Heading to beside Yarm for a break.

So....which route from NE Scotland that will be efficient plus have a decent stop for food, etc?

Also any decent restaurants in or near Yarm?

Thanks.

Yarm is full of pubs and restaurants take you pick, all are pretty good.

The quickest route will be Edinburgh > A1 > A19 at Sunderland. That passes by quite a few decent places to stop on the way down. I used to always like stopping at St Abbs / Coldingham - stunning walks and good places to eat. Further down you've got Berwick, Holy Isle and all the Bamburgh etc. you can't go wrong.

If you want a slightly more scenic route take the A68 from Edinburgh down through the border to Newcastle. Again, loads of places on route. Kielder is a short detour off this route if you fancy checking it out for a cycle. Good stuff there for kids if that's important.

I eat out in Yarm quite a bit with work, not been anywhere bad. It's a very foody place - sort of like a local hub so has more than it should for a place that size. I'm sure you could stay for a month and not eat in the same place twice, trip advisor should set your straight.

A90 - A1 - A19 as tomd says. Have been doing it since I was a baby so it's obviously right. Just chill out and switch cruise control on the A1 single cariageway between Coldstream and Morpeth, it's not worth trying to hop traffic. remember your £1.70 for the Tyne Tunnel. Have stopped here for lunch a few times, barn at beal  you're over the halfway point on the way down once you get there.

I used to do that journey (Aberdeen-Guisborough) on a regular basis and generally went A68 or A697, as it's nicer scenery.  You do have to be awake over the blind summits on the southern bit of the A68 though 🙁

A68 is definitely the more scenic route. Doesn't take much longer either in my experience.
