[Closed] Need to stop cats, but don't want to impede hedgehogs. Best approach?

My home is a cat corridor. I'm surrounded by a rather substantial hedge perimeter and I want to stop them coming through, but I don't want to impede hedgehogs.

I saw one domestic cat in particular take out 2 birds over the last few days, and I can't be having that. They also like to shit everywhere, taking particular liking to my gravel driveway.

I was thinking a mesh, possibly wire but could be plastic, to place around the base of the hedge. I need the mesh to be small enough to stop the cats, but I don't know how small is too small for hedgehogs, or even if mesh is the best approach, I'm concerned the cats could climb it.

What's the STW advice on this?

What about using some short sections of plastic tube to create tunnels. That way the hedgehogs won't get stuck trying to get through the wire mesh.

I really like that idea, Simon, thanks! Suggestions on appropriate diameter welcome. I was thinking 100mm, but I really don't know how wide hedgehogs can get.

Cats can fit through surprisingly small gaps so I would think anything small enough for hedgehogs would be small enough for cats. The only thing that's worked for me is a water sprayer with motion sensor. Cats hate water, not sure about hedgehogs but they don't look like the short of creatures that would wuss out at the sight of a soaking.

That's my worry. I think corners would stop cats but not hedgehogs.

Funnily enough, I've got a half finished Raspberry Pi project designed for the purpose of spraying cats. But I started that before I moved here, and this place has far too many points of entry for a single sprayer.

Looks like ventilation conduit.
Is it me or is that hedgehog smiling?

Build extensive fortifications with cocktail sticks... the only potential problem is this may lead to frisky hedgehogs using your garden as a [s]dogging[/s] hogging spot.
