Hiya Chaps,
We have a terrible heating control unit, that is a complete PITA to set. We have two zones, with two units - upstairs nd downstairs.
We'd like to go with something that has an app controller, and has the ability to be controlled remotely - so I can set it to come on when I'm leaving work, or coming back from riding.
What have you guys gone with? There doesn't seem to be much of a difference in real features, but I'm interested to know what's good for dual-zone running.
Cheers!
Ricks
I installed hive on a 3 zone system and it’s been great - a bit cheaper than nest as well. They quite often have very low cost installation deals if you keep an eye out for them.
I'm deciding on this too. I really don't think it matters. They all claim to do the same or similar thing. Better off going with a system that has longevity - no point in getting something that isn't one of the market leaders in case it goes bust or something and future support is hazarded. I'm settling on Nest because they look the best aesthetically, seem to be the best on the learning side (have wet underfloor heating), have one of the broadest range of other accessories so you can add to the system.
A mate has Hive which he thinks is great, but only got it because that was what his plumber installed, and is a bit cheaper than Nest so that is in the running too...but I still prefer the aesthetics of Nest, its supposed to be more user friendly than Hive and you can configure the display to show things like weather, time and other info and when you approach it the display detects you and changes to the normal thermostat display, which sounds like a nice gimmicky feature.....and who doesn't love a gimmick!!
We had to go to Grand Designs live at the NEC last week to look at sliding doors (it was rubbish) but there were a lot of sliding doors.
There was a Hive stand, picked up a Hive plus installation plus a free Echo dot for £179 which I thought was an OK deal. I'd wait for Black Friday there were good deals last year although they are often for the water and heating Hive not the heating only one.
I'm not bothered about the learning stuff we only have a 24 timer on our boiler so i want to use it as a much more controlable timer and to <span style="font-size: 0.8rem;">control it remotely.</span>
Stainypants - have you got a high voltage system? These things tend to run off low voltage systems but mine is a high 240v system. You can get around it from the thermometer side, but just wondering about the receiver side that replaces the clock.
One of the most useful features in my mind is the facility where it detects if you're in the house or not so even if it is times to be on, if you left the house then it would know and shut the system down.

I've been looking at this, but haven't really come up with an answer... Nest can, but it will only turn back on as you walk in the door rather than warming up in advance.
Tado can do it, but only if you pay a few quid a month to subscribe to the "auto assist" function or something.
The Drayton one can talk to IFTTT so might be more flexible.
With Hive and Nest (and most of the rest no doubt) you can command the heating to come on from outside the home via the app and I guess say 'I'll be home at 3pm' and it'll for the rest out. But it's quite handy for it to shut down automatically if you leave the house.
Tado also works with IFTTT
Had a nest for a few years, it's great. Only a single zone but you just add more of them for multi zones guess.
They run off 240v on the receiver side and have a 12v output to power the programmer or you just plug it in with USB adaptor to any socket.
As others have said, if it's off because it has detected you're away then it'll only pick you up when you enter the house generally. Of course you can fire it up yourself remotely 30 mins before you get back with the app.

Honey well evohome, more expensive but worth way more control. Think of it like this. When you want a light on in the living room you don't switch on every light in the house. With a central heating control this is what you are doing. With evohome you can switch on the heating differently in every room.
Hive uses geolocation if you allow it in the app so will know that you are on the way home and switch it on.
it will also do multizone
I have just installed Drayton wiser to all my radiators. I am happy with it, I chose it over the other options as it was a lot cheaper, but also because it supports IFTTT. The reviews of the latest app were pretty good as well
Been using the tado for nearly 2 years. It detects when no one is home (you need the app on the phone of the house occupants that want to control it) and turns off. It also stops the hot water pre-heat process overnight, a small saving but it adds up.
It also turns the heating on when you get near to home. Don't have to pay anything extra for this feature. It has definitely more than paid for itself in gas savings.
I also liked the fact that the thermostat runs off batteries so it wasn't an issue find a place for it.
Installed myself, not an issue if you already have a wireless controlled thermostat for your boiler. Two low voltage wires to connect and that's it.
Tado here too, had it for a year and after the initial novelty, I've forgotten about it just does it's job. The savings it reported last year were pretty good, if true.
Personally, I much prefer the understatedness of the looks compared to the flashy Nest.
Been successfully using IFTTT with evohome for a couple of years. Was turning off heating when I left the house (when disconnected from house wifi) and turning heating on when about 15 mins from home (geolocation). Worked faultlessly, but that was with a Motorola on Android 6, I've recently bought a new phone with Android 8 and IFTTT has effectively stopped working, it does work but more often than not a 15-30 min delay. IFTTT website has a whole section on Android 8 so it is obviously a known issue, which I haven't been able to resolve yet.
