I think we all know what Tom Cruise really looks like now...

(I think it looks ace, watched the original last week. Definitely don’t want to see modern day Val Kilmer with his top off though...)

Wow, some contrast…

At least she hasn't gone down the ridiculous plastic surgery route that so many Hollywood stars do. Desperately trying to hold on to their looks.

Top Gun: Maverick will either be awesome or awful. Possibly both.

Oh it will be both and that’s a good thing. I prefer Iron Eagle though because B movies are great and if you’re going to leave reality at the door you might as well go all in.

So a disaffected Iceman, angry at the injustice of becoming old and flabby while Maverick appears not to have aged at all, borrows a Tomcat and goes on a kill-crazy rampage. Our Mav and Gosling, after learning life lessons from one another, join forces to sort him out, then play a little volleyball. It’ll be AWESOME 😎

Allow me to reassure you, it’s going to be absolutely terrible.

Thanks for the input, when I want to read a film critique, I’ll go to someone who knows about movies.
Edit: when I read the thread title I thought it was about the AC130J gunships, which are called Ghostriders.

Looks well done but, it'll be in the Poundland dvd section b4 long

Tom cruise does look amazing for his age but Botox/surgery means the top half of his face seems immobile

I’m in a bit of a wind-up mood today, and hey I said I’d enjoy it ha ha.

Your considerations as to why it will be terrible going by the length of your response on page 1 probably took longer than the run time of the film.

As for who the baddies will be in this modern world, make the planes turn into psychtic robots or something, or make the baddie someone with laser beams for eyes who you could use as a metal spoon rack, or perhaps a Norse God. Chuck a Marvel badge at it, the same they do with other dross and it will do just fine.

Will it be good? Who cares, for better or worse I'm up for this movie.

Are they going to try and get Iceman back into a cockpit as well? As it's Val Kilmer it could be a tight fit...

It’s okay, I can touch type (badly) and I drink so much caffeine of a morning the words just pour directly from the dark corners of my mind via my finger tips and the internet into yours.

I’m a bit surprised so many people are getting their knickers in a twist about the legacy of a cheesy 80’s film.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod – it’s the flying stuff, that looks SO cool! 🙂

Steady on, how old are you, 12 or something? (if you are actually 12 you should be in bed, have you seen the time?)

It may turn out to be an entertaining yarn with some good flying sequences & CGI stuff but It'll be yet another 'Americaay kicks ass' story.
Can't believe the amount of people on here who slag the Yanks off for sticking their oar in all over the world but love the films about just that.

When I first saw it in the 80s around about as a teenager, yeah loved it. Then my mates sister watched it continually for some reason, so we realized it was shit, along with Ghost. The end. No nostalgia for it. 😂

Rocket League have been doing an 80s summer theme, with the title theme tune being "Playin' with the boys." Without googling, I thought the voice sounded familiar, Kenny Loggins somehow got two quite similar sounding tunes on the Top Gun soundtrack.

Thankfully, I can't recall the soft porn esque scenes from the movie when the above tune is played, would have been in my teens when it had its TV premiere and I think I've only watched part of it once since!

It’s 3 (of 4) blokes playing volleyball with their tops off. If you think that’s soft porn, you have lead a very sheltered life.

I’d go so far as to say it was SFW, but judge for yourself

I really hope it’s not terrible.

Oh I really hope it is!

To be clear the original is terrible, but that's what made it good.
As mentioned (at length) previously it had 80s politics and social commentary (but then it was an 80s film) and it was a very much a visually stylish film (still is) with a pretty thin plot... And the man child in me loves it for that.

Look at it this way, Michael Bay has spent the last twenty odd years unsuccessfully trying to make films that sit in the same niche and bare comparison to top gun...
Top Gun set the template for the sort of films Jerry Bruckheimer would produce for the next 30 years or so. And it set up a basic plot that would be replicated over and over (young gifted, but overconfident bloke, seeks to excel in given field, encounters setback/death of friend, has crisis of confidence, searches soul, makes a comeback just in time) it's a trope that Cruise has revisited several times and still works... The original has a legacy that's still going.

I do hope they've not made the new one too much of a worthy post millennium piece and that it is more of a slightly tongue in cheek direct sequel to the original, with the same tone and jingoistic/hyperbolic boys and their toys type fun the first one had...

That or all the bits they've shown in the trailer are actually intended to mislead you, and Maverick is actually now a steady 50-something bloke working as a surveyor, who upon discovering he's about to become a Grandad has been sent into a massive spiral, and all the fighter jets and motorbikes are just the most spectacular midlife crisis ever...

The Final Countdown was better. Jets, a carrier, hot shot pilot, enemy fighters being outclassed, a girl AND TIME TRAVEL!
Equally ludicrous.

Instead I'll link to this. Written by someone who obviously missed the point of the film (Hollywood in general actually).

