...as certain people like to jump on the band wagon to protest for anything these days, I don't see anyone giving a rats arse about beheading children in Mozambique, where's the march ? It surely must be the UK governments fault in someway or the Israelis and America.

No nothing not a sniff of a protest in site...

Trolling no I'm not, just being honest that I'm fed up of these protests at the mo, certain groups jumping on the band wagon just for a good old fight, what an angry nation we've become in the last year.

Beheading children is an all new low...funny no ones going in to defend them.

If we marched about every atrocity in the world, we'd never sit down.

Because people only care when it's happening to someone that looks like them.

Saw that on the BBC website and felt psychically sick. As a species we are a piece of work.

So is the point of this thread to broadcast your view that all protests are somehow a bad thing?

where’s the march ?

The story is 3 hours old on the BBC website - how long had you been ruminating on this issue before you felt the need to speak out about it?

Its been happening for a long time, however the media have chosen not to publish it

So is the point of this thread to broadcast your view that all protests are somehow a bad thing?

I'm not saying that in anyway

"I’m not a member of the Woke group"

being "woke" or sympathetic to the plights of your fellow humans beings is not a bad thing.

Stop using it as an insult.

"adjectiveINFORMAL•US
adjective: woke; comparative adjective: woker; superlative adjective: wokest
alert to injustice in society, especially racism."

So we're defining woke as caring about issues?

Are you Schrodingers outrage? Simultaneously both outraged, but uncaring at the same time?

I'm definitely not uncaring...however I don't need to defend myself against fellow keyboard worriers.

Lets get this straight because I don't consider myself as part of the WOKE movement I'm considered racist ?

How strange that anyone could come to this conclusion, and that's the problem world over, don't agree with us you're automatically racist...

Schrodinger’s meme time:

It’s not going well for you is it?

Schrodinger's vindication invoked.

It's pretty distasteful using an issue like this to provoke an internet forum bust up using straw men and immediately turn it into all about 'woke' or 'right-on' or whatever.

OP - how are you going to take actual real-world steps to bring this to the attention of enough people to make a tangible change?

Are you supportive of increased intervention against Islamists by the Mozambique government in Cabo Delgado, even though there have been reports of extrajudicial killings and other human rights abuses conducted by them? Presumably you've seen the videos from last year which showed uniformed soldiers executing a woman?

You must be as concerned as I am about the risk of tit-for-tat abuses.

So we’re defining woke as caring about issues?

I use my Most Brexity Friend Forever to gauge these new Daily Mail/Farage/Express buzzwords.

He’s used ‘it’s these ****ing woke’s fault’ as an angry phrase twice now within my earshot. Once in reference to feminists and BLM , the other in reference to Covid deniers/antivaxxers. It became extra-confusing at that point.

He spits it out as derogatory label in the same way he also spits ‘****ing immigrants/(insert racist epithet), ****ing feminists, ****ing Corbyn, ****ing lefties, ****ing do-gooders’

So it could be a new catchall label to slap on ‘things/people I hate’ - or it could be more specific depending on the user?

* edit- it seems to have been twice- thrice reclaimed (currently by the ‘anti-woke’) from it’s original meaning.

(From Wikipedia, have not checked other sources)

Before ‘woke’ (vernacular, see further below) there was the ‘wide awake’ movement:

The term wide awake first appears in political culture and political ads during the 1860 presidential election in support of Abraham Lincoln. The Republican Party cultivated the movement primarily to oppose the spread of slavery as described in the Wide Awakes movement.

‘Woke’

It derives from the African-American Vernacular English expression stay woke. First used in the 1940s, woke has resurfaced in recent years as a concept that symbolizes perceived awareness of social issues and movement.

I thought woke was another word for decent? Seems strange to use it as an insult.

No, but using the word "woke" in this way indicates that you are a person whose opinion is utterly worthless and no further effort needs to be expended on it. Thanks for making that so clear early on.

Judging by this thread STW Forums, people are too busy bickering about things which could be easily over looked if they actually cared to.

Not if your two biggest hobbies are being perpetually angry about everything and worrying that your genitalia are of 'insufficient' size.

I think we need to compile a definitive list of all the things we're angry people aren't angry about because they're too busy being angry about things that we're not angry about.

I'll go first:
Cherries not exactly off-centre on cherry bakewells

who's next?

**** do-gooders’

Its an interesting way of defining a group as one you're not a member of isn't it 🙂

In relation to "I don’t see anyone giving a rats arse about beheading children in Mozambique,"

you read this story today because of the efforts made by Save the Children to bring it to your attention. A British charity supported by and acting on behalf of British donors - your friends and neighbours. Your awareness of the issue as of today is directly the result of people giving a rats arse.

Feels a bit like a weird version of the classic.

I'm always amused by peoples use of the phrase 'Charity begins at home'. Begins. They're describing 'being charitable' as something they haven't started yet.

I feel somehow inadequate, I don't feel angry about anything....

Should I be angry about that?

wtf is this thread? Either have a discussion about being woke or have a discussion about the atrocities being committed in Mozambique - combining them into one thread is a new low for this place

what an angry nation we’ve become in the last year.

This is true, but I'd consider spending some time away from the internet OP, for your own wellbeing.

And I mean that genuinely, not being snidey.

you're probably right !

never my intention to mix the two things up - I'm genuinely appalled and upset to read about what goes on around the world.

If I've caused offence or upset anyone I'm sorry...
