I'll chalk this one up to being over tired, as with every other stupid thing I do. I've just put the stovetop on, but didn't realise I hadn't put any water in the boiler 😒😐
I did realise once the kitchen started to fill with fumes instead of nice coffee aromas! I picked it up with an oven glove, the handle melted off, I chucked the whole thing in the garden. I'm pretty certain it's ****ed.
Anyway, I've just seen the bialetti brikka pot. Anyone used one of those? Is it worth getting one over the standard bialetti?
Bialetti obvs cos spares etc.
I prefer the stainless ones for easier to clean, and compatibility with induction hobs.
The Ikea stainless one is decent enough. It's a big debate as to whether the Brikka is worth it, some say yes, some no.
I have done that before, forgetting to put water in, then putting it on full power on the induction hob. I discovered that the hob has some sort of thermal protection, so cut out when it got too hot. The Moka pot has a few black marks, but still OK. The hob worked fine after cooling down.
Anyway, +1 for the stainless Bialetti. Easy to keep clean, and maybe less of the alu taste. Plus it works on induction, the alu version doesn't.
+1 for stainless bialetti, really like mine
The Brikka is better than the standard Moka Express. It produces slightly better coffee but is more consistent.
Get the 2 cup one, not the 4 cup. I've only used the 2 cup but I've read that the 4 cup doesn't produce as good coffee as the 2 cup.
Bialetti spares will also fit many copies, so you may be able to resurrect the one in the garden.
The one in the the garden is a bialetti Moka (one cup.) I'll go and check it out in a minute. The handle has melted off and I assume the Gasket is toast.
Had a quick look to see how much a direct replacement is but saw the brikka. I've never heard of that one before so kinda fancy trying it. Luckily I have a three cup Moka as well to keep me going!
Get a Bialetti and get one quick. Plus spares. Looks like the home coffee machine / pod machine boom is killing them.
I think there will always be stove-tops available.
The pods are environmentally unfriendly and will eventually get banned. It started with German state governments refusing to have them in govt buildings. The figures are a bit crazy, ~13g of aluminium waste for 7g of coffee.
love my Moka. its only a non branded steel one, charred and stained from excessive use. we upgraded to a fancy nespresso machine once but that just gathers dust - apart from the milk frother bit...
btw. i have recently taken to filling the bottom up with hot water from the kettle before i put it on the stove - this way the jug fills up with creamy hot nectar almost instantly rather than having to wait 10 / 15 minutes!! is this sacrilege??
I think there will always be stove-tops available.
True. But perhaps not Bialetti's!
Thinking about getting one of these.. couple of questions if anyone could help?
I presume I could make regular strength coffee (not espresso) if I bought a 6 cup version, then just used less coffee / more water?
Also are they a pain to set up / clean? Finally, how long roughly do they take to be ready (if I use mahalo's method of using already boiling water)
Thanks in advance
I’ve got the 6 cup Bialetti one, use it twice a day. I Know how much coffee to grind to make one long coffee out of it that isn’t too strong.
It takes 8-10 mins to make. Whilst waiting I make the rest of breakfast.
No problem cleaning either.
I did the same thing with my Bialetti stovetop. It actually looks pretty cool now with the blue/yellow colouring, but the heat did mess up the spring in the pressure relief valve. Sadly, Bialetti do not sell those as spares any more, so I will either have to find a way to fix it, or buy another.
My Bialetti Moka pot takes about 5 mins. Makes half a mug of very strong coffee which I then top up from kettle. Tried the hot water in the bottom once, the burn hurt so just use cold now. Cleaning takes 30s.
yeah mine tends to get left until the next time i use it - so i bang the old brewed granules into the bin and give the filter & jug a little swirl under the tap, thats about it.
just ordered a 2 cup Bialetti one. I will be using preground shop bought expresso coffee. If I make a 2 cup volume, does watering down with hot water from the kettle work to make a longer one ?
I prefer the stainless ones for easier to clean, and compatibility with induction hobs.
Yes, same here.
Brand doesn't matter much - they all work the same and take the same seals.
Bialetti Venus 4 cup is still only about £25
If I make a 2 cup volume, does watering down with hot water from the kettle work to make a longer one ?
Yep, you can do that. I tend to use a big slug of hot milk, the volume of coffee from my 3 cup pot and a splash of water to top it up. Or I'd use my one cup pot to make something like a macchiato.
As above with cleaning. Dump the used coffee and rinse under the tap, nothing more to it.
As for setting it up, yeah it's a bit more time consuming than making instant coffee or using a Tassimo or whatever. But it's a satisfyingly clunky piece of kit to use.
Think the one cup pot is a write off, the handle melted off and there's molten rubber all over the inside of the threads. The boiler unit smells of burning as well!
Might see if I can get a brikka as an Xmas present! 😜☕
