Having been off work for over a week, I've not been having my usual 6 coffees a day and detoxing from caffeine somewhat ...

guess which knob head had a proper coffee at 11pm and is now having to try everything to help sleep (currently on whiskey)?

Well done me! What a dick.

Put down whatever gadget your using to tell the world your awake is a good start. You have to make your brain wind down, shining a light in your eyes read in bad typing isn't going to do that.

Read a book for a bit to wind down.

If it were me (or rather WHEN it's me) I give up and do something else til I'm tired again and distracted. Can't force yourself to sleep.

knock one out and then try again!
listen to the radio. Classic FM or radio 4 and I'm gone in minutes.

Haha, in the end a couple of glasses of whiskey helped do the trick - and watching the whole Eagles/Cowboys game !

Caffeine and coffee has never actually affected my ability to go to sleep. So sorry, can't help!

My tips (from an ex-shift worker).

Pitch black room (avoiding even LEDS on electronics, especially blue LEDS)
Wear socks
Hot milk with honey
Empty bladder
Hand shandy
Iplayer with half an hour radio prog that's not too interesting. Sketch comedy is usually good.
Coccoon yourself in a light mummy sleeping bag under a light duvet (the nylon helps you to slide easily when you roll over and you never wake up from losing the duvet)

Obviously not in that order but use common sense.
