any of the phones used to track family members leaves the house then the heating switches off. With a proper system (eg. Tado) it will turn off when the last person leaves the house (and turn on ahead of you arriving home so it is up to temp when you arrive, rather than turning on when you get home).

As discussed on some of the other “smart” heating threads, Nest is unfortunately one of the least smart systems! They do have an API though, so can integrate with other systems. IFTT or similar probably the easiest & no doubt lots of ways of doing it… Geolocation or Google calendar (if “end of holiday” is marked) being the most obvious.

Nest does this apart from the bit about anticipation you coming home and turning on ahead of your arrival...but no bit deal to use the app to turn the system on when you're heading home....anyway as has already been said, it only takes 10 - 20 mins for the system in my home to start warming things up so not a major convenience. Anyway I've not looked that deeply into it and with the back up of Google it might be possible with Nest to do that I don't know..Google knows more about you than you do yourself and certainly more than any other IT ecosystem out there. It's all in the software so a feature that can easily be added in an update if Google decided it was needed.

Also what about Alexa and Google Assistant? I have neither of these systems but if I had I'm pretty sure the Nest would integrate with these and offer up a whole host of features.

Is this a 3rd generation thermostat?

If so I don't understand your problem - just use your phone to turn the heating/hot water on (or off) when you leave work, finish your ride etc.

i dont think there is any functionality to do what you are looking for.

"Hey Google, someone's home"

"Hey Google, everyone's away"

You need to have set up Home/Away routines in the Google Home app. There is no way it can tell you "intend" to go home from distance without you telling it.

of course there is! Given enough data an AI algorithm will be able to figure it out - and some systems do implement this (with varying degrees of success, to be fair 😃)

I don't want to get home to a cold (13 degree) house.

Bugger. Seems to me a fairly obvious thing for the Nest app to have 🤷‍♂️

I'm, my problem is I want the house to be warm in a weeks time when I get back from holiday, and I want to schedule it to be so now, rather than either when I walk thru the door into the cold, or if I remember to do so when I'm also mid journey home.

Wish I knew what an IFTT was 😂

Hey ho! I'll stick a reminder in Google to remind me to turn on my heating via Google 🙃

or if I remember to do so when I’m also mid journey home

"Hey Siri, remind me to turn on heating when I leave X"
or
"Hey Siri, remind me to turn on heating at X o'clock on Y"

I assume other voice assistants can do the same.

IFTTT is an App. Download it (it’s free I think) and have a play with it. It’s basically a rules based logic engine, so can programme things like “make all the lights in the house flash pink when Aunty Maud calls”.
