Nest Protects are coming to the end of life but it looks like Google are giving up on these so like for like replacements aren’t an option. Anyone any other recs for smart smoke alarms? Would prefer HomeKit compatibility if possible.

I've got 3. Don't they just work through the nest app?

I've never done anything really through Google with them as such.

They do, they’ve a 10 year lifespan though and mine are about to come to the end.

Having done some googling I think we’d probably be OK with something that meets the current Scottish regs ie. no app but RF interlinking.

You can still buy new Nest alarms. Google have said they'll support it until they are end of life so you should get another 10 years. You are at the mercy of them changing their minds but that is true of any system. I read somewhere that First Alert are the new partner but haven't looked into yet as we have a few years to go.

There’s a new third party Nest-compatible alarm but I don’t think it’s available outside N America.

You can still buy new Nest alarms.

But you shouldn't. They have a pre-programmed expiration date 10 years from the date of manufacture, so you're cheating yourself.

Aico make decent alarms. Wouldn't want an interest connected smoke alarm anyway, the stress if you're away from home and get an alert is just not worth it.

That's what I'm going to do.  They are great so I'm happy to stick with them for another 10 years,  that's probably longer than I'll last

The lack of a heat alarm in the Nest range puts me off replacing mine (which will need to be done soon). I'll go for some other system that meets the current Scottish standards.

What if you are next door, or in the garden, or down the pub? Even if you are a 1000 miles away you can still call the fire brigade, or get a neighbour to check (or at least warn them).

10 years is pretty standard.

From the Aico website:

Smoke alarms generally have a recommended lifespan of 8-10 years. All of Aico’s Smoke Alarms last 10 years

Oh FFS! I nearly posted last week after getting an email stating my 2nd gen Nest Thermostat will transition from Smart to Dumb!  It will stop working with the app and Google Home in October.

And now the Protects too!?

I only have two but they work for me as I've got one in my house and one in my campervan as it's parked close to the house.  So i'll get an early alarm in the house if the van goes up, and if I'm away from home the van one will still work offline.

They've offered me 50% off a Tado starter pack but I'm still grumpy so not sure if I'll just jump ship to something else...

The problem will be when exactly any Nest Protect 2 you get was manufactured, which is the expiry date - not when it was installed.

Doh, both my Protects need replacing soon, hadn't heard google were abandoning them 🙁 I don't suppose alternatives can use the Protect mount, would save some hassle...?

2027 is when two of mine expire. The other two are 2030.

You can get First Alert alarms on Amazon, so fingers crossed. Even the mount looks similar, but a couple of screws to mount a new baseplate isn't too bad.

I literally wrote two posts ago that you won't get 10 years of use from these: they will stop working 10 years after they were manufactured, not 10 years after they were installed. If it rolled out of the factory 2 years ago and has sat on a shelf since then, you'll have less than 8 years of life until it commits smoke detector hari-kari.

Im in the same boat. Interestingly they have now said they will not support the nest thermostat after next year. it seems they are getting out of the hardware game which is a massive worry

Stop working, or advise you it needs replacing? Has anyone had one expire yet?

I imagine it'll still detect smoke but the manual says something about continuous chirping to annoy you into replacing them.

Just went through this dilemma myself, with expired nest alarms.  Decided to punt the problem down the road and but new nest alarms for now (fingers crossed google keep to their word and continue that support until they expire).

Disappointing snag is that they had been on the shelf for a bit and only had 9 yrs remaining until they expire.  ho hum, future me  problem.

add this to the Google Graveyard https://killedbygoogle.com/ It's a long list 🤣

would put me off ever investing in any Google hardware tbh

Alternative solution to the problem: just use normal alarms. Pretty sure all smart speakers (my Apple HomePods certainly do) will detect the smoke alarm sound & alert you.

Wouldn't want an interest connected smoke alarm anyway, the stress if you're away from home and get an alert is just not worth it.

just because you don't know your house is on fire, doesn't mean that it isn't 🤣 Some people might find that more stressful. We're all wired differently I guess.

Some kind of phone notification might've saved my PIL's house from being totally gutted whilst they were out walking the dog and no-one was around to hear the smoke alarms. Who knows?
