We've got a Mountain Ash in the front garden.
Mrs S was out today with the loppers, removing a couple of small branches that overhang the pavement.

Geezer from across the road toddles over and asks if we can trim all the branches on the other side of the tree, the side overhanging our front garden, because 'It spoils the view from our bedroom'.

Mrs S told him no, we like our tree.

They only moved in a few months ago, so must have been aware of the situation before they bought the house.

It's not a big tree and isn't causing any damage.

He reckons he'll contact the council and complain.

Anyone any experience of this, from either side?

And how can I ensure matey doesn't pay us a nocturnal visit with a bucket of copper nails?

Report him for trying to look into your bedroom windows.

I don't understand, he lives across the road, so is it the view from his bedroom or yours that is blocked, if it's his bedroom how is it blocking his view from across the road?

we need a diagram!

I imagine he lives at 90 degrees to the OP and a junction is involved.

All the branches? Like half the tree binned?

Its not a bad shout to keep it tidied and in check. I have two rowans that have jyst got to big

Tell him to contact the council. They will charge him for the privilege, assess the tree and if it needs trimming because of light advise you to trim it accordingly.
Having been in a crap situation that escalated badly and has cost unnecessary money and a police investigation he has very little grounds to make requests or demands. I lust after an isolated crafters cottage......

But we do.

So you're openly advertising as swingers but are offended when a neighbour asks your missus if she could enhance his bedroom activities?

A couple of years ago I had a Mountain Ash which died in suspicious circumstances. It was fine all summer, lost it leaves in autumn, but was dead by the next spring.

So he isn't your neighbour as such but the geezer from over the road.
He can go swing.
"He reckons he'll contact the council and complain."
Give him a week and ask him how he got on.

Best to reach a compromise with him. It's good to have all neighbours rowan together really.

If the tree is wholelly in your garden what's he expect you to do, get planning permission for it?
Tell him to nick off.

the side overhanging our front garden,

Don't understand. It overhangs over your front garden or overhang from your front garden? If the former I can't see how he can have an issue with a tree overhanging your own property. If the latter, what is it overhanging?

The next house along, separated by a small road.
Houses face east, bedrooms north.

It came with the house.
I enjoy the small frisson of excitement it brings to mowing the lawn.

It's the bit overhanging our own garden he's whinging about.
It overhangs the pavement too. We trim a couple small branches once a year in case the local basketball team decide to go for a stroll.
It's not a bad view, tbh.

Sounds like ernie is barking up the wrong tree, though if he's not there's no doubt the culprit deserves a good birching.

I don't think the neighbour has any legal ground to complain. Under the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 complaints can be made to the council about high hedges, but there must be at least 2 trees to be a hedge.

You need to move before he asks you to 'look after his goldfish'.

Make sure you shove a bale of japanese knotweed down his urethra before you do, though

I think we're getting to the root of the problem - thanks everyone.

I reckon he's just a bit lilly livered about revealing his true feelings
Best put some clothes on and draw the blinds.

I'll make sure everyone leafs quietly.

Not the view from our house, above, BTW, in case anyone thinks I'm bragging.
