Looking at doing a navigation course to learn how to use map & compass properly, mostly for walking, and wondered if anyone has any recommendations for good companies.

Google brings up a fair few providers, but there's no way to really tell them apart...

I know everyone on here is born knowing how to navigate, but does anyone know someone who has been on a decent course near Sheffield?

The FRA do them. I did one years ago in the Lakes before I did the OMM. Great fun and get to meet nice people. It is very running focused however and we even did a night navigation race in pairs (which me and my partner won :D)

Mountain navigation by Peter cliff or mountain craft and leadership by Langmuir, there are others. Self leaning is much more rewarding IMO,

There's a place in Eyam called Peak Navigation Courses:

And an outdoor adventure place in Buxton (just outside it as you start climbing Long Hill) which runs various courses although a lot of it is aimed at things like corporate team building.

Self leaning is much more rewarding IMO,

Disagree - you tend to end up doing things wrong and never really push yourself outside of your own comfort zone. Doing things wrong on familiar terrain is one thing, doing it wrong in the mist on Dartmoor won't end well... Especially as you won't know what your errors actually are.

I did a good one at the Edale YHA centre. Was about 20 years ago though! Peter Cliff book is good.