As a Navy Captain, he would be really quite senior. On a carrier that would mean he would be either the main chap of the actual boat, or the head of the air wing. As a pilot (he must have been an Lt in the first film), getting to Captain in that length of time is slow, but not bad. He'd have had command, but I think would still have been able to fly.

That's probably a win for a pilot that wanted to keep flying.

One little detail in the trailer has come to light that’s ruffling a few feathers, concerning a patch on the back of Cruises’ jacket. In the original, it’s in four quarters, the top two a US flag, the UN flag, the bottom two a Japanese flag and a Taiwanese flag. In the trailer, there’s also a large quartered patch, with the US and UN flags at the top, but at the bottom there’s a white rectangle with a red upward pointing triangle, next to a red rectangle with some apparently random design on it.
It seems that one of the co-production companies has ‘encouraged’ the change, due to the Taiwanese flag being deemed to be unacceptable, and possibly the Japanese flag as well.
Why? The co-production company is called Tencent, and they’re Chinese...

I briefly read some of the twitter links related to this. A few self-proclaimed aviation experts explaining it by saying the patches relate to a more recent mission, etc. No. It's a work of fiction. The jacket is OBVIOUSLY meant to be the same one as in the original film, but it's been rebooted/revised/redacted whatever you want to call it to avoid causing offence. I'm not saying the Chinese demanded it, could easily have been an overzealous Hollywood suit preempting a situation.

There was an interesting article in the NYTimes about how Chinese investment has drastically changed how films are made now ( https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/18/world/asia/china-movies.html), including how a film like 7 Years in Tibet just couldn't be made these days (the director & Brad Pitt are forever banned from China due to their involvement!) as no major studio would have the bottle. About how there are no Chinese villains in movies any more (although you could argue that the propensity towards villainous Chinese pre-2000 was quite racist 😂). If you Google there are loads of similar articles... I found one from 2013 talking about how pro-Chinese scenes were specially filmed & added for the Chinese release of Iron Man 3.

Seems to be a potentially huge issue of censorship/revisionism that no-one really wants to talk about...

Agree but it's not new. When the USA finds films you get a USA bias [1], when China finds films you get a China bias.

Mind you, I prefer a democratic bias to a totalitarian bias.

You are right but until this particular issue was mentioned I'd never noticed or thought about it before!

You're right about bias too but it's not the same at all. Yes there are US-made films that are essentially just propaganda. But also there are always US made films coming out about US police/government corruption, criticising their own government, the White House getting blown up, etc. The same films about Chinese people or locations just wouldn't happen.

Ming the Merciless was intentionally so, I believe. He was "Yellow Peril" propaganda in the 1930s.

The nostalgia is ahead of the quality of the Tony Scott 'original'... But i don't mind that at all.

Anything to make me feel younger.

Top Gun is the poor relation to Officer & a Gentleman. Really surprised that hasn't been booted into existence. Sam Jackson? Too old?

Hmmm, I don't agree @rone. Officer and a Gentleman was a very different sort of film about a man overcoming his past (and a woman overcoming her status) to achieve something others thought unachievable. It was first and foremost a love story. Top Gun is an action film with a love interest. The only thing they have in common is they are both stories set within the Services.

Still, a reboot of OAAG would be interesting to see.

That's why it's a poor relation.

There are a couple of similar plot points and Top Gun has always been referenced against OAAG.

Though, for sure the characters and training story are different.

They're both love stories though.

Yep specifically designed for export sales, the idea was to produce a decent fighter / multi role aircraft and sell it to allies without compromising the really high end US only tech in the top end fighters.

But then US foreign policy changed and everyone just bought F-16s because they'd seen them in Iron Eagle!

I only wanted to engineer an opening for the 'holding on too tight' line.

I have just had a thought, though, imagine if all the dialogue in Top Gun had been read by Kenneth Williams and Frankie Howard.....

When I was a kid, all the books and aviation mags raved about the F16, particularly in a direct dogfight with the Fulcrum. Turns out the F15 and F18 were both better aircraft. But then people used to deride the Tornado, but it was a far, far better all round aircraft than anyone gave it credit for.

Citation needed...

The ground attack versions of the Tornado were, I will admit, very good at what it was originally designed to do, basically dropping bombs on things from low level. When they bolted on a big radar and made it an interceptor, it was a bit rubbish, especially as it would have been up against specialist air attack craft like the Flanker.

All aircraft generally have a niche where they excel. If you build a multi-role vehicle it will, in my opinion, always be compromised in some way. Case in point... Eurofighter2000. Build air superiority fighter based on 80's/90's specs, deliver it way past the 2000's that it was supposed to be awesome in and then, when it is deployed fully, spend a fortune modifying it to drop bombs. Then sell the later ones to Saudi.

Sorry, ranting a bit there. This is not a place to discuss procurement decisions.

F16 is a cracking plane, but it's not the interceptor that the F15 is or carrier capable like the F18. It's still bloody good as a fighter though and I would say better than both in a dogfight.
